  • Older Friends ;-) & Footballers

My friend Billy, from college, called tonight and we talked on the phone for 2 1/2 hours.  Don’t you just love those friends who you only speak to a couple of times a year, but are able to have such great conversations with?  It’s so great to have that kind of friendship that allows you to just pick up where you left off.  Anyway, Billy called for some travel advice (I recommended Buenos Aires, Iguacu Falls and Rio for his next trip with his wife).  As it often does, our conversation drifted to our college days.  He told me that he had recently run into the ringboy from his wedding, a charming little boy (now grown) named Matthew Deufel, who apparently vividly remembered me playing with him at the wedding.  I had a hard time believing this little kid even knew my name let alone had memories of me from that long ago, but Billy insisted he did.  (What a nice honor!)  While we were talking, I pulled out some old photos I had taken of the wedding and scanned them.  Mind you, these are about 17 years old!

I have such great friends.  They’re scattered all over the world, but I really treasure the time I get to spend with them.  There’s my wonderful group of “New Year’s” friends that I’ve written about.  There’s Daniel who I wrote about yesterday and who visited this past weekend.  Two months ago, it was Marc who came to visit my home for the first time.  He’s another friend that I don’t talk with often enough, but when we do, it’s as if we never skipped a day.  Then there’s Diane, and Mike and Hugo…the list goes on.  There are also people who pop into your life after a long long time, like Melissa and allow you to reestablish old friendships.  That’s what’s great about the Internet.

Billy’s kids are really into soccer, and in honor of Beckham’s first game playing for the LA Galaxy, and the fact that we saw Victoria “Posh” Beckham in Beverly Hills last weekend, I thought I’d post these pictures of Billy’s kids with some famous soccer stars.  Can you name them (without mousing over the links)??

Bush thinks that destroying freedom is necessary to save freedom. In these circumstances, freedom doesn’t have a chance.
