  • The End of an Era

It’s a sad day here at the Hotel Careyfornia. This morning at 7:15 AM, 2 Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputies showed up to foreclose on my condo and forcibly evict me.  They were actually nicer about it than I thought they would be.  They allowed me to gather up some personal belongings and pack them in a suitcase, but they said I had to be out by 8 AM, as the county was sending a moving company in to remove my things.  Furniture and the like will be sold at auction.  I’ll be able to keep personal mementos like photos, but that’s about it.  Luckily, they did let me keep the sign!

As I write this from the coffee shop on the corner of what once used to be my street, I’m reminiscing about all the happy times and satisfied guests I’ve hosted over the past 6 years.  Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.  I’m not the first person impacted by the global economic meltdown and I won’t be the last.  Sadly though, the famous “Fornia” name has been sullied and I’m sorry to say that we must end our Platinum VIP Guest program.  All accrued points will be donated to the foreclosure fund.  We appreciate our guest’s patronage over the years.  Here’s a glimpse at some happier times:

I’ll be staying with friends for the next few days until I figure out what to do.  I must say, this is a bad way to begin April!  It’s even worse than last year!!

  • A GLY VIP

The Hotel Careyfornia welcomed an honored guest today.  Joelle arrived from Santiago, Chile.  She was actually the first person who ever visited The Hotel Careyfornia when I moved here in 2002.  The place has changed quite a bit since then!

My first visitor in LA.  Joelle lived here before moving to Uzbekistan and then Chile

Before we got our famous moniker…

We’ve had a few renovations since then!

Joelle and I have traveled all over the world together; spending New Year’s Eve with the “GLY Gang” on countless continents:

She’s in L.A. until Tuesday.  Claudio & Ryan will come on Friday, and Bassam on Saturday.  We might head up to Santa Barbara Sunday to see Eva.  Tonight we went to Venice to have sushi at one of Joelle’s favorite old haunts, The Canal Club.  Good times!

A quick lunch down the street at Basix

Miso soup, edamame, cucumber salad and sushi at Canal Club

Joelle was the one who had been flying all night, but I look more tired!

  • Home But Not Alone

My work week from hell is finally over and we had a big celebration with the team in the Pope room of Buca di Beppo.  We thanked everyone for a job well done and I drove home excited to sleep in my own bed for the first time in a long time.  (I give up my bedroom to guests of the Hotel Careyfornia.   It’s only fair, given the odd hours I keep!)

I actually checked my overflowing mailbox when I got home   (for the first time in months) and was surprised to find two post cards from two places that surprisingly I have never visited:  Mauritius and Latvia!  It’s rare for me to get a postcard from somewhere I haven’t been, so kudos to V and David!

Luis & David and Claudio and Ryan stayed at my house while I was gone and I saw photos on Facebook of the fun they had!  It’s good to know that people enjoy the H.C. even when the proprietor isn’t around!

And how many hotel guests leave gifts when they check out??  This is what I came home to:

How sweet is that!?  Thanks guys!!

So after I finally got home, I was sitting on the couch watching American Idol and I felt strangely alone.  I began lamenting the fact that there was no dog (or people) in the house for the first time since Christmas!  (I’ve been dog sitting Daisy and/or Chazz and/or Chanel and/or Garbo & Ruby and/or Roscoe since who knows when!)  Suddenly there was a knock on the door.  I opened it and my neighbor Jessica was standing there with tears in her eyes.  Her newborn baby had developed jaundice and had to stay in the hospital.  She was understandably upset and asked if I could watch her dog Sophie for a few days.  Needless to say, the Hotel Careyfornia and Pet Motel wasn’t empty for long.  Sophie’s a good dog.  She sits out on the patio all day sunning herself and occasionally comes in my office and jumps in my lap for a while.  I’m happy to report that baby Jaden should be coming home from the hospital tomorrow, so all is well.

Sophie sits on my lap while I work!

  • The Abba Reunion Tour

When Halloween is on a Friday, it makes for a very long weekend.  After surviving several assassination attempts on Friday night, I headed up to Oxnard to photograph Claudio, Ryan, Julia and Susan’s transformation into Abba!  Ryan made the boy’s outfits, and he really outdid himself.

The GRAND entrance….Take a chance on them…They even did better than me!!

Luckily, the Sarah Palin at the party on Saturday night came with her own moose, so she didn’t have to shoot me!

More dancing, featuring The Spice Girls, Abba, Sarah Palin & friends, performing
such classics as Xanadu, Dancing Queen, It’s Raining Men and more.

    Best of the rest…

After returning to LA, we went to a No on 8 rally at the bottom of my street.  Then, Luis and David drove from Las Vegas to pay a visit to the world famous Hotel Careyfornia.  We just had time for a quick dinner before they had to jet off to D.C.  All in all it was a great weekend, but I’m tired!  Tomorrow night I’m going to see Tyson at The Magic Castle.  Should be fun!

Here’s some video I shot walking down Santa Monica Blvd.  I was encouraged by all the supporters honking their horns, but then again, this is West Hollywood.

  • A New Fornia Family Member

Mike came home from his business trip on Sunday and we went to breakfast and celebrated his birthday.  I had a special gift for him as well.  His loft, has officially become the newest member of the “Fornia” family of luxury boutique hotels worldwide.  This honor, adds “The Hotel Mikeyfornia” to the pantheon of legendary resorts like The Hotel Careyfornia, in West Hollywood, CA.

Founder and General Manager of Fornia Hotels Ltd., Carey Anthony, surprising Mike on his birthday, with the news that his home is now a 5 Star Diamond “Fornia” property!

Here’s a short video tour of our San Diego flagship hotel, The Hotel Mikeyfornia

After breakfast we drove over to Coronado Island and the Hotel Del Coronado (a modest property by Fornia Ltd. standards).  While there, I found my next hotel investment:

We walked along the beach and took some video of the grounds, as well as our trip back over the bridge:

It was a picture perfect California day:

I had Vivek take this out the window while driving over the bridge at 60 mph.

On the way home we stopped in Mission Viejo for Darlene’s birthday celebration with my family.  Happy Birthday Dar!  Thanks to Mike for the accommodations.  Happy Birthday to you too!  xoxo

  • The Boys are Back in Town

After Friday’s Sound of Music extravaganza, the Hotel Careyfornia prepared for its next wave of visitors.  Emmy weekend is always a busy one at the H.C. and this weekend was no exception.  Adam & Lorenzo flew in from Washington DC.  Sadly their luggage didn’t arrive until 3 AM this morning, but that didn’t stop them from painting the town pink.

Before heading out for the evening, Claudio cooked up his famous Angel Hair Brasil, named appropriately enough after his own wispy, thin, angel like hair.

After dinner it was time to try out the Hotel Careyfornia’s newest amenity, luxurious custom towels!!

    Body not included.

And lest you think these boys come by their looks naturally, you should know it takes a LOT of preparation!!

    No, it’s not Halloween!

    Not to mention costume changes:

Ryan looks good in my $400 shirt.  Don’t you think?  LOL

The H.C. even offers complimentary butt massages, if you’re under the weight limit!

This morning we had breakfast, and then Claudio and Ryan headed to a pool party, while Adam and I explored the sites of West Hollywood:

We ran into these guys walking down Santa Monica Blvd.  If you need a haircut, call Alexander Stabler at 310-652-0830.  He’s on the right.  LOL

Since the Emmy’s were downtown tonight, we decided to stay in and not deal with the traffic.  I thought there would be an after party at the Mondrian next door, but it was over at Morton’s and they keep the paparazzi across the street, so it’s hard to get any decent photos.  I’m heading out again tomorrow for the week.  Have a good week everyone!

  • The Three Faces of Claudio

Ryan’s sister Renea and her friends Laura and Kristen took a road trip from Missouri to California this week, getting their kicks on Route 66.  It’s the first time in the Golden State for all of these Midwestern beauties, and of course they made their way to the Hotel Careyfornia!

Last night though, Claudio & Ryan invited us to their new home.  It was the first time Vivek ever went to a barbecue!  He liked it a lot, and enjoyed visiting with other college students his own age.  LOL.

I set my camera on the tripod and took 3 group shots:

As you can see, Claudio looked quite fabulous in the first shot.  But he soon invoked his classic sneer in the second shot, and a new and wacky persona I’d never met before, for the third picture:

In the classic film, “The Three Faces of Eve“, Eve White is a quiet, self-effacing wife and mother who has headaches and occasional blackouts. Eventually she is sent to see psychiatrist Dr. Luther, and while under hypnosis her “alter personality”, wild, fun-loving Eve Black, discloses herself. With Eve Black on the loose, Eve White’s husband leaves her and abandons their daughter. Under continued therapy, a third personality appears, the relatively stable Jane.

    Hmmmm…I wonder who’s who??

    Hollywood pictures tomorrow   I’m tired!

  • The Best Little Kennel, Boutique Hotel & Parking Garage in Southern California

It was a busy afternoon at the Hotel Careyfornia.  Lisa ,Joel & the boys are going to Hawaii for 9 days and I’m watching their dogs, Shadow & Oreo (named after my Oreo!).  They’re parking their car here at my place (just like Claudio is), so now I have 3 cars.  That’s kind of ironic seeing that my own car was in the shop for four months up until recently.  So when Lisa & Joel got here, I took a late lunch and we went to Jerry’s Famous Deli.  After that we headed to the airport, where, coincidentally, Vivek had just flown in from Delhi, India, by way of Seoul, South Korea.  He’s here for an internship, and will hopefully get some good news about the Project Runway application he submitted.  (I’m really hoping for a ticket to the Oscars next year Vivek, especially since you didn’t bring me a souvenir from Korea!!)  Vivek was super tired after his whirlwind trip to Korea and flight to LA, so we did a quick drive down Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, and the sites of Hollywood (Grauman’s, the Kodak Theater, etc.) before he retired for the evening to get a good night’s rest and start the first day of the rest of his life tomorrow!

    The obligatory pose!

    A very dangerous picture!

“This is is the day…your life will surely change.”

    …and Pet Motel.

    Blog buddies!

I hope this song is good luck for you Vivek.  It was playing on a fateful day in 1990 when I made a decision that would change my life forever.  It involved switching jobs, agreeing to take care of two children and moving from Chicago.  I never looked back, and I hope that this too “is the day your life will surely change.”

  • Happy Anniversary Chinatown

    collage [800x600]

Here’s a quick photoblog.  We started the day with brunch on the Sunset Strip, and then headed to Book Soup.  The Getty Center was next on the agenda, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect day for that.  Deep blues skies, a nice breeze and 80°.  For dinner we headed to historic Chinatown for its 70th Anniversary party and had a great time.  Tomorrow we’re off to the beach.  Now, I’ll sleep.
