  • LA Observed, Lunch Buddy & Doggie Cell Phones – Only in LA

I went to the famous Ford Theater tonight to see a show with Raul.  I had no idea what this show was about before we went.  All I knew was that it was being performed by a “cultural comedian” or “histo-tainer” named Charles Phoenix:

“Celebrate the 1950s, 60s and 70s theme parks, tourist traps, car culture, space age style, parties and more with Charles – all in glorious color, and all accompanied by his discerning, gleeful, and often hilarious commentary.”

Basically what the show was comprised of was a 2 1/2 “retro slide show” of some of the most hilarious old slides that everyone in my generation grew up with (God I sound so old!).  The slides were from all over the U.S. but mainly from Los Angeles; all accompanied by the wittiest, most acerbic and hilarious commentary I’ve ever heard.  No slideshow I saw as a kid was ever like this.  I was constantly laughing out loud.  It was really enjoyable.

Here are some sample slides.  He points out the funniest things about them, that you would never think of.  You can sign up for the “Slide of the Week” on his website and if you’re really interested in this kind of kitsch, you can check out his book.

And here are a few photos I took.  Nothing great, no tripod or flash, but you get the idea.

For those of you interested in the history of this sometimes overlooked American City, the Los Angeles Times in conjunction with UCLA have put together a fascinating website.

UCLA’s Department of Special Collections owns about three million news photos from the original Los Angeles Daily News and the L.A. Times, covering more than seventy years. Now some 5,700 of the images have been selected by researchers and put online at a searchable, browsable new website.

I work from home (when I’m not traveling) and this is the view outside my office window:
To give you some perspective, the white building to the right of the palm tree in the third picture is the Mondrian Hotel, home of the Sky Bar.  It’s next to the House of Blues on Sunset Blvd, which are both a half a block from my house.

What you can’t see in this picture unfortunately is the huge avocado tree that used to be in my front yard just beyond this foliage.  The reason you can’t see it is because it was cut down last month   Even though I’m not a fan of avocados, I loved that tree.  It was big, and twisted and fun.  The kind of tree you would love to climb or set up a tree house in.  Sadly the tree was diseased and had to be cut down.  I don’t know the specifics of tree diseases, but from what I heard, the poor guy was quite sick.   I regret not having many pictures of this tree, but here’s one from last Thanksgiving with my parents.  It kind of gives you an idea of what it looked like:

    dadfrontyard

There used to be a squirrel who lived in that tree ever since I lived here.  I know it was the same squirrel because he used to come by my office window a lot.  He was very tame, and even when I had the window open, he would come by and not be bothered  as I talked on the phone or typed on my keyboard.  He also had a bit of a limp.  Since they cut the tree down, I haven’t seen him as much, but today when I went out to lunch, guess who I saw sunning himself on my side gate?!  He actually kind of scared me when I saw him, but he didn’t move. For a second I thought he might be dead, but then I noticed he was breathing.  Luckily I had my camera in my pocket (I’ve started carrying my SD800 everywhere I go, as it’s so compact).  Here’s my little buddy taking his afternoon siesta.

    siesta

He looks a little skinnier now that he’s not on an avocado diet!  LOL

Incidentally, the other thing I often see out of my window during the day is various Hollywood types walking their dogs.  I snapped this picture a while back of Rachel Bilson (from The OC), walking her dog (in that outfit) at noon on a Wednesday.  LOL  I’m not sure where she was coming from or where she was going, but I thought it was pretty funny.

I took this picture sneaking out the curtain of my patio door, and not using a flash, but you get the idea.

    From Defamer:

    Introducing the Doggie Cell Phone:

    petcell.jpg

As if the L.A. dog population isn’t already just a bunch of pampered assholes who crap wherever they like and expect the rest of the world to trail behind them and clean up their gilded messes with an attentive, gloved hand, the new PetsCell mobile phone promises to elevate them to another level of privileged insufferability. Soon, dog parks all over town will be filled with the abrasive chatter of cockapoos bragging to their pals out for a jog at Runyon Canyon about the shar-peis* they mounted last night at the Chateau Marmutt, coarsening an already obnoxious local canine culture.

[*As dumb as this concept is, we're still not gonna make the bitch joke. Even though we suspect that the existence of this object--even more than the Paris Hilton stuff and the wildfires-- is a sure sign the Reckoning is finally upon us.]

Three USA educational institutions were commissioned by the  government to discover why the human penis is the shaped the way it  is.

Colgate University allocated a budget of $500,000 for research.  After 2 years they concluded that the reason the head of the penis is wider  than the shaft is that it fits better, when in situ, so to speak. This would  prevent leakage of semen and increase the probability of successful  fertilization.

I’ve posted this video before, but I think it’s worth watching again.  It concerns why America is no longer #1, and I agree with all of it (except the Brazil & soccer parts LOL).  I’m heading out for the evening, so probably won’t be posting much more today.  I’ll give you guys a break from reading my rants tonight.

TIME Magazine asked who you thought should be on the list of the 100 most influential people of the year. Over 200 candidates were given a rating of 1 to 100. And your #1 choice? Let it Rain! The Korean R&B phenom had almost half a million votes, over 100,000 more than runner-up Stephen Colbert. And just take a guess who was #3??  LOL

And finally, lovely Joelle, part of our NYE gang, has been sending regular, fascinating emails about her stint in Santiago, Chile as a diplomat.  I certainly think she enjoys it much better than her last 2 year stint in Uzbekistan!  So thanks for the updates Joelle.  GLY!

    **BREAKING NEWS**

As previously mentioned, it was 95° F (35° Celsius) here in Los Angeles today.  The humidity was only about 5%, and some asshole decided to light another fire in the Hollywood Hills today.  This time the fire is burning by the famous Griffith Park Observatory (click for pictures from when I was there in November with my family).  The Observatory was featured in many of the scenes from the James Dean film, “Rebel Without a Cause”.  The LA Zoo has been evacuated, but the animals remain. They’re trying to figure out a rescue plan now, should they need one.

Currently they’re saying 200 acres have already burned.  The idiot who deliberately lit the fire is in the hospital being treated for burns.  I was supposed to go the Seth & Jessica’s house tonight for dinner.  They live about 3 miles from Griffith Park.  I’m not going, but Seth said he would try to send some photos.  Let’s hope the winds die down.  I live about 7 miles from the fire, but I don’t think the wind is blowing this way.  Los Angeles has not had any measurable rain since last July!  The whole city is a giant tinderbox.  Kudos to the brave firefighters on the front lines.  Read more…

  • 5000 & Bestiality :-)

    Link to all weekend photos.

     tysoncarey

Now that I’ve got your attention (see subject) I wanted to point out that today I will reach a milestone of sorts.  Sometime in the next few hours I will welcome the 5000th visitor to my website.  I started this site back in December as a creative outlet for my writing and photography.  Since then I have learned many things about this close knit community known as Xanga.  A year ago I would have never dreamed of publicizing my life in this manner.  I think we all benefit from sharing our collective human experiences.  What’s nice about this community is that it allows us to connect with a worldwide audience and highlight our similarities as well as our differences, thus realizing the one common denominator; love for our families and friends, and wanting what’s best for them.  I have always strived to emphasize this in my international travels and with my friends from other countries.  Blogging allows me to expand that concept.  Just look at my last 100 hits, and a few of the places they came from:

     map

    legend

     countries

A sidenote here, the visitor shown above from Romania, came to my site as a result of this Google search:

    Referring URLhttp://www.google.ro…&hl=ro&start=20&sa=N
    Search Enginegoogle.ro
Search Wordsveterinary dog masturbation  (and yes, I’m the #1 Google result)

So, aside from kinky Romanian bestiality fetishists, I hope that this site and indeed all of our blogs, help in some minute way to ease tensions in our conflicted world.  I recognize that the U.S. is not really looked upon as favorably as it used to be in the rest of the world.  Much of that is warranted, but some of it is not.  We are not all a reflection of our leaders or our mass media.  We are individuals that make up a greater good.  Thus we need to band together and recognize the dangers in our post cold war world, so that we don’t all get annihilated.  I just ordered a book on Amazon called “Atomic Bazaar” which I heard about on NPR today:

The Rise Of The Nuclear Poor
    [ Listen ]
In his new book Atomic Bazaar, author William Langewiesche explains why nuclear bombs are the weapons of choice for poor and poorly governed nations. He also reveals how “the new stateless guerillas” acquire the components of a nuclear bomb and how these groups will eventually produce and implement nuclear weapons of their own. Acclaimed journalist William Langewiesche joins Larry Mantle to offer an informative and critical framework for understanding the burgeoning global threat of nuclear terrorism.

So….4970 down….countless to go.  If you’re my 5000th visitor, and you live in LA, I’d be glad to buy you lunch.  If you don’t live here, I’ll buy you lunch when you come or when I’m in your city.  It’s a small world after all!

You are the man of the family now.  You are the man.

On a much “lighter” note, I snapped this photo of Maria Menounos (a tabloid reporter) the other night at that movie premiere we attended.  We all noticed how much of a pig she was, grabbing handfuls of pizza rolls and stuffing her face with other appetizers that waiters were walking around handing out on silver trays.  I wondered how the hell she could be so thin.  Turns out she “used to be” a compulsive eater.  Newsflash: she still is….she’s probably just bulimic now.  LOL.

  • Hooray for Hollywood

    HollywoodSign

As most of you probably know, Saturday is The National Day of Climate Action. If any of you are interested in hiking up to the Hollywood Sign, let me know.  There will be some great photo opps.   If not, there are events all over.  You can check www.stepitup2007.org  for more info.

On this one spring day, there will be hundreds and hundreds of rallies all across the country.  There are gatherings in every state, and in many of America’s most iconic places:  on the levees in New Orleans, on top of melting glaciers on Mt. Rainier, even underwater on the endangered coral reefs off Key West.  In Florida they’re hoisting a huge boat up in the air to show people where  the water levels will be in 50 years!

There will be rallies outside churches, along the tide lines in our coastal cities, in cornfields and forests and on statehouse steps. Every group will be saying the same thing: “Step it up, Congress! Cut Carbon 80% by 2050.” As people gather, pictures will be linked in real time via the web–before the weekend is out, it will be the largest protest the country has ever seen. Here in Hollywood the peaceful demonstration will take place at:

    ***THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN***

    April 14, 2007 01:00PM to 03:00PM

Event Description:  Take a hike to the Hollywood Sign!
Location:  Hike up there through Bronson Canyon, from Canyon Drive in Hollywood.
Directions:  Drive north up Bronson Avenue until it becomes Canyon Drive. Continue up Canyon Drive until it becomes Brush Canyon Trail. At the end, the road enters the gates to the park which is at the bottom of Bronson Canyon. Either park up here, or keep driving on Brush Canyon Trail until you reach the car parks on the right or later on the left. Now it’s time to take a hike up the dirt trail until we’re all underneath the Hollywood Sign.

I certainly hope you guys aren’t getting tired of dogs and babies, because you’re going to be seeing a LOT of them on this blog.  Babysitting and dogsitting are two of my favorite things to do.  Do you know that some professional dog-walkers in this crazy town make 6 figures??  Only in Hollyweird!

Today, Seth and Jessica dropped off their dogs, Garbo & Ruby (I did a blog for the dogs last year, before I started this one, LOL), for a mini-vacation at the luxurious Hotel Careyfornia.   They brought their 16 month old daughter Hannah (the genius child….she’s working on the Rubik’s Cube, watch out Tyson….she loves it!) and I snapped some shots.  (Mind you, this is in between phone calls from the Ford Child Modeling Agency and Toyota, who needs a precocious red head for their latest commercial.  Two words:  Danny Bonaduce!!)  j/k (Don’t freak out Jessica!) LOL

Hannah really is smart though, she’s got the vocabulary of a six year old, and man can she sing!  She makes Sanjaya sound like William Hung!   Anyway, I’ve got the dogs until Wednesday.  It’s funny, whenever they stay with me they need a vacation afterwards.  I walk them for miles every evening, all around West Hollywood.  They attract a lot of attention.  At home they’re used to going to bed at 8 or 9 with Hannah, and when they’re here, we sometimes go for walks at 3 AM, when I’m done writing this thing!  So, needless to say, their schedules get all out of whack, but they certainly have fun!  Have a good evening everyone.  Hope to see some of you at the rally tomorrow!

    imus

First of all, I’m aware that Sanjaya came before the serious stuff, but I swear every other Google search that comes to my site from anywhere in the world, comes for Sanjaya.  It’s crazy!  Anyway, like a lot of Americans, I’m troubled by the racist remarks of Don Imus.  I’ve never listened to or watched the guy.  Frankly every time I see his face on TV, I cringe.  He makes Howard Stern look like Brad Pitt!  What he said was indeed racist and stupid, though I’m not sure why there’s such a big stink now.  From what I read, this guy has been a hate monger for years.  I wonder why there wasn’t such a public outcry when Mel Gibson or Michael Richards spewed their rants?  I don’t remember this kind of uproar in those two cases.  I live literally a block away from The Comedy Store where “Kramer” went crazy.  There were reporters and of course Jesse Jackson out in front of that place for about 3 days, and then it miraculously subsided.  What’s up with that?

I do believe however, that it is a slippery slope when corporations encroach upon freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution to every American citizen.  Let’s face it; Don Imus has been spewing this hateful nonsense for years.  Why is it news now?  How ironic is it that the 3 year saga of the Duke lacrosse “rape” case was dismissed this week?  Two examples of disenfranchised black women vs. admittedly privileged white males.  I really don’t know what to make of it.  Do you?  There’s certainly enough hate to go around with conservatives though, and they all stand behind the Patriot Act, until it’s their ass on the line.  Take a look:

Limbaugh: Gonzales is “under fire by white liberal racists in the Senate”

Beck continues attacks on ABC colleague O’Donnell

CNN’s, ABC’s Beck on Clinton: “She’s the stereotypical bitch”

Limbaugh suggested Edwards camp “leak[ed]” false information to Politico reporter “to jump-start the campaign”

Beck said “I’m a little ashamed” for calling O’Donnell “a fat witch” — then added, “But she’s so fat”

Beck smeared ABC colleague Rosie, claimed “I never said that Hillary Clinton was a bitch”

These people all think WAY too much of themselves.  Rush Limbaugh this morning was saying that the Imus situation could actually help the troops in Iraq.  I like to listen to Rush sometimes, just because of the whole, keep your friends close and your enemies closer rule.  But this morning, I had to turn him off.

Meanwhile, in Washington, President Bush is still searching for a brain.

    Nobody Walks in LA??

As the popular song goes, “Nobody walks in LA”.  The nice thing about where I live (West Hollywood), is that I walk everywhere,  In fact, if I can’t walk there I usually don’t go, as I can’t stand to drive in this city (and I can’t afford to get any more speeding tickets!).  So here are some shots I snapped as I was walking home from my dentist’s office this glorious California afternoon.  Oh, and don’t forget, Entourage and the final season of The Sopranos start Sunday; set your DVR’s!!  I saw Entourage being filmed by my dentist’s office…Ari and Lloyd were there.

    tattoos

    Tattoos

Raymond/Jigg, I originally wrote a much longer reply to your tattoo post, then accidentally hit my back space key and lost everything.  I learned my lesson that whenever I write more than a paragraph, I’m going to copy and paste it from my email!  Having said that, I will try to compose my same thoughts.  The question though, is whether this new post will be better or worse than the one I lost?  There are valid reasons for each response, just like there are valid reasons to get a tattoo or not get a tattoo, or whether something you do now, will be thought of as better or worse later in life.  The reason this is a fairly controversial topic, is because it is such an individual decision.  There is no one I know that could talk me into, or out of getting a tattoo if I really did or did not want one. (Let’s assume there is no alcohol in this equation).  Now, I’m a very strong willed person, and I realize not everyone is.  However, it is an important decision because theoretically you will have to live with that decision the rest of your life.

You make a very eloquent case (both in this post and the ones you link to), why this decision is an important one for you.  What you need to decide for yourself (as I think you’re really asking here), is whether or not you can have a relationship with someone who is so diametrically opposed to your views on this subject?  Keep in mind that we are all products of our environment.  The way we were raised, our religious beliefs or lack thereof and our personal experiences.  A girl who was mugged or sexually molested by someone who had a tattoo, might not be able to get over that correlation.  Conversely, if a tattoo reminds you of a wonderful person or experience in your life, you might be more apt to have a tattoo or at least like them on others.  If you’ve had a friend who has gotten hepatitis or worse from a dirty needle, it might factor into your decision as well.  You could argue that there are completely safe methods, but again, it’s all about perceptions.  It’s kind of like visiting a city you’ve never been to, and how your opinion of that city is formed because of the fact that you were alone or with a friend or local.  Your perspectives are different.

Now, let me play devil’s advocate for a minute.  You again speak quite learnedly about why you feel tattoos are art forms and essentially life’s storyboard.  You later edit yourself however, to tell us, your faithful readers, that you would always keep your tattoos hidden from the outside world.  This line of reasoning is completely logical as (American) society has not yet come to terms with the appropriateness of such “art”.  Therefore you (intelligently I think), have concluded that you cannot let your beliefs keep you from attaining the goals and status that you want for yourself (and your future family).  Having said that, would Leonardo cover the Mona Lisa?  Would Michelangelo shroud The David?  Admittedly then, you must ask yourself the same question.  How much are you willing to compromise?  How much should you be willing to compromise for a potential mate?  How much should they be willing to compromise?
I, like you, find tattoos sexy.  But unlike you (I think), I do not find this at all sexy or attractive.  Now, just to clarify, I think Angelina Jolie is attractive to nearly everyone; gay, straight or otherwise.   I find her tattoo however, somewhat tacky with such an otherwise beautiful ensemble.  (Of course maybe I’m just sickened by the fact that the tattoo was for Billy Bob Thornton, LOL).

The last and final thing I will dare to bring up, is the future.  No one knows what will happen in their future.  Happiness, heartbreak, pleasure, pain. One thing for certain however, is that unless you are Dorian Gray, you, like all of us, (God willing) will get old.  Now, I don’t know you, but you appear to be an attractive and relatively fit young man (from the photos you’ve posted through the years).  Now you are Asian, so you’ll probably look like that when you’re 70 (see, some stereotypes can be good j/k).  But to me personally, tattoos are usually not that attractive when they’re all shriveled up and wrinkly.  I suppose it depends on where they are, but the point I’m trying to make again, is that it’s a permanent, personal decision that may not be right for everyone.

I appreciate the comments you made on my blog.  Though you say that your etiquette post was not your best work, it doesn’t matter.  It was better than 90% of the drivel you read on the Internet, and it introduces you as someone with good manners, strong views and a good moral compass.  You are likely more conservative than I am (though one could argue that tattoos are hardly conservative; your mother for one), but that’s what makes these debates so lively.  Keep up the good work.  Your blog is a breath of fresh air, and a credit to your readers.  Having gone back to the beginning and just skimming a few posts, I’m sure it will be a testament to a well lived life as you continue to grow older and wiser. Update: 4/5/07: I’ve been getting a ton of hits from a Jake Gyllenhaal fan site I can assure you all that this is all true.  If you continue moving forward you will see photos from Morocco, but none of your star, sorry. (Though I did see him in Whole Foods grocery store once several months ago.  I’ll try to get a cell phone picture next time.  I had no idea he had so many fans

This just came from my friend Carol, who is an Art Department Coordinator and lives in Studio City. We’ve been friends for over 20 years. She was actually my college professor and I baby-sat for her kids. When shedecided to stop teaching, she came to Hollywood to follow her dreams. She’s worked on dozens of movies, and her latest is called “Rendition” starring Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal and Meryl Streep. It sounds like anamazing film, and quite topical, because of its torture theme (see my post onthe Ghosts of Abu Ghraib. I can hardly wait to see it! Her experience in Morocco was much the same as mine. A truly beautiful country.

I can hardly believe it. After all the anticipation last winter and all the hard work these last few months, and after four windy days on location in Essaouira on the coast, we finished filming in Morocco on Thursday and the wrap party was last night. The party was a very classy affair. It was held at a private villa in an oasis called the Palmeraie on the outskirts of Marrakech. (Julia Roberts stayed there when she was working on CharlieWilson’s War.) There were fire eaters, stilt walkers in elaborate costumesand makeup, belly dancers, red carpets everywhere, men dressed in beautiful robes, light shows, torches, candles, smoke effects, horses decked out like they were in parade dress, Moroccan food, open bar, drums, music and lots of dancing. I’ve never experienced anything like it. I’ll send some photos next week. (I left them at the office.) For crew gifts, they gave us eacha leather portfolio custom made here in Marrakech with Rendition embossed inEnglish on the front and in Arabic on the back. We also got T-shirts andhats. I bought a few items that were used as set dressing and they will be reminders of this unique experience. Our director (Gavin Hood) gave a lovely speech in which he expressed his joy about this cultural exchange that was Rendition.

We had an international crew from the US, the UK, South Africa, and Morocco. We came from different cultures, different races, different faiths, spoke different languages and we made it work to tell an important story about avery difficult subject. Morocco, our host country, is wonderful and beautiful. The Moroccan people are gentle and kind and they welcomed us and protected us. (And they fed us fantastic Moroccan food … I will miss that!!) This has been an experience of a lifetime. As much as I’m ready to come home, it will be difficult to say goodbye. I finish my work on Rendition on Wednesday or Thursday and I leave for my camel trek in the Sahara early Friday morning. I’ll probably be gone (and off line) from March 29 until April 2.  Arlene and I head for Cairo on April 11.  I’m back in Los Angeles April 21 and then I head for Nashville to see family and friends April 25-30 and then I’M HOME. More later….

OK, I’m really sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.  If you notice the “President Palmer” part, you know that this is a scene from the new season of “24“.  People here in LA are talking about it though.  It hits a little close to “home”.  Ever since 9/11 I’ve assumed that LA is a target.  It makes perfect sense.  The ridiculously obscene gluttony of pop culture merged with vapid “stars” like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, is one of the reasons why “they hate us so much”.  It’s not that other countries don’t have similar situations, but LA is the epicenter of it all.  “Everybody comes to Hollywood, they want to make it in the neighborhood…”

Today was actually a very strange day here in LA.  It’s unseasonably cool (Arnold is still directing state agencies to activate extreme temperature protocols, LOL)  When I walked home from lunch the sky was eerily dark in the north but shining bright in the south.  I took these pictures with my cell phone from the top of my street (at 1 PM mind you).  They’re not great, but you kind of get the idea.  The sky looked like it does in the midwest before a huge storm.  Then I heard on the radio that there were “unconfirmed” reports of SNOW on Sunset Blvd. Even though my camera is still broken, I would have bought a new one just to take pictures of that!

Apparently it did snow in Malibu, but I swear the temperature was 20 degrees (F) above freezing, so I can’t imagine it stayed on the ground for more than a few minutes.  Weird though.  We all know the planet’s weather patterns are changing.  If you haven’t seen “An Inconvenient Truth” yet, it really is required viewing.

I’ve got the heat on tonight, and I’m watching a tragic American Idol, while typing this on my laptop. So…maybe it is the “End of the World As We Know It” (but I feel fine)
