    Happy Birthday Eva!!

Since there are very few bad pictures of taken of you in the past 10 years, I put together this slide show to the tune of our group song.  There are a few semi embarrassing ones in here, but mostly you’re still the most photogenic of our far flung group of friends.  Though if I had to pick two of my favorite pictures of you that show your true personality, they would have to be these:

And since I can’t really embarrass you, I have to embarrass myself!   Happy Birthday!!  xo

Alan has just sent me this picture from Lucerne, Switzerland. This is a bill board poster, of which there are several placed around Luzern. It is an advert for some hysterical propaganda from the far-right SVP party, which is quite big in Central Switzerland. Anyway Sicherheit schaffen means establish security. And not only are three white sheep kicking out one black sheep (and yes, it is referring to race) but also the German alliteration, well its abbreviation is SS and I doubt that this is a coincidence.

Former bill boards from this party showed a swiss passports and hands grabbing it. The darker colored hands couldn’t get close to it but the white hands were able to reach it…so it is not the first time.

Another thing that just blows my mind. A poster like this in Germany, the world community would be all over us and they should. But NO media coverage whatsoever about Switzerland.

    Oi todo mundo!

I realize that our lovely EMO lives in Santa Barbara, CA, which is not a bastion of multiculturalism in America.   But I can’t imagine a billboard like that anywhere in the America I live!  (Other than in some people’s minds, of course).

The black sheep notion has been around since the beginning of times (whenever that was).  Today I am counting my blessings.  It’s inspiring that some of my favorite humans find it outrageous :)

I agree.  It’s much cuter.  Just reminds me a bit of the MinuteMen propaganda and other campaigns blaming immigrants for the country’s economic situation.
But mostly, we do all love our black sheep. :)

In Neutral Switzerland, A Rising Radicalism

Islamic Extremists Newly Seen as Threat

    By Craig Whitlock

    Washington Post Foreign Service
    Thursday, July 20, 2006; Page A14

BERN, Switzerland — For centuries, this Alpine nation has successfully relied on a strict policy of political neutrality to insulate it from the wars, invasions and revolutions that have raged outside its borders. These days, a new threat has emerged: one from within.

As they have elsewhere in Europe, Islamic radicals are making inroads in Switzerland. Last month, Swiss officials announced the arrests of a dozen suspects who allegedly conspired to shoot down an Israeli airliner flying from Geneva to Tel Aviv. In a related case, a North African man has been charged with organizing a plot from Swiss soil to blow up the Spanish supreme court in Madrid.

For years, even after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, Swiss officials assumed that their country was one of the last places Islamic radicals would look to attack. Long considered a slice of neutral territory in a world full of conflicts, Switzerland trades on its status as home to the International Committee of the Red Cross and other diplomatic institutions.  Read more…

  • Starry Scary Night

    Van_Gogh-Starry_Night banner

So much to talk about, where do I begin?

I’ve been getting told a lot that I write way too much for anyone to read.  I find that statement rather funny.  Isn’t it odd how we can read a 300 page book over a weekend, but God forbid a web posting goes more than a page?  LOL  Oh well, I guess we can chalk that up to our short attention span in the over stimulated wired age.  Do know however, that I will always be verbose.  It’s in my blood.  I admire the people who can write “haiku blogs” that are more profound than any of my postings, but I simply can’t.  It’s a stream of consciousness thing, and it always has been.

That being said, I do need to ration my time at night better.  I tend to be a night owl, and usually don’t post until after 11 PM and write well into the wee hours.  I do have a bunch of things I need to get off my chest tonight, but I’ll save those rants for another day.  I haven’t been getting near enough sleep of late because I’ve had houseguests the past four weekends, and I’ve been staying up much too late entertaining and writing.  I’ve never needed a lot of sleep.  Even when I was a kid and my parents would put me to bed at 7 PM (crazy huh? maybe that’s why I don’t sleep much now, hmmmm), and I would stay up well past midnight in my room; usually entertaining my brother as the emcee of some game show I invented or some fabulous musical production I had concocted (Big finish!).  Again, hmmmmm, very telling.  As a matter of fact, the only time I ever shoplifted is when I was 8 years old and I stole some little toys at the local hobby shop to use as prizes for my brother when he “won” whatever game show I was keeping him up until midnight playing.  (I guess I never realized he was the only contestant, LOL.)  But I digress. (hmmmmm…notice a pattern?)

Why do I need to start getting more sleep you ask?  Last week, I began sleep walking.  It happened twice, though technically the first time I wasn’t really walking, I was just moving in a very agitated way.  But more about that in a second.

Lately I’ve been having very vivid dreams.  Wonderful dreams that are so real that I sometimes can’t remember the next day whether I’d just dreamt something or if it had really happened.  Scary huh?  Last Tuesday night I was dreaming of swimming in a big pool.  It had something to do with work, and I was swimming to get to the finish line.  Sounds clinical enough, right?  When I got to the edge of the pool, the water level was much lower than the deck, so I had to extend my arms to pull myself up onto the concrete pool deck.  As I reached the deck, I rolled on to the concrete, and proceeded to roll out of my bed!  Now, those of you who have been here, know that I have a very high, mission style bed that sits about 3 feet off my hardwood floors.  As I fell out of bed, my head hit my nightstand, and I landed on my shoulder.  Needless to say, a rude awakening.

Bruised but not battered I managed to go back to sleep.  This time I dreamt of fishing (though I’m hardly a fisherman).  As I was casting my reel, my knuckles scraped the lats of my bedpost, hard enough to make them bleed, which of course caused me to wake up again.

The second night was even scarier, because that’s when the walking part began.  It went down like this….

Sometime during the night, I woke up to go to the bathroom.  I remember doing this, but for some reason I went to my guest bathroom, not the bathroom in my bedroom.  When I came out, I COULDN’T FIND my bedroom!!??  Try as I might, I wandered around my living room, looking for the stairs.

Here’s the kicker though:  I don’t have stairs!  For some reason, and keep in mind I remember this all, I thought my bedroom was upstairs, and I kept opening the broom closet looking for the stairs!  After wandering around for what seemed like a while, I remember getting angry, and saying to myself “Fuck it”!!  I conceded to sleep on the couch, and I’ll be damned, the next morning, I woke up on the couch.

Now, before you start emailing me to get help immediately, I would like to say that I have not had another “incident” since this happened.  I have been trying to get more sleep, and my stress level may have dropped in the past week or so.  Of course, the other possibility is that I really fell asleep on the couch that night, and dreamt the whole bathroom/stairs incident.  I honestly don’t know what happened, but it was freaky.

Friends have suggested I get some kind of lock for my door so I don’t end up outside, or God forbid, driving.  Although, chances are I’m a better driver asleep than I am awake   LOL  Suffice it to say, I’m more aware of my sleep patterns, and am trying to get more rest!  Case in point: It’s 7:40 PM now, and I’m done for the day (methinks!?).  I will keep you posted….don’t call the loony bin yet!

I finally installed my beta version of Joost.  They still don’t have a ton of content, but some of what they have is pretty cool.  The first thing I saw was the Christina Aguilera/P Diddy video and the quality was amazing. The other channels weren’t as impressive, but it has potential.  As a beta tester I have 5 invitations that I can give out.  I’ll make them first come first serve, for whoever wants them.  Take a look at the website and the hardware requirements before you decide.  If you want an invitation, send me an email at careygly@gmail.com Again, first come, first served

Tommy & Cole in the “Big City”

Dar and Lisa brought the boys up today to see Meet the Robinsons at the El Capitan.  Afterwards we went to the Kodak Theater, and had lunch.  It was a gorgeous sunny day and the kids had a blast.  Luckily the Hollywood sign was still standing and flame free.  All the smoke had cleared away too, though it was pretty smoggy when looking towards downtown LA.  Here are some photos of the kids and a few more of the fire.  I’m also including a coupe of videos I took of Tommy and Andy the other night.  I need to teach them a new joke

I’m not a big fan of the traditional news outlets by any stretch, but for a truly excellent overview of the regional powerplay in the Middle East, take a look at this.  So many Americans are ignorant to the centuries of conflict and geopolitical strife in that region.  Yes, for Bush & Cheney it’s about oil, but for the millions of citizens of the Middle East, it’s about geography (and sadly, religion, but that’s another topic).  If you don’t understand a Sunni from a Shiite, take a look at this presentation.  Click to begin:

Update: May 13th – Haditha - Not easy to read, but important.

The Resistance in Iraq is now filling their improvised explosive devices (IED’s) with human feces so that if our soldiers don’t die in the explosion they will die from infection.  Who did they learn this from?  Ask Donald Rumsfeld.  It is so clear that we are not wanted there…by ANYONE, Shiites, Kurds or Sunnis.

Don’t let the words of the title confuse you. They are the technical terms for an affinity for human urine and feces. I’m not talking about the practices as sexual fetishes of some people but as weapons in U.S. military operations.

Currently, a court case is being held at Camp Pendleton in California that concerns the killing of 24 civilians in Haditha, Iraq. The incident was buried in officialdom until a U.S. Marine came forward to challenge the party line that the dead were resistance fighters. All were innocent civilians.

Sgt. Sanick Dela Cruz, who took part in the bloody massacre, has been granted immunity for his testifying as a prosecution witness. According to a Reuters report, “Marine Says Urinated on Dead Iraqi at Haditha,” published on May 10, 2007:  Read More…

The Terrible Killings in Haditha  – The Few, The Shamed, The Marines - March 18, 2007

    flag

I just don’t know what to make of this interview, but I think every serviceman in Iraq or Afghanistan should see it.  And for those of us here, (especially the 110 pound soccer moms driving their 6 year old kids to school in a 3 ton, $45,000 Ford Expedition that gets 14 mpg), it’s a rude awakening (and we wonder why they hate us so much!?).  These ”soldiers” are children  playing war games.  Many of them are 18 or 19 with only a GED.  One of the most frequently asked questions on the Marine Corp. website is “How far will I have to run?”.  This is George W. Bush’s dirty little secret (well, one of them).  My first reaction to the brutal slaying of innocent women and children is that this “soldier of misfortune” should be in prison for the rest of his life for his bloodthirsty rampage.  Though when you watch the interview (Scott Pelley did an excellent job I thought), you can practically see this soldier’s demons haunting him, as I’m sure they will forever.  The question then however, is who’s responsible?  Obviously as the battalion leader he was responsible for ordering his men to “shoot first, ask questions later”.

    marines

But why was he a battalion leader if he had never seen combat?  Though he had been in the Marines for years, he asked  to go back to active duty, because, he wanted  to see combat (??).  The men under him had combat experience while he had none.  So where does the ultimate blame lie?  The Marines who train these kids, many of whom can’t get into college or find a decent job?  The September 11th hijackers? (We all now know, that Iraq played no part in that!).  Donald Rumsfeld?  George Bush?  I think Bush’s reaction to this massacre in the interview is absurd (what else is new?).  He has more blood on his hands than anyone in this “nation destroying war” (ours and theirs). When will it end??  Will we even make it to November 4, 2008??

This 2005 family photo provided by attorney Mark S. Zaid shows Frank Wuterich of Meriden, Conn. Staff Sgt. Wuterich, a Marine Corps squad leader, was charged with murdering 12 people and ordering Marines under his command to kill others during an incident that left 24 civilians dead in the Iraqi town of Haditha in 2005. (CBS)
