Let The Sun Shine…In The Beginning
I’m starting to get the hang of my new camera, and like it more each day. Yesterday, we celebrated Colby’s 9th birthday at Knott’s Berry Farm (America’s first and oldest theme park) and the kids really had a great time. This was my favorite shot of the day:
For a full screen version, click here. Even though Colby wasn’t smiling, I didn’t use this. LOLI didn’t do anything special…just waited for the light to be right, and used a manual setting at 1/60 of a second, 200 ISO, F 2.8, average white balance, and Canon’s vivid color setting. I’m admittedly still leaning how to use some of the touch screen’s focus and balance features. I haven’t even played with the blink detection yet, though it seems like more of a gimmick; along with the smile detection. I wonder if they will ever add any of these features??LOL
By the way, this was my first camera ever. I got it from my aunt when I was 8 years old in 1973. It cost $9.95, and I still have it. I don’t remember what film and flash bulbs cost back then…not to mention developing. I’ll have to dig out some of the photos I took with this camera and show you guys some time. They weren’t bad!I’ll have a lot more practice later this week, as we’re having another mini-GLY reunion. Sabine is flying in from Germany and Marcelo and Emily and Vonda & Nate are coming down, along with a few other surprises. Should be a very busy visit, but we’re all looking forward to it. Here are a few more photos from yesterday. Enjoy!
I got soaked on the log ride!
Tommy went on his first big roller coaster and wasn’t too sure at first; but he eventually loved it, as did his friends!

Tons of awesome and fun photos you have there, Carey! Looks like someone is enjoying their new camera (although, you’ve pretty much enjoyed any camera you had, I suspect)!
neat pictures of good looking boys and tom boy. You always take such good pictures.
@pxlspy01 - Thanks CJ…remind me to show you my very first camera some time. It was a Kodak Instamatic 44 and it cost $9.95. I got it in 1972 and still have it. Take a look: http://www.beckfamily.dk/images/p001_1_04.jpg. I think I’ll add that to this blog!
@ZSA_MD - That’s very sweet of you to say…thank you!!
How nice to have Snoopy at the birthday party! That’s a sure fancy camera you have over there, with its own battery meter!
@CurryPuffy - Plus it gives you a pee break! LOL
Oh yeah… the camera works just great. Look that kid with the pop gun… whoah! Nice shot!
And bumper car ride reminds me of my sisters’ driving.
@reckless_eagle - Thanks Victor! I’ll take you there when you come to Cali!
looked at all the pix over on facebook last night and i have to agree the one you like best is the one i liked the best too – what a shame colby didn’t have a nice grin in it. i’m reading lightning thief and shane is what i visualize grover to look like – lol – quite different than the movie! there’s one pic of tommy in there on one of the rides that’s priceless – one arm tightly around mom’s the other appears to be tightly holding his crotch – terror can’t be described any better – lol. but yeah, the next pic shows his hand more clearly on the lap bar – lol. good job! peace, Al
I have a new camera too that I’m slowly learning (a canon powershot SX120 IS). Your pictures are great. Looks like you’re making better progress than me. But I’ll get there.
I have a nine year old son so I can very well imagine the energy of the day. Lots of fun those boys of nine!
wow nice camera… hohoho i gotta save more to get a better lens =p love the kids….
@pukemeister - I’m lucky any of them were smiling! And no bunny ears! They’re at that age.
@ItsWhatEyeKnow - In my opinion the PowerShots are the best pocket cameras on the market. Make sure to try the vivid color setting…it makes all the difference. Thanks for stopping by.
@lcfu - Your pictures look just fine with the lenses you already have! :)
Wow! Really, really beautiful pictures Carey!
@CareyGLY - The Canon SX20 a little big for a pocket camera (http://alpha.akihabaranews.com/wp-content/uploads/images/2/42/24242//1.jpg), but I have a pocket sized canon powershot too. It is a good little camera. More convenient for certain settings.
@ItsWhatEyeKnow - Oh! That’s a nice one. I have a G9 too, but rarely use it.
haha… wouldn’t we all love to have that imaginative canon 40D ;)
You went on the rides? hahahaha…. I’m not surprised.
Love the first pic with the sun streaming in!
haha i love how someone is on a DS while Colby is blowing the candles
and you look hecka cold after the log ride :oD
@Dezinerdreams - Thank you Vivek! @rudyhou - Maybe someday we will :)
@ElusiveWords - Of course I went on the rides…The kids were there to chaperone me!
@Sc12EeN17aM3 - Of course you noticed the DS Jad…I think it’s so funny. These kids never put them down! I was cold all damn day after that stupid log ride and it was 76°! My shoes were soaked too.
@CareyGLY - it reminds me when gameboy color first came out. when i went to Vegas, every photo had my face in my cousins gameboy LOL
Love the photos! I miss my childhood, this blog brings back those crazy memories of running around with a cork rifle, shrieking around with the gang.
@Cultur3sh0x - Here’s to the good old days!! Muah!
