    crash

    It’s the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We’re always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something.

    I had to work in Irvine today and afterwards I met Lisa at Costco because I was going to buy a temporary camera until mine gets fixed next week (pathetic huh?  I feel naked without it though.  Plus, I may want a small pocket camera for times I don’t want to carry the G9.  So I settled on a cheap SD1000.  If I don’t like it, Costco has a 90 day return policy.)

    After that, we headed to Pick Up Stix to get dinner and head to her place to feed the kids.  As I was driving north on Technology Dr. a woman in a white Volkswagen (with Hawaii plates) who was heading in the opposite direction, suddenly decided to turn left, but didn’t see me coming.

    I remember thinking to myself, there’s no way she could possibly turn, but as she did, I slammed on my brakes and braced myself for impact (not a smart thing to do apparently, and I’m paying for it now).  I’ve never been in a car where the air bags deployed.  It’s like a small explosion in the car.  There’s smoke and the smell of gunpowder.  After the crash, I was disoriented.  I smelled smoke though and knew I had to get out.

    Luckily, the other woman was unhurt.  I was banged up, but alive and not much worse for wear.  When the police came, the first thing the other driver said to the cop was, “It was all my fault, I’m so sorry”.  Lisa and I looked at each other and both thought the same thing.  Long story short, my car was towed away, and my wonderful cousins took very good care of me tonight.  I’ll rent a car tomorrow and go home.  Weekend plans might be shot though.  It’s 2 AM and I best get some rest.  My neck and my knee is really hurting.

    I have my bell and my cousins are at my beck and call.  LOL.  Ice packs are for the swelling!

  • Sorry to hear about the crash!  I’m glad you’re ok and that there were air bags, though I do realize they probably caused you more damage than you would have felt otherwise in this case.  I had the same thing happen with Garbo in the front seat (luckily he was actually belted in that time) – we were going about 30-40 mph - how fast were you going?  I think my head would have hit the steering wheel without the airbags, but the pain and disorientation of the airbag going off in my face was no fun.  Hopefully your car isn’t considered totalled because then insurance will cover the actual cost of the repair.  Ours was totalled, which meant they gave us about half of what we really deserved!  I’ve also had a left-turner hit me on my bicycle.  It’s an inherently dangerous turn.  I say all right turns all the time ;)  I hope you wake up feeling better than you did when you went to sleep.

  • Thanks Seth.  Hopefully I’ll feel fine Saturday morning and I can hear your song!  I was going 45.

  • Whoa, glad you made it out ok.  Wrecks are never really fun, but it’s good that she just got out and admitted fault even if it’s not the “smartest” thing to do.

    Anyway, hope you aren’t feeling too sore from the collision.

  • Good shot o whiskey fix ya right up. Cheers

  • lucky for us, we need only to avoid deer and farm implements so i’ve never had the opportunity to test my air bags yet!  glad you’re ok.  looks to me like you’re taking advantage of the situation though!  looks like around $5000 damage.  good luck on getting it all fixed up and back on the road in a timely fashion.  peace, Al

  • I’m glad to see the patented Carey pout is still intact. I bet the lady was freaking out about you taking photos, thinking that you were preparing for a law suit.

    Little does she know, it’s for entertainment purposes only – for now! dun!dun!dun!

  • Whoa – it’s a good thing no one was seriously injured.  I understand driving instructors tell students now to put their hands on 9 and 3 to avoid injuries to their hands when the airbag discharges.

    The last picture – lol.

  • OMG! I am so glad that you are fine! Take care!!!

    And I love that dialogue from CRASH… its such a powerful statement.

  • Wow, Have you went to the doctor for some checks yet? Hope you will get better soon. =]

    What is that same thing you and Lisa were thinking about?

  • good to see you’re okay. she turned left so it wasn’t your fault besides she admitted it. people rarely accept responsibility. my car looks better than yours now. oh yea.. that movie Crash sucked.

  • Ouch!  You are taking the crash better than I would!  Glad you are ok!  Hope you get better soon!

  • woah thats scary! glad you’re alright!

    i have a question…they say when you’re about to crash everything slows down. You notice things you wouldn’t normally notice. Little details.

    I was watching a Michio Kaku documentary last night, and thats where the question came from.

  • o wow scary! im glad you have no hardcore serious injuries and youre ok

    im really in awe that the lady took full responsibility. most people would just start shouting and go all out, even if it was their fault. nice to see that theres still some nice drivers out there.

    speaking of nice drivers. is it me or is the “thank you wave” a dying art? LOL sometimes im grinding my teething thinking “say think you…. say thank you… wheres my wave….” ::GRRR: haha

  • Sorry to hear about your accident. I’m glad you’re still with us and everyone is relatively okay. I’m also glad the woman was willing to fess up to it being her fault. Hope you’re all better soon.

    Patrice

  • wow, good thing you’re ok. take care!

  • @jonny515 - Thanks Johnny…hope you’re enjoying being back home.

    @qccan - You’re probably right…but I don’t drink

    @pukemeister - I’ll be surprised if it’s only $5000, but you may be right.

    @MaximMan - LOL, yeah, I even had the insurance adjuster go to the blog for my “statement”.  LOL

    @ElusiveWords - My hands are rarely 9 and 3 or 10 and 2, but surprisingly they were yesterday.

    @Dezinerdreams - Thanks Dez, I appreciate that.  I liked Crash too.

    @ch_iu -
    Thanks Lewis.  What Lisa and were thinking was that what the woman said
    was the LAST thing you ever want to say to a cop, whether it’s true or
    not.  I’m glad she did though.  And I’ll probably go to the doctor
    tomorrow.

    @NDM -
    Andy, your car probably looked better than mine before.  I never take
    very good care of my cars (as far as cleanliness).  Why didn’t you like
    the movie??

    @stevew918 - At least no one was seriously injured!  Thanks Steve.

    @shake_things_up -
    I wouldn’t really say things slowed down.  I remember thinking there
    was no way she could possibly turn as she was doing it.  I didn’t even
    have time to honk my horn.  It happened so fast.

    @Sc12EeN17aM3 -
    Guilty as charged, sometimes I don’t do it.  I’m going to turn over a
    new leaf and always do the thank you wave.  I’ll start with you.
    Thanks Jad!  Wave.

    @plyle - Thanks Patrice.  Happy Easter.

    @e2718281828 - Thanks Macky.  I hope you have a really good birthday.  It’s a big one!!

  • “I remember thinking to myself, there’s no way she could possibly turn”

    whoah. that’s lucky,you almost died like James Dean(at least according to the James Franco movie.)

  • Poor Carey and Poor CAR!  Glad you seem ok, as the sense of humor and wit are certainly fine under the mask of the blog!  Take it easy, what a hassle!  Be careful!  Pam

  • oh my goodness….anyway i guess everything should be already alright… at least you are still in one piece =) lucky

  • @tadamori - It was more like Montgomery Clift without the booze

    @pamfitz99 - Thanks Pam.  You should come visit the HC while I’m recuperating!

    @lcfu - Thanks   I am still in one, rather sore piece

  • Happy Easter to you. Judi

  • wow.. glad you are OK…and coping well..

  • @garlicky - I’m doing much better.  Thanks for your concern!  –Carey

  • I’m so glad you and everyone else were able to walk away. Car accidents are so scary…all those crunching noises. You’re gonna be a sore puppy for a while. My husband and a friend were in a head on last year, they were doing 25, the other guy was doing over 40. Hubby was the passenger. He said the airbag felt like he got hit in the chest with a sledgehammer and the chemical burns took a couple days to go away. I know this happened to you a couple days ago, so I’m hoping you’re feeling a bit better now!

  • @Vana_Roth - I’m feeling much better.  I’m still sore, but I’m very lucky.  Thanks!

  • OMG! So much had happened as I was catching up!
    Take care and I hope by now your bruises are all gone….no wonder you needed acupuncture?

  • @curry69curry - You’re sweet Garry.  Thanks!  I’m feeling better   Welcome back.
