Bachelor Blues & Puppy Love
As a single guy who lives alone, I go out to eat a lot because I don’t really like cooking for just myself. When I do buy things to eat here, they often go bad and sit in my refrigerator or cupboard for months….sometimes years. The other morning Ryan made some pancakes and wondered why they didn’t taste as good as normal. When he looked at the box of pancake mix, he saw that it had expired over 2 years ago. The same thing happened all weekend; with salad dressing, olive oil, vinegar, jam, mayonnaise and more. ALL expired; some much more than two years ago.
My standard response every time they asked how old something was:
“____________ never goes bad!”Apparently pancake mix does. Oh, and fresh eggs aren’t so fresh in December if you bought them before Halloween. Who knew? (In my defense I didn’t even know they were back there! LOL) So last night we ordered Thai food from Sunset Thai. I had an old takeout menu of theirs from 2002. When they delivered the food, the bill was $60 for the three of us, which I was sure was a mistake. Apparently though, the prices at Sunset Thai have gone bad too:
A 92% price rise in 6 years?We also went to see Frost/Nixon at The Grove. The performances were good, but I thought the movie took too much dramatic license with the fact. As the grandson of a History, English & Latin teacher (who sat me down to watch when Nixon resigned), I felt the movie treated Nixon a bit too sympathetically and messed with the actual interview facts too much. If you’re interested; this article by Elizabeth Drew sums it up pretty well.As promised here are the rest of the Chazz pictures from our Christmas tree trimming extravaganza and his first trip to the dog park:
On his first trip to the dog park, he met his new best friend, Weho (short for West Hollywood!)
After playing with Weho (as shown in the video above), he was pooped!

You had eggs from July?! I’m surprised they didn’t come to life and reproduce themselves.
@wherethefishlives - How do you know they didn’t Sam!?
wow how nasty is that. I love thai food :D
Try to stock up on groceries that tend to last a long time — without any artificial preservatives. Most Italian stuff — like capers, olives, and freshly-made pesto — are reasonably lasting.
Being single is no excuse for NOT cooking! It can be an enjoyable activity, and the resulting meal is so much more satisfying than take-out..which is usually loaded with MSG and other unhealthy stuff.
saw a christmas tree like that up in thousand oaks… it’s beautiful!
i eat expired food all the times. and i’m married!
I was in your area yesterday and I had thai food & I have the exact same pictures from the grove. I’m just too lazy to upload haha. I love the night view, the Christmas lights are so pretty:) Wow you had everything expired, that’s so crazy. Check your fridge once in awhile ;)
damn, $60 for one meal – i hardly spend that in a week – including feeding the guys on saturday! pups are cute but what’s with that silly rag around his neck – i’d be embarrassed! but then again, i wouldn’t be going to a dog park – lol. the christmas lights are nice though. i doubt i’ll watch the nixon movie even on tv – i hate reruns! peace, Al
Well Carey, looking at the Sunset Thai menus, the price adjustment becomes quite clear: In 2002 your scallops were simple “Seafood” then. In 2008 though, your scallops became upgraded to “Chef Specialties”! Lucky Scallops they are!
(not so lucky for the customer though…)
@renshuuu - LOL, it’s not that nasty. I didn’t eat the eggs!

@trendyhedonism - Don’t forget my offer Tommy!
@LA2SF_HWY - There’s another pretty one in Atwater Village that’s actually in the ground!
@generasianx - Thanks brother!
@aliceandrandy - LOL, you’ve been Elfed! Ho Ho Ho
@pukemeister - It’s his Christmas collar, it’s not a rag!! Bah Humbug!
@da5id_de - Good catch. I wonder if when people Google Sunset Thai now, they will lose business because of this??
@CareyGLY - hey, us country boys have no idea bout the life of big city dogs!
Having expired foods in the fridge or storage sounds familiar to me. :) The other day I was making flans from scratch, I opened a can of condense milk, I saw the color wasn’t that creamy yellowish anymore, it was indeed turned to a kinda brown color. So I looked at the date, it said ‘Best used by: 09 Mar 2006′. LOL. You are not alone, Carey!
Gorgeous pictures of the lights at night. Very pretty. I am guilty of having some items in the back of my pantry shelves that have sat there for more than I care to talk about. I have to ” spring clean ” my pantry every couple of months. lol.
Weapons of mass destruction – it was right there in your fridge!
I have some cans of evaporated milk that I’m scared to open. I had some club soda in cans that I found, some were empty. I have no idea how they leaked out.
@trendyhedonism - those are good tips!
photos of chazz and weho are very cute.
i’ve heard that old pancake mix can be even poisonous for some people.
santa’s sleigh over the christmas tree is a spectacular picture.
the sunset photo was beautiful with those lovely colors.
i’ve had an old thai menu that i ordered from then was surprised with the new price as well.
the photo with the guys with the christmas lights in the background was a great christmas photo.
and your shopping photo was great as well. helps keep you in the christmas shopping mood.
@ToTaLLy_PhAt - LOL, I also think drug expiration dates are a scam. Does Advil really go bad in two years?? I think they just want you to keep buying it!
@ZSA_MD - Thanks! I’m still not used to California Christmases, but they’re growing on me!
@ElusiveWords - OK, the club soda thing is a little freaky!!
@razzlebash - Poisonous pancake mix!? Who knew!? Thanks for the compliments, as always. I’m glad you enjoy my photos!
Your pictures of the Christmas lights (and the eye candy) are very nice. WOW … the price of Thai food certainly shot up. I guess everything else did too, though.
@fratmom - Yeah, but a 92% increase, still sounds high to me. An any rate, thanks! Ho Ho Ho!
I already told you how wonderful the pics look.
Hahaha, thank god I never ventured to cook at your place.
@Dezinerdreams - Aww thanks. You did cook at my place, you just used the microwave and bought everything from Trader Joe’s!
Great pics. I didn’t realize that dog park was fenced in now.
you definately play your god-father role real well. the puppy seems attached more to you than to his parents.
@CareyGLY - You can’t call that cooking! I “heated” pre-cooked food!
$60 for take-out?!
But I hear you on the food going bad. I think they package stuff for non-singloid people. I’ve been learning to freeze my spaghetti sauce so it doesn’t go bad in the fridge.
@ourcrazycatlady - That’s a good idea, but I think I need to seal my freezer stuff better too, as it always gets ice crystals inside!
@sethrocker - Yep, that park is nicer now. They even have an interim fence like a real dog park!
@rudyhou - Thanks Rudy. It must be my Italian heritage that makes me a good Godfather!
