  • Yahoo Photos

Update:  I just found 1000 more photos on two other Yahoo screen names.  Several of you have given me good options, but I still have a lot of unanswered questions, so if anyone has already made the migration, please let me know.  Thanks!

Does anyone use Yahoo Photos?  I’m in the unenviable position of having to make a decision about what to do with thousands of photos I have uploaded on Yahoo.  Recently I received the following email:

    YAHOO! PHOTOS

    Dear Yahoo! Photos user,

For some time now, we’ve supported two great photo sharing services: Yahoo! Photos and Flickr. But even good things come to an end, and we’ve decided to close Yahoo! Photos to focus all our efforts on Flickr the award-winning photo sharing community that TIME Magazine has called “completely addictive.”

We will officially close Yahoo! Photos on Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 9 p.m. PDT. Until then, we are offering you the opportunity to move to another photo sharing service (Flickr, KODAK Gallery, Shutterfly, Snapfish, or Photobucket), download your original-resolution photos back to your computer, or buy an archive CD from our featured partner (for users of the New Yahoo! Photos only). All you need to do is tell us what to do with your photos before we close, after which any photos remaining on Yahoo! Photos will be deleted and no longer accessible.

Of course, we hope you’ll join us at Flickr (you can even use your Yahoo! ID), but we also realize that Flickr may not be for everyone. In the end, we want you to find the service that’s right for you, and we hope you take some time to learn more about your options before making this important decision.

Please give us your decision by Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 9 p.m. PDT. After that time, any photos remaining in Yahoo! Photos will be deleted. Click here to make your decision, or review a list of our frequently asked questions.

Thanks for being a part of the Web’s largest photo sharing service we hope to see you over at Flickr!

Now the only reason I started using Yahoo photos in the first place, is that years ago, sites like Kodak Gallery and Snapfish didn’t let you have your own personal URL.  With Yahoo, I could just have people go to http://photos.yahoo.com and find my pictures.  It was easy.  Plus there were no passwords and you didn’t have to sign in, which made it even easier for my elderly relatives.  I’m leaning towards moving them all to Flickr, but if I do that, I’ll have to pay for a Premium account.  I don’t mind paying, but I’m wondering if it’s worth it?  What would you guys recommend?  I have accounts with all the services listed above, but use Kodak and Flickr the most.  I only get one shot at this…so I want to make the right decision.  I literally have thousands of pictures on Yahoo.  (3,709 to be exact):

    yahoo1 yahoo2 yahoo3 yahoo4 yahoo5

  • i’m not too fond of yahoo photo. it’s what i originally started using, but when i found out that i can’t redownload the pictures i uploaded in full size, it really pissed me off. there goes my college graduation pictures down the drain!

  • time to migrate to photobucket.com =)

  • Whoa… that’s a lot of albums. Sorry to hear about the yahoo thing closing down.

Yeah, I use photobucket as well.

  • WOW! 3000+ photos?! Like I didnt know you can transfer them to another site? Ahh Harry Potter was leaked like yesterday!! :(

  • Holy $h*t!  Are you serious??!?!?!

    CLOSING DOWN????

You have to tell me what you decide.  I have a pretty large number of albums myself (not as many as you) and will want to follow suit in your photo transferring footsteps.

  • I like flickr… but also check out Phanfare.com… it is a paid service but they are offering a special for yahoo users. They offer a great service but it is a bit expensive for some. Check it out.

  • that’s my best fd in the picture~!!

    yes~ i work at the disney now~

but that’s not really cool!! haha

  • I went to see Harry Potter this weekend it was good. 3000 photos wow. I have about that many on Xanga. Judi

  • i would opt for flickr–if you really do not mind paying.

but i am starting to be dubious of such sites (note: i am aware that flickr is owned by yahoo).
the reason is due to how it seems that users who, like you, have a huge account and/or are heavy users will be at the mercy of the website/company. if they wanted to, they could increase price rates and/or modify their plans and a majority of users would bend accordingly since they have a lot of their “precious moments” saved on their territory– i mean storage.

    best regards with this.

  • What do you do with that many pictures?

  • ooo i hate it when photo sites close.

years ago i used “heremy” i didnt even see any emails saying they were closing. and all of my pictures i stored basicly from anywhere before junior year highschool got deleted.

lol and i thought i had a lot. over 3000? u must of had a lot of fun outings or have a happy trigger… prob both haha

  • wow, that is a lot of pictures to transfer!  I have some videos that is too big to email to my sister in HK, and want to store somewhere on the internet so she can view.  Do you have suggestions?

    ryc:  thanks for your comments.

  • I would post on Flickr too…

ryc: The service fee for a fung shui master ranges from a few hundred dollars to thousands, depending on the size of the property. I know a little bit of fung shui too….if you need some opinion. *wink*

  • I thought you could download all the photos on your computer (I’d aware its alot.)and took your times to find the right site.

Anyway, maybe you can try : http://www.free-webhosts.com/free-image-hosting.php or http://www.theimageplace.net/

    : )

  • Thats a lot of photos buddy. Yeah I think I m going to buy the CD and figure out wha tI want to do with my photos later after that. I dont know enough bout all the diff photo sites, except that they all require passwords and logins. Bah.
