  • Happy Days Are Here Again

    HOPE vs. FEAR

The history of America is studded with great breakthroughs followed by decades of consolidation and occasional regression. Tonight’s victory proclaims the end of the dark years of the Bush regression. It’s time for another American breakthrough. Click here to read more.

    So long sad times
    Go long bad times
We are rid of you at last

    Howdy gay times
    Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past

    Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let’s sing a song of cheer again
    Happy days are here again

Happy Days Are Here Again” is a song copyrighted in 1929 by Milton Ager (music) and Jack Yellen (lyrics). The song was recorded by Leo Reisman and His Orchestra, with Lou Levin, vocal (November 1929), and was used in the 1930 film Chasing Rainbows. Today, the song is probably best remembered as the campaign song for Franklin Delano Roosevelt‘s (FDR) successful 1932 Presidential campaign. Since FDR’s use of the song, it has come to be recognized as the unofficial theme of the Democratic Party. The lyrics suggest optimism and buoyancy.

Even though I supported Hillary Clinton in the primary, I was proud today to cast my vote for President Elect Obama.  The line wasn’t bad at all:

But my vote almost didn’t get counted!

Election Worker:  You can’t take photographs in here.
Me:  Sure I can.  I just press this button.  Snap….blinding flash.
    Election Worker:  You CAN’T
Me:  I did last time I voted:  (http://weblog.xanga.com/CareyGLY/641073173/making-history-herstory.html)
Election Worker:  It’s a federal offense.  Here’s your ballot.  You can take that booth (pointing).

Election Worker:  I told you that you couldn’t take pictures!
Me:  Gayle King said I could.  (http://www.oprah.com/slideshow/oprahshow/20081031_tows_fridays)
    Election Worker:  Who’s Gayle King?
    Me:  Who’s Gayle King??
Election Worker:  Yes, who’s Gayle King??
Me:  She’s Oprah’s best friend!!  She told Oprah to take a camera to her polling place and take a picture of her ballot.
Election Worker:  I don’t care, it’s against the law.
    Me:  So arrest me.
    Election Worker:  I will.
Me:  See ya!  (Walking away a la Tina Fey past Sarah Palin on SNL…snapping this photo behind me as he follows me.)

Oh well, at least I stuck my ballot in the box!

Here’s hoping that vapid, idiotic, reprehensible, repulsive, moronic waste of a woman, Sarah Palin, is never again on a national stage.

The LA Times said it best when they endorsed Obama:

Indeed, the presidential campaign has rendered McCain nearly unrecognizable. His selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate was, as a short-term political tactic, brilliant. It was also irresponsible, as Palin is the most unqualified vice presidential nominee of a major party in living memory. The decision calls into question just what kind of thinking — if that’s the appropriate word — would drive the White House in a McCain presidency. Fortunately, the public has shown more discernment, and the early enthusiasm for Palin has given way to national ridicule of her candidacy and McCain’s judgment.

And if you recall, I said it seconds after he introduced the crazy gun toting whack job on August 29th:

President Obama & The Beauty Queen

I wish I was home, in Chicago right now.  Doesn’t it look great?  For more, check out my blog entry from my trip home last summer:

    Speaking of the Spruce Moose:

From Newsweek‘s Special Election Project comes the real Sarah Palin. She met staff members in a towel:

At the GOP convention in St. Paul, Palin was completely unfazed by the boys’ club fraternity she had just joined. One night, Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter went to her hotel room to brief her. After a minute, Palin sailed into the room wearing nothing but a towel, with another on her wet hair. She told them to chat with her laconic husband, Todd. “I’ll be just a minute,” she said.

She raised William Ayers before the campaign signed off on it:

Palin launched her attack on Obama’s association with William Ayers, the former Weather Underground bomber, before the campaign had finalized a plan to raise the issue. McCain’s advisers were working on a strategy that they hoped to unveil the following week, but McCain had not signed off on it, and top adviser Mark Salter was resisting.

And she spent far more on clothes than was reported:

NEWSWEEK has also learned that Palin’s shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain’s top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family–clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent “tens of thousands” more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as “Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast,” and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

Finally, Steve Schmidt (who reportedly picked Palin as VP) would not let her speak on election night.

McCain himself rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign, and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended. Palin asked to speak along with McCain at his Arizona concession speech Tuesday night, but campaign strategist Steve Schmidt vetoed the request.

And now FOX News of all outlets has this incredibly damning report on Caribou Barbie!!  (Update 11/13/08 – Apparently some of this stuff about the Spruce Moose was made up as a hoax. (To be clear, none of this means the Africa story is false.)  See what happens when you trust Fox News (where I first heard this story)??  She’s still a dangerous MORON, and I’m getting tired of her sexed up cutesy act on TV.  Save it for your white trash boyfriend Sarah, maybe you can double date with Cindy McCain.)  Gosh, it feels good to vent.  LOL

    Palin?

  • @Diiiwin - You said it!

@lv2skrp - Thanks Michele.  That’s sweet of you to say.
@Lisa - Actually, no!  I went back and edited it to it’s current form, and
toned it down quite a bit.  I hate that woman more than anyone in
recent memory.  I think she’s evil and hideous and a terrible human
being.  I can barely look at her anymore, she literally makes me want
to vomit she’s so fucking stupid.  So no, I don’t think I was too harsh

Bad time to be studying ‘overseas’.

  • well, this gun toting whacko voted for Obama and i hope that 4 years from now i can sit here and enthusiastically support his reelection rather than feeling the way i did about GW 4 years ago.  let’s not forget that the only way FDR restored the american economy was by getting us into a war – justified or not!
Just watch out that Arnold doesn’t send the terminator to snatch your camera!  peace, Al

    Go Obama! :D

  • To Happy Days!

  • ha! That’s funny that you can get arrested for taking pics and you still did it anyway. You have balls. haha!

Yeah, it must have been crazy fun in Chicago.

  • It was so exciting to watch the election results. Such an amazing time in history. I was so overwhelmed and touched when they showed MLK’s church in Georgia and Howard University. You dont realize how this effects everyone else too… He will not only be our pres, he will be an amazing world leader. Too cool. And you, my dear, a true Maverick, giving it to the polling peeps for your camera infarction. McCan’t and Palin aint got nothin on you. What a hard ass geez. And what is with the hole punch ballot? So archaic. You are telling me that in Utah we are all computerized and freakin California can’t get thier schizzle together? Thank God it wasn’t a squeaker…a true impressive victory.

  • frown on prop 8 results

  • OMG….and the Republican Party still thinks she may be a
viable candidate somewhere down the line? Lord, help us, I hope they
lock up their valuables……and my tax money too. You think GB left us
with a debt it may take years to dig out from under…..just wait until
Sarah gets her hands on the checkbook!

  • Everyone is so interested in the “gossip” about Palin in a “towel”, her
shopping and all that silliness…what about the way her intentional
agitation of crowds increased the threats on Sen. Obama! At the time,
that was the part that was most disturbing to me, and to hear it
substantiated almost makes me think limits should be imposed on how far
a candidate can go with the character bashing and character defamation
of their opponent. I think THIS is the thing Gov. Palin should be held
accountable for, and THIS should be the telling defining act that she
is remembered for! Not her greedy little “shopping spree”! (…although
that DOES also show how phoney, narcissistic and shallow Palin
apparently IS!) But we???re taking about putting a man???s LIFE in
jeopardy here! Does no one care about THAT? Does on one care about the
additional stress this caused Michelle Obama and his family? That is
unforgivable and should not be taken so lightly!

  • I still think the best comment I have heard about Palin’s spending
spree was by Paula Poundstone on “Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me!” last
weekend: “If you can’t dress yourself for less than $1,000 per day, I
don’t want you anywhere near the federal budget.” And now it sounds as
if Palin knew they were going to lose, and decided to loot the campaign
    for what she could get.

  • Haha really can take pic?? It is illegal in HK~ But interesting ~

  • @niez_cho - What about absentee ballots??
@pukemeister - LOL, I’m glad you voted your conscience!
@ieatworksleep - Thanks for stopping by!
@owbert - It would have made a great AED episode!
    @fratmom - Indeed!  Thanks.
    @Loltothepower - Awww, thanks Jin!!
    @ibizajb - And The Fonz!
@suez_site - I have some friends who were in Chicago and they said it was amazing.
@cshetrone - Thanks Christine.  I’m so glad your little boy is going to grow up in a world with renewed hope.
@Sc12EeN17aM3 - Are you coming to the rally tonight?
@littlewills - Thanks Wills.  Wish you were here.
@Pat in TX - Hopefully Sarah will never get her hands on another taxpayers checkbook for a long time
@Former OH Republican - Good point. She’s a despicable woman.  The very antithesis of what the Jesus Freaks call intelligent design.
@MLHB860 - LOL, I like!  As if clothes could actually change the fact that her brain is jello.

  • @CareyGLY - i don’t live in the US and only turned 18 this year.

  • Carey, you bastard :) You were fooling the election worker. They were just volunteers, poor him :P Well, you were nice enough not to show his face tho, haha.

  • Great song, nice lyrics, interesting comparison. But “Howdy gay times”? Hardly, if you’re gay.

I live in Chicago. Grant Park was a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Positively historic. Positively galactic! My spouse, Mike (we had to go to another country to marry at the time), and I wept openly among the thousands as our nation’s first bi-racial president accepted what will be an impossibly taxing mandate. I fear for our new president and I pray for him. But I have never been prouder of my country. Never more full of hope for our sacred, extraordinary democracy.

That naive enthusiasm I must now temper. You see, first of all, I have been bothered by this for a long time, but let it go for a variety of reasons: President-Elect Obama is apparently not really bi-racial, despite the photos of his caucasian maternal relations that have been prominently featured throughout his campaign and in the media; He’s apparently “black”; Our nation’s first black president, according to everyone in the “liberal” media.

In pointing this out, I do not by any means intend to downplay the awesome magnitude of this thoroughly American electoral exclamation. It’s an honest miracle! That a man with a coffee-and-cream complexion (and the DNA to match) and middle-eastern name could be elected to the most coveted and powerful position in the world post-9/11 by virtue of his credentials by a nation that in his lifetime had in certain quarters legally barred him from basic civil liberties purportedly accorded by its constitution to all people…well, it raises goosebumps just typing the words. The 1961 Freedom Riders are holding their breaths, God bless them wherever they may be…

But our first “black” president? Their (the media, et al) definition, not his. It negates his heredity. It implicitly defames his beloved grandmother, and mother, and grandfather. And it betrays the racist virus that continues to course through our nation’s veins, liberal and conservative. The “one-drop” rule is apparently alive and well in 2008, which shows just how “far” we’ve come.

We are not a race-agnostic nation, as you might be tempted to believe by Obama’s ascent, gorgeous though the dream might be. Make no mistake, I worship our incoming president and will follow him wherever he leads. He is pretty much messianic in my eyes, and has been for a long, long time (Hillary in the primaries? You must be joking). I always knew with a weird certainty (call it “hope”) that he would one day be our president. But I never would’ve conceived it would happen so swiftly. And I am indeed more optimistic for that. It’s morning in America.

But America has miles to go until we sleep. America, in its heart, elected Bill Cosby this week. I’m not bashing Cos and I’m not saying they have anything in common save the fact that they both were able to transcend race in America. Like the 80s icon who came to symbolize the father ideal in America, no one really noticed or seems to care that our new president is “black.” Just not too black. Not like that Jesse Jackson. Ask Oprah where the line is drawn. Her endorsement and subsequent fainting spell at the rally will cost her, mark my words. Some pundits are fooling themselves and trying to get the rest of us to the drink their Kool-Aid when they talk about a “post-racial” America. Just ask the folks in New Orleans who didn’t live up on the crescent. You’ll find most of them residing in the very lovely, hospitable state of Texas now.

Bigotry is alive and doing quite well in America. And that brings me to the point of this post. By a significant, overwhelming margin, African Americans (and Hispanics) in California on Nov. 4 voted to elect our first black president and simultaneously committed an unforgivable act of hypocrisy. They went to the polls, voted for Obama, and voted to deny me the basic civil and thoroughly human right to marry the person I love.

I am so disappointed. And I hope that if you’ve read this much, you will lobby our new president to take this cause under his wing, politically unwise though it may be.

I started the post by acknowledging the “interesting” comparison to FDR Carey made. Barack is indeed comparable to many great change agents who have occupied the Oval Office. No shortage of comparisons. FDR. Kennedy. Lincoln… Personally, I prefer Lincoln. The Illinois kid from the wrong side of the tracks whose heart and mind were each in their own course tremendous assets to their country when it was most divided and in a free-fall crisis.  Balance. Measure. Steady, confident, competent sense of purpose… Doing the right thing is seldom politically expedient in a functional democracy, but it has defined every great leader we’ve known. It is greatness. I love my husband. And it’s illegal in California. Thanks largely to people who should know better. Is this the change we voted for?

  • this has been both informative and educational.  thanks for sharing the inside of the voting process in the States.

  • @rudyhou - Glad to be of assistance!

  • What do you think of Obama expanding on Bush’s wiretapping laws? (and) what did you think when he bowed to the King of Saudi?

  • @ShamelesslyRed - I don’t agree with warrantless wiretapping, but I do trust the president’s judgment for now, and feel the truth will come out.  The bow was nothing more than a simple faux pas.
