  • Species Change Operation

Chazz hasn’t been sleeping well the past few nights.  When I asked him what was wrong, he finally admitted that he’s been a little freaked out by the recent news that Cher’s daughter, Chastity Bono is undergoing a sex change operation to become Chaz Bono.  I tried to explain to him that he is Chazz with two Z’s and that no one could ever take that away from him.  Still, his melancholy persists; to the point where I’ve had to go public just like Cher did to People magazine:

    To which I replied:

It’s kind of funny that Chastity might actually be the lucky one if such an operation were possible!  I’m just sayin’.  In the meantime, Chazz’s summer vacation has come to and end.  I’d say it was a pretty successful month.  He met Drew Barrymore and President Obama.  He hob knobbed with Chelsea Handler and learned to solve the Rubik’s Cube.  He even celebrated Christmas in June and discovered he was as thin as a shih tzu!  And tonight at the dog park he was approached by a talent scout who gave me a card for a free screen test.  LOL

I didn’t tell the gal that Chazz was already very close with Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black,
what with the sex scandal and all!
    (Don’t click with kids around.)

Claudio & Ryan come back from Brazil tonight; we’re picking them up at the airport midnight.  It will be lonely around here without Chazz, but starting next weekend, I’m dog-sitting for Garbo & Ruby, so I won’t be sleeping alone long!  Here are the final photos from Chazz’s summer break.  We had a great time at the beach this weekend with Paul & Emili and a lot of fun at the dog park with Sophie!

A full moon at the dog park, and the dogs were howling!

We went to see “The Proposal” at the Arclight.

  • Driving Miss Daisy Crazy

Claudio & Ryan came up with Chazz on Friday.  It’s only been 3 weeks since I last saw him (when he “read” my animal books), and my how he’s grown!  I’m still dog-sitting for Daisy through the end of the month.  Daisy is 9 years old and I’m sure the last thing she wanted to do all weekend was contend with a playful rambunctious puppy.  She was a trooper though, despite her impatience at times.  I think they secretly had crushes on each other.  Just look how they were sleeping in bed with me when I woke up yesterday morning.  Luckily I had my camera by my side:

Admittedly though, they needed a few time outs:

Yesterday we went to the beach at Santa Monica:

We almost dropped to our deaths in this parking garage elevator….then noticed the permit expired in 2002!

  • A Post Oprahlyptic World

I had to go to San Diego for a meeting yesterday.  Got to see a bunch of old friends & colleagues, and it was a picture perfect day.  Parvesh and I had lunch at the Del Coronado, and it was just as gorgeous as when Vivek and I were there last summer.  Such a pretty place!  Afterwards, I drove up to meet my cousins for dinner.

    Boo yah!

    Chocolate chip faced Andy

It was a long day, but a good one!  Certainly better than any day in an Oprah-less world!

  • A Heartbreaking Dancing Queen & A Picnic at the Beach

I’m back in LA and preparing for the next round of guests at the Hotel CareyforniaClaudio and Ryan are coming Thursday to drop off Chazz before leaving for DC for a week.  David & Hyun Ju arrive next week, and after then next weekend I’m heading to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah with Christine & Drew and their new baby!  January is going to be a very busy month.

Here’s a video montage of the best of little Patrick over New Year’s.  It’s a great example of why middle aged, overweight white men shouldn’t dance, sing or even clap! Despite my abysmal lack of rhythm, Patrick enjoyed dancing to Elton John & Abba. He also played soccer in his oceanfront backyard and even went fishing in the house!

Saturday Steve brought Lucie, Jack & Roin over and we went to Rockaway Beach for a picnic.  Afterwards we went bowling and I actually won twice.  (That has never happened to me.  Roin, who’s 9 years old, kept saying that I hustled him!  LOL.  I honestly have no idea how I won, even against the adults!)  At any rate here are some photos from our outing.

  • Blindfolded Eating & Cubing and a New Year’s Concert on the Shore

I haven’t had much time to blog, so here’s a vlog to start the year.  On New Year’s Eve, Roin, Jack & Lucie, the kids at our party, wanted to make a video of me, blindfolded, eating unknown foods that they prepared!  The adults supervised to make sure they didn’t poison or hurt me (Tabasco Sauce on the apple was vetoed), but other that that, the little rugrats had run of the kitchen.  They were nice enough to have the foresight to provide me a barf bag, LOL.  Why I agreed to let them do this, is still a new year’s mystery.  The foods I ate were:

    1) Lettuce, Pickle & Peanut Butter
    2) Apple Juice & Lime Juice
    3) Apple & Salsa
    4) Tztziki & Orange
    5) Sausage, Chocolate & Cranberry

My worst reaction was to #4.  I really hate white and creamy foods, and it shows!! LOL.  (I suspect that Eva, who knows my disinclination towards anything creamy, had a hand in #4.  Vicious!)

After that, as it still wasn’t midnight and since they were kids at an adult party, I showed them a bunch of videos of Tyson and Macky solving the Rubik’s Cube, blindfolded and juggling respectively.  They thought it was a trick and didn’t believe that the videos were real. So I sent Tyson, who had just finished ringing in the New Year with friends in Boston, an instant message. He was nice enough to solve the Cube for them on the webcam, in less than 20 seconds. Needless to say, they were amazed. Thanks Tyson! Happy New Year!

Here are a few more photos from yesterday and today.  The rest can be viewed here.

Facebook finally has a video embedding option, so here are a few more videos from the past two days.  This first one shows a little musical performance on New Year’s Day, led by 3 year old Patrick.  The second one shows Tom & Cathy’s backyard tonight at sunset when it got very cold and windy!  I’ll compile a few more after I get home.  Does anyone know a free and easy to use alternative to Windows Movie Maker for the PC?

  • All is Quiet…A GLY New Year

Update:  It’s 8 AM January 1st and everyone is still fast asleep.  I stayed up until about 4 AM uploading pictures, and have added them to the slideshow below.  In those four hours of sleep over 600 people viewed the pictures!  Last night was a blast, as usual.  And as usual, I spent more time with (and took more pictures of) the kids.  Hope the adults didn’t mind too much!  Happy 2009!

December 31st, 4 PM:  Happy New Year from San Francisco, CA; Pacifica, to be exact.  Our 12th annual gathering of the GLY Gang is in full swing, with people still arriving from all corners of the globe.  It’s hard to believe our far flung group of friends started this tradition in Brazil 11 years ago, and have celebrated New Year’s together all over the world ever since.  As our GLY family continues to grow with marriages and babies, I’m thankful for such wonderful friends.  Let’s hope 2009 and our new president ushers in a new era of change for America and indeed the world.  I won’t have much time to blog over the next few days, but keep checking this website for new pictures, the slideshow below will also be updated.  Happy New Year!  –Carey

  • Weekend PhotoVlog

    Best of the rest…

Claudio’s brother Cris and his wife Valesca are visiting with their two kids Victor & Isabella, so we drove up to Santa Barbara to meet up with Eva (who just returned from Bine’s wedding) and Bassam.  It was a rare rainy day in Southern California, and at first the kids were a little hesitant on the beach.  But soon, the clouds dissipated and it ended up being a gorgeous day!

Song:  Lullaby for a Stormy Night from the album Waking Hour.  Check it out on iTunes!

    Little child, be not afraid
The rain pounds harsh against the glass
    Like an unwanted stranger
    There is no danger
    I am here tonight

    Little child
    Be not afraid
    Though thunder explodes
    And lightning flash
    Illuminates your tearstained face
    I am here tonight

    And someday you’ll know
    That nature is so
This same rain that draws you near me
    Falls on rivers and land
    And forests and sand
Makes the beautiful world that you see
    In the morning

    Little child
    Be not afraid
The storm clouds mask your beloved moon
    And its candlelight beams
    Still keep pleasant dreams
    I am here tonight

    Little child
    Be not afraid
The wind makes creatures of our trees
    And the branches to hands
    They’re not real, understand
    And I am here tonight

    And someday you’ll know
    That nature is so
This same rain that draws you near me
    Falls on rivers and land
    And forest and sand
Makes the beautiful world that you see
    In the morning

For you know, once even I
    Was a little child
    And I was afraid
But a gentle someone always came
    To dry all my tears
    Trade sweet sleep for fears
And to give a kiss goodnight

    Well, now I am grown
    And these days have shown
Rain’s a part of how life goes
But it’s dark and it’s late
So I’ll hold you and wait
’til your frightened eyes do close

And I hope that you’ll know
    That nature is so
This same rain that draws you near me
    Falls on rivers and land
    And forests and sand
Makes the beautiful world that you see
    In the morning

    Everything’s fine in the morning
The rain will be gone in the morning
But I’ll still be here in the morning

For you non-Mac people, you should definitely download the new Picasa.  It’s leaps and bounds above the old version, and in my humble opinion, the best free photo editing software for the PC.  The collages are really nifty, as is the blemish eraser.  Another excellent offering from Google!

On a related note, I’m still trying to figure out a way to get Flickr Pro for free.  Last year, Yahoo pulled a bait and switch with my photos, and they are now holding more than 5000 of them hostage!!  When I converted from Yahoo Photos to Flickr, I had three free months of Flickr Pro during which time I was going to decide if I wanted to keep it or not.  I decided to switch to SmugMug, but before I did, Flickr locked my photos.  You see, they never told me when the 3 months started.  I assumed it was when I got access to my photos. (which was nearly 3 weeks after I requested the conversion!)  Despite them telling me they sent emails, I did not receive them.  (Perhaps they went to my Spam folder, or perhaps Yahoo/Flickr designed the emails knowing they would go to people’s Spam folders and cause them to miss the 3 month deadline, forcing them to pay for access to their own photos!).  I actually like Flickr, but I refuse to pay them $24.95 ransom to get my photos back!  Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Last night I was lucky enough to book a room at the Hotel MarcMikeFornia.  I haven’t seen them since they visited the Hotel Careyfornia last year.  I’ve been friends with Marc since forever, and he and Mike got married in Montreal two years ago.  They live 2 blocks from the Lake, so today at lunch I took their dog Tasha to the beach for a quick walk.  Most people don’t realize how great Lake Michigan is to swim in!  After work today, I took the train up to my aunt’s house in Winnetka.  I’m staying here tonight, and my brother’s coming tomorrow and we’re taking a trip up to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to attend a cousin’s graduation.  We’ll drive back Sunday and my Dad is flying in to O’Hare, so we’ll all go out for Father’s Day before I fly back to Los Angeles.  Have a good weekend everyone!
