  • Beautiful Bine’s Birthday

I will be taking a couple of days off blogging, but this is surely the most important entry of the week.  All of my friends, and regular readers of this space know about my friend Sabine, Bine for short.  You know what a tough time she had this spring at Virginia Tech.  You know that her inimitable style and always positive attitude have gotten her, and indeed our entire group of friends, through the best and the worst of times.  She is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise polluted world.  She approaches everything she does with passion and fervor, and is the glue that bonds us all together.  Marcelo put it better than I could in an email to her this morning:

Querida amiga!  Happy birthday to you!!!  And thank God and Carey, if they are not the same dude, for the Yahoo reminders :)  I hope you are well, healthier, with most of your toenails in place, and getting closer to finishing your data collection with the poo tanks!  May you keep on blessing all of us with your sweetness, solid character, most excellent sense of humor, and, of course, good stories!  Beijos carinhosos, marcelo

    marriagecert

What you may not know however, is that she is my wife!  Yes, it’s true.  We were married in a small civil ceremony in Italy on August 19, 2000.  The ceremony was officiated by the great great grandniece of the Red Baron.  Her name was Baroness Andrea Von Richthofen.  Mick was the maid of honor, Miggl the best man and Eva the flower girl.  Now, some background:

I met Sabine at the aforementioned Marcelo’s house in Piracicaba Brazil in 1997.  That Christmas many people had converged at the “Casa Diversi”; both friends of Marcelo and friends of his sister Adriana.  Many of us did not know each other, but we all soon became great friends, and began our tradition of traveling together for every New Year’s.  I was “homeless” at the time, traveling the world with my job, all expenses paid.  One day, we were all sitting by the pool in the backyard eating mangoes as they fell off the trees, and I was telling this assembled group of new friends my life story.  At the end, Sabine said, “Honey, I should marry you.  What a great life!”  To which I responded, “Honey, the only way I would ever marry you, is if we were in Florence Italy, at San Miniato at sunset, overlooking the Ponte Vecchio!”  We all laughed.

Wouldn’t you know it, that three years later, we all found ourselves in Florence, Italy at San Miniato at sunset, overlooking the Ponte Vecchio.  Our friends had bought some truly rinky dink rings on that same famous bridge earlier that day, and as the sun sank into the horizon, we said our vows.

LOL, so there you have it.  The story of my phony wedding in Italy.  This year Sabine, the two timing tramp, got engaged to Alan.  In all honesty though, I can’t say that I’ve been entirely faithful in this marriage.   So here’s to you Bine, on your birthday.  I wish I could be there with you to celebrate.  I know that you will have a wonderful day.  You always do. GLY!!!

And now for the obligatory embarrassing pictures I’ve taken of you over these past 10 wonderful years darling! (And some not so embarrassing this time…just to show how wonderful you are!)

  • Cornbread and Pineapple Pie??

Recently I received a call from someone I met only once briefly 8 months ago but have spoken to via phone or text message dozens of times since then.  (To protect this person’s anonymity, I’ll call them “Pat” ),   Yet every time we tried  to meet again, Pat flaked on me.  VERY L.A.  So yesterday Pat calls with a friend to say they are “in the neighborhood” and have a present for me. ?? I go outside to find that Pat had brought me homemade cornbread and a slice of pineapple pie.  How random is that?  Am I missing something??  It was good to see Pat though, I must admit, and the cornbread and pie were quite tasty.

Then today I was at Koo Koo Roo for lunch.  At the table behind me sat a man in his mid 50′s I’d say, wearing overalls, with a ponytail and headphones that were attached to a portable DVD player watching Star Trek.  In the opposite corner of the same restaurant sat Linda Hunt, Academy Award Winner for Best Supporting Actress in 1982 for “The Year of Living Dangerously” with Mel Gibson (I hope she’s not Jewish).  Outside the restaurant a cute dog was sniffing everyone for food.  I put some of my chicken in a cup and asked the person at the table near the dog if it was his and if I could give him some chicken.  He looked up at me as if I had interrupted a proposal to his boyfriend and sneered “If it doesn’t have bones!”  He might as well have followed it with an Endora snap!  (OK, I’m dating myself.)

Sometimes it’s so bizarre living in La La land.

  • Independence & Doggie Ear Plugs

    fireworks

The Fourth of July (Independence Day for you non-Americans) has always been my least favorite holiday of the year.  It’s not because I hate the independence and freedom this country was founded on, and it’s not because George W. Bush is single handedly trying to dismantle many of those freedoms.  The reasons behind my loathing of this holiday are more complex.  They date back to grade school and many memories I’d rather not recount.  They hark back to college, when, after my dog Oreo was shot at point blank range with a .38 caliber revolver (and survived); he was deathly afraid of fireworks.  (The story of how Oreo got shot by a horribly inhumane campus security guard is another long entry for another day).  Oreo was so scared of fireworks in fact, that he used to hide in the closet of my bedroom shaking like a leaf whenever there were any fireworks.  Even firecrackers made him run and hide, which, given the circumstances was quite understandable.  Every 4th of July from the time of the shooting until the year he died, I would sit in the closet with him, while playing the loudest music I could find, and hold him while he drooled and shook.  So, needless to say, the 4th brings back some pretty painful memories.  I am an adult though, and I’m not one to dwell on the past.  Suffice it to say, it’s just a day that makes me remember certain things.

It’s not like I’ve never had good 4th’s of July.  Last year was one of the best.  I was in Germany for the World Cup, and there was something cathartic about spending America’s Independence Day in Europe, especially in Germany.  I was with some of my best friends in the world and we had a wonderful time.  To honor that special memory, I’m posting my pictures from that trip.  There are over 800 photos, so don’t feel obligated to look, but I wanted to preserve them here for posterity, and since I wasn’t blogging last year, I thought it appropriate on this Independence Day.  Happy Birthday America, and Oreo, plug your ears!

What a trip! Germany hosted the world and the world was amazed by what it saw here. Today we were invited to breakfast in Stuttgart. We then drove back to Munich with a couple of Mick’s friends who were on their way to catch a flight to Georgia (in Russia, not the US :) We then met Eva and her two beautiful children Ana and Tim. I hadn’t seen her in five years and we had a nice visit. A final farewell BBQ with new friends lasted into the night and I got a final chance to have fun with the kids. This is the last time I’ll be posting pictures from this trip, as I leave in the morning at 7:15. Thanks to all of my German friends who were such wonderful hosts. A special thanks to Beate & Matthias for their hospitality and friendship. See you all in South Africa in 2010!

World Cup Day 10 – The Final Day

    (1 album)

We woke up early (again :) and traveled 230 kilometers to Stuttgart, the city with the second highest number of foreigners in Europe. Mick and Miggl used to live here, so we met all of their friends in a large park for another big BBQ. The World Cup final started at 8 PM, so we headed to a beer garden in the city center and watched the game. Italy managed to pull it off in the penalty round and they are now the world champions! There are a LOT of Italians in Stuttgart and the city went WILD as these photos will attest. The game was not without controversy though. A MUCH beloved player on the French team, Zidane, was eliminated from the game for head butting an opponent. He is loved and respected all over the world and this unsportsmanlike act was quite out of character shocking everyone. Despite that, France played an amazing game (I’m told :) and we celebrated! Viva Italia!!

    World Cup Day 9

The day started at 6:45 AM (after going to bed at 3:45 :) when we took David and Hyun Ju to the airport. We then took an hour long hike to a nice beer garden for lunch and hiked back home to prepare for the party and the 3rd place match between Germany & Portugal. My hosts wanted me to photograph everyone at the party, but as usual, the ratio of kid photos to adult photos is about 2:1 The party was amazing…great food and lots of new friends. To make the day even better, Germany won, to the delight of the host country crowd. This country has done an amazing job hosting this World Cup, and I know many of you will be visiting in the future because of it. Until tomorrow….Cheers! P.S. World Cup Day 8

After breakfast this morning Mick drove Youenn and I to Sabine’s family’s house in Altenbuch. There we had a delicious Bavarian lunch with Sabine’s Mom, Dad, Aunty (Tante) Gertrude and Grandma (Omi :) After admiring their beautiful garden and hearing delightful stories from the “old days”, we received wonderful gifts of hand knitted socks and said our goodbyes, promising to return again. We then drove to Mick’s house and visited her parents whom I haven’t seen in five years. Since I was last here, they closed their family bakery. Some of you may remember my pictures from 2000 and 2001 when I pulled fresh baked brezen (pretzels) from the bakery’s oven. Mick’s parents haven’t changed a bit, and their home was as welcoming as ever. After a quick dip in the pool, we headed back to Munich for a late dinner, then rode the subway home. We’re having a big party tomorrow…so must get some rest!

    World Cup Day 7

    (1 album)

Today we took a calming (at times :) rubber raft tour down the Alz River in Upper Bavaria near the Alps. The scenery was majestic and the weather was perfect…until the very end of the 5 mile trip when the clouds started rolling in and we knew a big storm was imminent. The rain and lightning didn’t start until we were driving home on the autobahn in Mick’s leaky Volkswagen. I didn’t take as many photos today, as I was trying to protect my camera from fellow rafters trying to tip us and errant trees that seemed out to get us! A pasta dinner at home was followed by lively discussion into the wee hours. Tomorrow we head to lower Bavaria to visit Sabine & Mick’s relatives and enjoy some more German hospitality.

    World Cup Day 6

Today we went to one of crazy King Ludwig’s castles and enjoyed a relaxing stroll through a Bavarian Forest. A delicious Mexican themed dinner back at the house was followed by watching the France/Portugal match. Some of us went to the huge “Fan Fest” at the Munich Olympic Stadium which wasn’t quite as crowded as last night when Germany played, but still had tens of thousands of colorful fans cheering for both teams. Our friend Youenn was happy for his home country when France won. Now it’s down to France and Italy (and I’m sure you all can guess who I’m hoping for Tomorrow we wake up early to go river rafting so Gute Nacht from Germany for now. –Carey
    Cheers!

    World Cup Day 5

    (1 album)

Today was a BIG day for soccer in Germany. Unfortunately they lost to the Italians, but as these photos will attest the fans love their team. We watched most of the game in a large beer garden. I’ve also included some photos from the Fan Fest at the Olympic Stadium at the end. We began the day strangely enough at another beer garden, where Germans young and old enjoyed breakfast and beer. We then went on another bike ride and Matthias and I went swimming in the aptly named Ice Channel of the Isar River….with a STRONG current and bone numbing temperatures. It was really refreshing. David and Hyun Ju arrived this afternoon from Hamburg, and Mick came from Stuttgart making friends wherever she went. Despite the crushing loss, it was a great day, and a great final for Germany. Tomorrow Youenn will be cheering for France, while many of our Brazilian friends will be cheering for Portugal.

    World Cup Day 4

Today was a wonderful lazy day. Since there’s not a soccer game until tomorrow, we went to Lake Starnberger and swam and barbequed to a gorgeous sunset. More friends are arriving tomorrow, as we prepare for the BIG game…Germany vs. Italy. Since we have all nationalities represented here, it should be an interesting night I hope those of you in the States have a happy 4th! –Carey

Well, no soccer games today, but we still had a great time. Biked 17 miles through the Munich City Center and my friends were sure to point out every beer garden The weather couldn’t be more perfect. More of our friends arrived today. Hope most of you in the US are off tomorrow and that you had a great weekend. –Carey

    Hi Everyone,
Here are the photos from my first few hours in Germany. I’ll try to post new photos each day, and you will get an automatic update. You don’t need to log in to view these (unless you want to save them or order them). I had a great flight over, and when I landed, England had just lost to Portugal, and the Brazil/France game was starting. To most everyone’s shock, Brazil lost. Germany is looking stronger all the time, and the fans here are WILD. Have a great weekend. I’ll send more tomorrow. It’s 3:15 AM here now, and I haven’t slept in what seems like days. Good night

  • The Naked Ape

    nakedape

OK, I’m sometimes accused of being prejudiced toward “stupid” people, but this is unbelievable.

    Are ugly children less loved?

Report: Parents more attentive to attractive kids

Most parents would deny it, but Canadian researchers have found that physical attractiveness affects how children are treated, according to a report Tuesday in The New York Times.  Read more…

If it’s true (gasp), it speaks to what what Desmond Morris theorizes in “The Naked Ape.  We’re all “naked apes” (check out the book, and excerpt below).  Survival of the fittest.  You just need to define “fit” in every generation.  Truly shocking “research”, if that’s what it is.  But as a friend of mine who’s a professor at UCSB pointed out, “If the article really represents the study they did, then there’s a  potentially big flaw in it. In the statistics, they should at least account for (or correct for) the attractiveness of the parents.  That’s clearly correlated to the attractiveness of the children. The attractiveness of the parent may effect their behavior (e.g. they could have married into richer spouses historically, thus come from more moneyed families which may tend to care more for children in  public spaces out of a variety of fears).  The trouble with these statistical studies is that they only show correlations, not cause and effect relations.  In humans there’s even an expression: “my mother drowned the stupid ones”. have you heard that?  Yes, animals don’t appear to treat all their children equally similarly for humans. however, attractiveness may not be the important factor there. my guess is that it would be next to impossible to device a statistical study to test this.  It would be extremely difficult to isolate (or correct for) all the other possible factors that people could think of (not to mention the ones we can’t think of yet).”

From amazon’s review of The Naked Ape, a book I read 15 years ago that still resonates in so many of my life experiences:

“A startling view of man, stripped of the facade we try so hard to hide behind.”  In view of man’s awesome creativity and resourcefulness, we may be inclined to regard him as descended from the angels, yet, in his brilliant study, Desmond Morris reminds us that man is relative to the apes–is in fact, the greatest primate of all.  With knowledge gleaned from primate ethnology, zoologist Morris examines sex, child-rearing, exploratory habits, fighting, feeding, and much more to establish our surprising bonds to the animal kingdom and add substance to the discussion that has provoked controversy and debate the world over. Natural History Magazine praised The Naked Ape as “stimulating . . . thought-provoking . . . [Morris] has introduced some novel and challenging ideas and speculations.” “He minces no words,” said Harper’s.  ”He lets off nothing in our basic relation to the animal kingdom to which we belong. . . He is always specific, startling, but logical.”
  • A Long Overdue Apology

I received a life changing message today.  Something I’ve been waiting 15 years for.  Thank goodness for MySpace:

…”On a serious note……….I can’t remember if I ever really said it……but I am truly, truly sorry for everything that happened…you did so much for me and how did I repay you…well…I truly truly apologize…”

That meant the world to me.

  • The Evolution of Children & Surfing in Brazil!

Some dear Brazilian friends of mine have a son and daughter who I haven’t seen since 2001.  This is a picture I took of their son at Lake Michigan in Chicago on Labor Day weekend 2001, the Saturday before 9/11:

It’s always been one of my favorite pictures.  He’s such a doll.  It’s amazing how much they grow up in 6 years though.  My friends just returned from Ubatuba Brazil (where you might remember our gang spent New Year’s a couple of years ago), and this is what that cute “little” boy looks like now.  Gosh I feel old!  I LOVE these photos though!

  • Garage Gets Owned, Paris is Burning & Lonely Goat Herds at The Hollywood Bowl

We just got back from the Hollywood Bowl.  It was a great night…except for one thing.  My beautiful new camera is gone.  I don’t even feel like talking about it now…it will just make me sad.  Luckily Seth brought his camera, so I was at least able to take a few photos with that.  Here are a few of my favorites.  To see the rest, skip down below.  Good night!

This morning I’m having breakfast on my patio and I hear this loud horrible boom.  I look across the street and this is what I saw.  I ran and got my camera.  I wish I’d gotten the video of this dumb wench getting out of her car and looking up at the garage wondering what happened.  It was if she had no concept of what she’d just done.  She was tilting her head, like a dog tilts his head when you ask if he wants to go for a walk.  LOL.  After getting unstuck, she drove away…but I had my camera set on high resolution, so I have her license plate clear as day.  Damn women drivers!!

The building was FUGLY anyway.  Maybe they’ll repaint it.  It’s filled with vapid commercial actresses who are always letting their dogs shit in my yard and not picking it up.  I wish she have done more structural damage!

So, Mika Brzezinski, on MSNBC, had a histrionic, possibly staged freakout during which she refused to lead with the Paris Hilton story, called her producer out (by name) for scheduling it atop her newscast, and even tried to burn the paper with the Hilton copy. Staged or not, does she have a point?  Read and see more…

Tonight we went to the famed Hollywood Bowl to see the “Singalong Sound of Music“.  The show was sold out and there were 18,000 people there.   The “pre show parade” started at 6:00 and featured hundreds of people dressed as characters, songs or things from the movie!  I was thinking of putting a nun habit on my head (with a soccer ball of course…see below) and having a pack of cigarettes rolled up in my shirt sleeve, and saying I was “A problem like Maria”.    The kid who ended up winning the costume contest was dressed as “How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand”.  The costume was brilliant, and he won a trip to the Mexican Riviera!

If you haven’t ever been to the “sing-along” version of the Sound of Music; they basically play the movie, and all the songs are subtitled.  Everyone sings, and sometimes acts out.  You’re given a “goodie bag” with sprigs of edelweiss and other assorted Sound of Music memorabilia.

The Hollywood Bowl is such a magical place to be in the summer.  It’s nestled within the Hollywood Hills, just outside a major freeway, but when you’re there it’s like you’re in the middle of nowhere.  It’s so quiet and the acoustics are excellent.  It’s one of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world.  It’s been around since 1922 and has hosted everyone from The Beatles and Rolling Stones to Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland.  I wonder what my pictures would have looked like in 1922??

Here are the rest of the pictures in living color.

    Song of the day
