  • Up Up & Away in my Beautiful Honeymoon

Tonight we took the kids to The Great Park in Irvine.  They have a huge, tethered helium balloon that stands 118 feet high and holds 30 people.  It flies 500 feet above the park, which used to be the El Toro Air Force Base that was closed in 1999.  We timed our visit perfectly.  We only had to wait about 1/2 hour and the sun was just starting to set when we went up in the balloon.  It’s really a great park, and the balloon ride is free.  We all had a great time.

P.S. When I was little, I was fascinated by hot air balloons, but I before I could say “hot air balloon”, I simply said “honeymoon”.  For some reason, my parents never corrected me, and as I grew older, I continued to call them honeymoons.  Once, when I was in college, I saw three hot air balloons and announced to my friends, “Look, honeymoons!!”  Suffice it to say, I was the laughing stock of the dorm.  Sad, but true!

    Best of the rest.

Here’s a cheesy blast from the past

earthquake [in Los Angeles] was powerful enough that an entire group of people
lined up outside to see ‘Batman’ ended up lined up to see ‘Mamma Mia.’” –

  • even though i’m afraid of heights, i’ve always wanted to go up in a balloon – they have one here in town but it’s like several hundred dollars for the ride – but then again, it’s a regular hot air balloon, the ride lasts about an hour and goes a lot higher.  some really great pix as ususal – especially the sunset.  looks like the kids had a great time.  peace, Al

  • That’s really cool.

  • i love the 4th shot!  btw, is the balloon ride still free?

  • @pukemeister - Tommy was a little scared at first too, but we talked him into it, and he loved it, but if it was a regular hot air balloon, that probably would be a different story!
@jeffersonpart2 - Thanks, it was fun!
@generasianx - Yep Tony, amazingly, it’s still free.  They even give you those beach balls for free.  It would be worth the drive for you.  They also have free concerts on the weekend.  Check the link.

  • haha taking pics of people on their cell while driving, thats hilarious.

i go to school at UCI and i’ve driven around this area alot and read about the hot airballoon ride in the school newspaper but for some reason i’ve never stopped by to check it out. i’ll check it out with some friends and write about it on my blog too. nice pictures

  • @generasianx@stevew918- I KNEW I had seen someone’s Xanga with those balloon pictures, but I thought it was stevew918′s!  I was even searching his site last night for them to add a link, but never found them.  I should have known it was you!  Those were great shots, especially the shadow one.  It look like they’ve done a lot of development there in the past year!

  • That is awesome.  Thanks for sharing, Carey – we’re going to try to head down there soon!

  • yeah, parents if they think what you’re saying is cute, they let it continue.
my favorite is the one with the palm trees and the balloon.
too bad you had to be the laughing stock, cause actually it’s cute and sounds better than just balloons.

  • @razzlebash - LOL, I got over it.  Although when I still see one, my first reaction is honeymoon!  I’m glad you like that picture.  I made my cousin stop the car in the middle of the street so I could take it out the window.  I wish th telephone lines weren’t in it, but oh well!

  • OMG! How did you not get corrected until you were in college! lol

And the  on the earthquake is hilarious! I just can’t stop laughing!

  • @Dezinerdreams - I know!  Cruel huh?  LOL.  I survived though
@Loltothepower - LOL, that reminds me of the first time I was in South Africa.  I was in a bar drinking a bottle of water, and this queen came up to me with a disgusted look on his face and said, “What are you drinking?”  I replied, “Water”.  He looked even more disgusted and said, “Ugh, fish FUCK in wor-ter Dahling!”.    True story.

  • Beautiful!  I have to try that some day…didn’t know Irvine has that…

  • @me_zephyrs - Yeah, you can actually see it from the freeway, and it’s free!
