    Hi Carey,

As soon as we have time, we’ll make it possible for you to opt out of the popup. This will most likely take the form of a setting or checkbox in your account settings that you will have to enable to prevent the popup from appearing.

No worries about the email. It is actually a breath of fresh air to receive such a detailed email compared to the usual one or two liners that don’t provide us with enough information to understand and solve problems.

    -          Ben

Most of you are too young to remember who Long Duk Dong is, but he was the foreign exchange student in the 1984 movie Sixteen Candles (he's the one who tried to use the knife and spoon as chopsticks and well, if you want more YouTube has the goods).  The character would be even more controversial today, and many people believe he represents one of the "most offensive Asian stereotypes Hollywood ever gave America"  At any rate, the other night I was introduced to the actor who played Long Duk Dong while out with some friends.  I had met him before but he didn't remember me.  He told me about being recently features on NPR's "In Character" series, and I told him about my coincidental blog posting last week about the "Stuff Asian People Like" controversy.  I wonder if he'll read it?  At any rate, he laughs at his own character, so that say something.

And speaking of Bruce Lee and Asian stereotypes:

And finally, to tie it all together I have four FREE tickets to Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay at the Arclight tomorrow night, for anyone in LA who wants them.  I can't make it.  First come first served!  It looks like a great movie.  John Cho is really being talked up as a superstar of late.  (He's also starring as Sulu in the new JJ Abrams Star Trek movie.)

@Dezinerdreams - I wish I could, but someone's checking in to the Hotel Careyfornia tomorrow, and I gave the front desk clerk the day off.  LOL :)

i'm probably not helping but i just take all the racial controversies in media for what they were meant for - comedy. as long as it's not just asians we're making fun of!

  • pamfitz99

I loved that movie and unfortunately, I remember when it came out the first time :)  I just saw a rerun the other night and stayed up to watch it way past my bedtime :)  I cannot believe, actually I can, that you met the actor who played the role.  Very fun :)  Love the blog!  Did you at least get an autographed DVD or something out of the meet?

  • CareyGLY

@jassmine - You and I may be the only ones on Xanga old enough to remember that movie Judi!

@Renatojr3 - Yeah, we just saw the poster for that movie at the theater the other day.  Looks good!

@JonasApproved - Totally agree with you Jonas.  Wish more people felt the same about humor!

@pukemeister - The term "star" here is used VERY loosely...but I'll take it

@owbert - Sorry the timing didn't work out.  Thanks for the kind words though Albert!

@generasianx - Sorry Tony.  Tuesday just isn't a convenient night for these things it seems.  We should go see it though.

@ElusiveWords - I waited at the airport for an hour.  Where were you??

@MaximMan - You and me both

@pamfitz99 - Hey Pam!  Next time you check into the HC, we'll have to have a John Hughes film fest!  No autographs.  I'm not a starf**** like some people I know
