  • The Commercialization of Pride

Joelle left yesterday, just in time for the next wave of visitors to the H.C.  Former Xangan Paul and his friend are here for a week from Montreal and so is the circus!  No, not Ringling Brothers, but the annual Gay Pride Festival, where the fringe of gay society descend on West Hollywood for a weekend of debacle and debauchery.  (I can’t tell you how much puke there was on the sidewalks.  I’m really “proud” of all the visitors for that!)  Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for “pride”, but the event’s organizers have turned into an all out spectacle.  Corporate sponsorships everywhere you look, ridiculous “anti terrorism” security, $25 admission fees and hideous fencing covering nearly every inch of grass in town.  Not to mention the fact that on every single corner there’s some young fresh faced activist asking you to sign a petition to support gay marriage.  Sorry folks, you were asleep at the wheel the first time.  Asking for my signature 50 times while I walk my dog isn’t going to repeal Prop. 8.  It should have never been on the ballot, and now it’s too little too late.  Why don’t the organizers of these events focus on the next phase of the fight, not the bidding war between Starbucks and Budweiser for who will sponsor Fantasia’s concert?  While the first gay pride marches were meant to commemorate The Stonewall Riots of 1969, modern Pride events have lost site of that historically significant event.  That said, it was pretty funny seeing the crazy Christian protesters clash with the leather queens and hey, Chazz got to meet Chelsea Handler and Gavin Newsom!  (Now he’s met Barack Obama, the mayor of LA and the mayor of San Francisco…and probably the next governor of California!)

Ross the intern was also on the float

Gavin Newsom…might be president some day

  • hmm, might blog about God soon **smells fire in the air**

  • I think you know my stand on the “pride”. I find the whole concept rather stupid. Also, I don’t buy the argument that it is to raise awareness-  from what I have seen they probably end up generating more confusion! I find it too cheesy and corny.

  • Lol i like the picture with the gay couple kissing and the whole brigade of christ-enforcing people to the left :P Pahaa, photo journalism at its best I say.

I’ll sponsor 1 rose to be thrown at Fantasia. :)

  • Wow! I like the picture of the gay couple kissing too! hahaha I like your last pic ;D

  • such a sad cometary – behavior of that sort makes us look ridiculous.  peace, Al

  • lol @ gay butterfly.

the Stonewall is commemorating the 40th anniversary of the infamous riots this year. try and swing thru, Carey!
I’ll buy you a club soda (cause you don’t drink)

    =)

  • What a beautiful gay butterfly!

  • “Crazy Christians” sounds about right. That same chapter of Leviticus has proscriptions against shaving your head and a host of other ridiculous things that the same idiots that are holding the signs would not be lobbying to pass as laws. Cherry-picking, anyone?  Idiots.

  • Haha for some reason, I liked how you captured that “Imagine That” poster in the background of that kissing photo.  Kinda fitting.

  • You just listed some of the reasons I didn’t go to Pride…..ever.

The other reason being “I had no one to go with me.”       Everyone I know says “you should go at least once” but once they go, they never seem to want to go again.

And tsk, tsk…what horrible stereotyping to assume that butterfly is gay.

  • haha i like that picture of the couple making out infront of the protesters

and that butterfly is after all a “SWALLOWtail” butterfly. it’s just asking to be called gay with a name like that. LOL

  • @mr_faust - and brimstone!
@Dezinerdreams - I don’t think it’s stupid to be proud, I just think it’s gone ridiculously overboard.  The corporations know that gay people have a lot of disposable income…they also know that this is the one time a year that all the fringe gays in Buttfuck, CA come to the big city to show their pride.  It really is a circus.
@Loltothepower - 1 rose for Fantasia. LMAO.  You couled beat me in a photo contest any day Jin!
@Got_Takoyaki - Thanks!  Chazz had fun!
@pukemeister - A lot of them are ridiculous!
@wherethefishlives - LOL…thanks Sam….if I had more time, I’d try to photoshop the gay flag colors on the butterfly but I’m lazy!
    @hecticmuse - Here here!
@Roadlesstaken - Thanks!  I considered cropping the billboard out, but kept it in.  I’m glad I did!
@youthinasia613 - We can hang out up here when it’s not so crazy.  Promise.
@Sc12EeN17aM3 - LOL!!!!  Only you would come up with that my friend!  ROTFLMAO!!!
@MaximMan -  I might just take you up on that offer!!  Could I stay at the Hotel Maximfornia??  LOL

  • @CareyGLY - IDK… MaxYork just doesn’t have the same ring to it as Careyfornia. haha Once I’m settle into my new digs, it would be my honor to host you! Stayed tuned for updates….

  • Those Christians have horrible taste in fashion. I wonder what they think they’ve achieved by protesting there? Solidifying their status as douchebags, maybe? lol

  • @Rm2046 - LOL, that’s funny….SNAP!

  • No one should rain on each other’s parade. I believe in freedom of speech. I’m going to recommend this!

  • @CareyGLY - You’re welcome!

  • The only winners are the sign boards and ads makers.

  • I looooove Ross The Intern!

  • Gavin Newsom is as dashing as ever!  Kinda funny where a couple is kissing in front of those banners!

  • @EltonxEvermore - Good point!  Thanks.
@Another_Perfect_Wonder - He is funny…but he smokes like a chimney and stinks!
@curry69curry - You think Gavin is dashing?  I don’t see it.  LOL :)

  • such chaos in your own neighborhood.  sucks.  chez probably enjoyed it, though.

  • @rudyhou - Chazz did have a lot of fun

  • Ho ho ho gay butterfly! He’s so freeeeee!
