  • It’s The End Of The World As We Know It

Today was the hottest day ever recorded (113° F – 45° C) in the history of the city of Los Angeles, and I know why.  Less than 2.5 miles from where I type this, the Devil herself, Sarah Palin, sits in an air conditioned ballroom to watch her evil spawn dance on Dancing With The Stars. (I wasn’t there this time!)  It’s pretty ironic that the moronic Palin doesn’t even believe in climate change.  By the way, for an excellent look at how corporate interests and racist Republican insiders built the teabagging monster, check out Matt Taibbi’s new article:  Tea & Crackers.

Despite the heat, it was a busy week at The Hotel Careyfornia.  We went to our annual viewing of the Singalong Sound of Music Saturday night, and then Seth and I attended a benefit at the Hollywood Tower (inspiration for the Tower of Terror at Disneyland) for an organization called The Next Family, that supports an “ongoing, open-minded and sincere dialog between urbanite families, adoptive families, in vitro parents, interracial families, same sex parents, single parents and so on. It is a way to remind people that the Next Generation of families already exists in larger numbers than the old model of a “family unit”.”  Sunday, Stuart and I attended the wacky West Hollywood Book Fair, and hung out with Molly Ringwald (who looked great!) and Sarah Silverman.  I also lost my phone! :(  Here are some photos from the past week.  Enjoy!

Andy will be 5 next week…hard to believe!  More pics here…

  • Road Rage and Roger Ebert

What follows, are two completely unrelated stories that are ultimately about hope and inspiration:

I would like everyone to grab a box of tissues and read this story.  I want you to think about it the next time you get angry while driving.  I know I will.  I’m an admittedly terrible driver, and have been guilty of road rage many times.  I’ve been working on driving more calmly for several years, but living in Los Angeles, relapses are easy.  I hope that the memory of what happened to this family and their little boy will forever stay with me when I’m behind the wheel. Life is indeed too short.

When a porn star and a college student driving through the San Fernando Valley fell into conflict, a Bangladeshi American family suffered the consequences

    Los Angeles magazine, February 2010

On the Internet you can watch a four-minute video clip of Ayman Arif dancing. The venue is a bedroom in his Northridge home; his stage, a comforter patterned with sunflowers. Taking his cues from a Bollywood spectacular playing on the television, the four-year-old Bangladeshi American boy wriggles, twirls, and bounds. On his bare chest he wears the pink string sash of the Brahman jester he is pretending to be. His mop of brown hair gives way to a wide forehead, and his dark brown eyes are bright with fire as he sings along to the Bengali-language soundtrack. One moment he’s wagging a stern finger, the next he’s clasping his hands to his heart or pumping an outstretched palm toward the heavens.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2007, some ten months after her son’s impromptu performance made it onto YouTube, Syeda Arif was readying her family for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr—three days of gift giving, party hopping, overeating, and prayer to conclude the fast of Ramadan. At 30, Syeda was petite, with almond-shaped eyes and a husky laugh. She and her husband, Amir, lived in a Bangladeshi enclave in the northwest San Fernando Valley. Her father had been twice nominated to the Bangladeshi parliament, and Amir liked to say that she made friends with the ease of a born politician.

Around noon in the gathering heat of the day, Syeda buckled her two-month-old daughter, Ikra, into the car seat in her Honda Civic and drove to the home of Romey Islam, one of her best friends. The Islams lived in a modest gray ranch house on Sherman Way near Van Nuys Airport. Its soundproof front windows looked out onto a six-lane river of crosstown traffic that, like the row of palm trees lining the sidewalk, continued as far as the eye could follow. Read more…

And keeping in the vain of “life’s too short”, here’s another article I highly recommend taking the time to read.  It’s an inspiring look at Roger Ebert, perhaps the best known film critic in America.  Those of you in other countries have probably never heard of him, but I’ve always had a special affinity for Mr. Ebert.  He was a fixture in Chicago where I grew up, and his movie reviews with Gene Siskel and patented “thumbs up or down” are legendary.  Five years ago, when the movie “Rent” came out, I was very excited.  Any regular reader of this space knows that seeing the musical “Rent” in 1996 was a seminal event in my life.  I went on to see the show 15 times in 15 different countries!  While I was a bit underwhelmed by the transition from stage to screen; subsequent viewings of the movie made me appreciate it more.  Upon realizing this, I wrote to Mr. Ebert to take issue with a few of the comments he made in his review of the film.  Imagine my surprise the next day, when I got a personal response from Roger Ebert from his personal email address; and he actually agreed with me!  I thought that was a very classy thing for him to do.  At the time, I had no idea of the huge medical ordeals he was facing.  I read this article last night and it brought tears to my eyes. Roger Ebert is a class act. This is the story of a life well lived and it’s worth your time.

    Roger Ebert: The Essential Man

It has been nearly four years since Roger Ebert lost his lower jaw and his ability to speak. Now television’s most famous movie critic is rarely seen and never heard, but his words have never stopped.  Read more…

It was a very busy weekend at The Hotel Careyfornia, filled with many of my blog’s namesakes, primarily dogs (4), kids (3), and sunsets (2).  Thankfully, there was little mention of Sarah Palin and her redneck teleprompter!  Friday, Seth and Hannah came by with Garbo & Ruby.  On Saturday, David & Rebecca came with the two girls and Chanel the dog (just like last Valentine’s Day, when I went to Gay Traffic School!).  Despite snow in 49 of the 50 United States, it was 75° (24° C) in L.A. and we hiked up to the “new” Hollywood sign.  It’s been covered by conservationists temporarily to prevent land development at one of the last untouched parts of Los Angeles. After a quick trip to Millions of Milkshakes, we headed to The Getty Center for sunset (it’s free after 5:00 on Saturdays!).   We capped the night off celebrating the Lunar New Year with delicious Thai food.  Sunday, Claudio, Ryan, Omar & Chazz came to dance the Valentine’s night away at Avalon.  Tonight, Tyson (who took time out of his busy TV appearance schedule), met me and Chazz for dinner at Hollywood & Highland.  I’m exhausted.  Is it the weekend yet??

Speaking of Chase, people in West Hollywood were chasing rainbows yesterday all over town (how cliche, in a gay city)!  This one was snapped from my rooftop and it ended right at Ryan Seacrest’s office on Sunset Blvd..  Damn that Seacrest.  Does he really need more gold?

It doesn’t storm very often here in Southern California, but when it does, I head to my roof to take photos as the sky is usually beautiful. The first 13 photos in this video and are all from last night between 4:30 and 5 PM. The rest are from other storms we’ve had the past two years.

The rain made for some beautiful skies for Chazz to pose against.  It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas:

Just a quick update with some Thanksgiving photos.  My turkey hat was a big hit!! Happy Thanksgiving!

    A passive aggressive Thanksgiving!

    Best of the rest!

    Giving Thanks for Redneck Philistines:

This week, Americans are preparing to celebrate their Thanksgiving holiday.  This  year, we have much to be thankful for; a new president, a renewed sense of hope for our tattered worldwide reputation and the fact that Sarah Palin’s supporters are as imbecilic and doltish as she is (hopefully ensuring she will never be elected to anything again).

“I don’t know how to figure out which one is the evil twin. Let’s destroy them both!!”

Watching this video is definitely worth 8 minutes of your time.  It shows Caribou Barbie’s redneck fans gathered outside a “Going Rogue” book signing event in Columbus, Ohio.  When they’re presented with basic questions about her policy positions, hilarity ensues.  Some might argue that this phenomenon is not limited to Palin supporters; but after watching it a few times, I’m inclined to disagree (as are my Facebook friends to the right).  Granted, there are idiots on both sides of the aisle; but these right wing, bible thumping nutjobs take philistinism to a completely different stratosphere.  Nice job Ohio:

And to think a year ago today Sarah Palin was pardoning the Alaska Thanksgiving turkey, while behind her, live turkeys were being fed into an apparatus to kill them and bleed them out.  Classy.

On a cheerier note, last Thanksgiving, I was lucky enough to participate in a truly memorable and worthwhile project.  My friend Seth, owner of Garbo & Ruby, wrote a song about peace on earth and shot a cross cultural video (starring me) that you may remember.  Hannah steals the show at about 32 seconds, and I make my first cheesy appearance at 39 seconds.  Take a look, but be warned, the song will stick in your head!

The parts I’m in were filmed on the roof of the Hotel Careyfonia.  Here are some “Behind the Scenes” photos that might just show up on VH-1′s “Behind the Music” someday after I come out of rehab for the 5th time following my meteoric rise to the top of the Hollywood elite.

Anyway, I hope that everyone stateside has a happy Thanksgiving!  Here are a few recent photos that I posted on  Facebook but forgot to post here.  Gobble gobble!

  • Independent Movies, Music & Vibrators

It’s Oscar week here in Hollywood and to kick it off I was invited to a movie premier tonight in Santa Monica of a new independent film called “The Graduates“.  It’s a coming of age comedy about four high school seniors who learn the true meaning of friendship and growing up.  My friend Seth composed 3 original songs for the soundtrack.  Most of the cast attended the screening tonight, and took questions from the audience after the film.  Seth received accolades from the director for his brilliant songwriting that captured the essence of what the film was all about.  Take a listen:

Besides Seth’s music, the soundtrack is chock full of lots of great indie music that I really enjoyed.  If you like music, you might be interested to know that “The Graduates” is the first film in history to give away 1 million free soundtracks.  No strings attached.  To sample the music, go thegraduatesmovie.com/music.  If you like what you hear, click “Buy Now” next to “Both Digital Discs”.  When you check out, enter the code “GOGRADS” and update your cart (you may have to update twice to change the price to free).  Next simply enter the requested info and click “Free Soundtrack and Trailer” under Download your purchases.  If you like what you hear, spread the word.  This is a great way to market the movie as well as Seth’s and other’s music.

    Primo seats

Last week Seth went to another premier of a new online movie called Zombies Inc.  For some reason, that premier was held at The Pleasure Chest, which is an adult store here in West Hollywood.  He called me at 11 PM to ask if I wanted the “gift bag”.  I said of course I did!  This is what it contained:

    I got a t-shirt, hat, a spanking paddle, and….

LOL…don’t ask me what this has to do with zombies…but it was part of the swag!

Another indie movie I saw recently was at Sundance a few weeks ago.  I forgot to blog about it, but it was called Lymelife and starred Alec Baldwin, Timothy Hutton, Cynthia Nixon and the Culkin brothers.  It was a really good movie.  Kind of reminded me of American Beauty in a way.  I have a feeling you’ll be hearing a lot about it this time next year (award season).

Don’t forget that the Independent Spirit Awards are being held this Saturday, the day before the Oscars, in Santa Monica.  My younger brother was here yesterday, so we took the kids and the dogs (I’m still dog-sitting) to Santa Monica and saw where the awards will be held.  It was kind of overcast, so the pictures aren’t great.  It was much prettier last weekend with Claudio & Ryan, but the girls and the dogs had fun!

  • Wireless Blogging, Petting Anderson, Peace Tunes & A Spectacular Sunset

I want to thank Tom & Cathy for a most spectacular gift they gave me that I alluded to last week.    It’s an Eye-Fi wireless SD card.  It saved me so much time last week in San Francisco because the pictures I took automatically went to my Xanga wirelessly (through Picasa which I had synced to a web album) without even having to download from the card!  What a time-saver.  All I needed to be was at least 30 feet from my computer.  As long as my camera was on, the pictures got uploaded instantly and automatically.  Pretty cool!  Thank you both so much.

I saw this picture of Obama yesterday and thought it was really nice.  Did anyone catch the “Puppedential Debate” on The Daily Show the other night?  Anderson Cooper is pretty damn funny.  I met him last year at a book signing and he was really friendly (I didn’t meet his his boyfriend).  If you missed it, check out “The Road to the Doghouse” The last frame is my favorite!  Hilarious.

Also, you may remember my appearance in Seth’s “Peace on Earth” video and benefit song last Thanksgiving.  I promised you guys I would let you know when it was available on iTunes, and now it is.  If you have iTunes installed, you can click here to purchase the song.  Otherwise, just search for “Seth Freeman” from the iTunes Store.  It goes to a good cause!

Finally, here are some photos I took from my roof of the sunset on Monday night.  Peace!

  • Can You See It If You Open Your Heart?

This week, Americans are preparing to celebrate their Thanksgiving holiday.  This year, we have much to be thankful for; a new president, a renewed sense of hope for our tattered worldwide reputation and the fact that Sarah Palin is finally back in her kitchen in Alaska where she belongs.  (Click here for David Letterman’s Top 10 Palin excuses for the unfortunate interview she gave after “pardoning” a Thanksgiving turkey while the guy behind her feeds LIVE turkeys into a GRINDER!)

    In Seth’s own words:

On Thanksgiving 2007, I asked myself for what was I truly thankful. I have many people, experiences, and things to be grateful about in my life, and so I gave a heartfelt thank you to the universe for all of them. Then I closed my eyes and imagined what I would really like to give thanks for, and I had a vision of the world and the human race as it should be, helping each other instead of hindering, loving each other instead of fighting, giving to each other instead of hoarding, and it felt amazing. My whole body and mind relaxed and a smile came to my face. I think I even laughed.

I know that I’m not alone with this experience. I know that there are many people out there doing amazing work every day to make this world the best place it can be. There are countless others who, while they may not outwardly appear to be “peaceniks,” are doing their part in their own way, be it through making contributions to the charity of their choice, performing random acts of kindness, meditation, prayer, or even just taking a breath before they react in anger. Anyhow, in the midst of these thoughts and feelings, a simple song of peace literally fell out of me.

I had a vision that night of people all over the world hearing and singing this song of peace, and this being a small piece of the tipping point where the majority of the population of the world becomes fed up with conflict, hunger, and injustice and finally leaves the governments of the world no choice but to disarm and refocus their efforts on the greater good. Yes, we singer-songwriters are prone to megalomania. :) But no matter what happens, this song will be out there. Even if it changes only one person’s mind, that will be success.

So this year, before another year goes by, I’ve recorded the song with a large group of singers. All the proceeds from the song will go to benefit peace on Earth by way of Peace Partnership International.

Aside from the charitable contributions that people make by buying the song, getting the song into the public consciousness will also have a great positive effect, because these kinds of ideas are infectious. I know I always think twice after reading those “random acts of kindness” bumper stickers ;)

    Peace!
    Seth

  • It’s A New Day

“I” woke up this morning with Garbo on one side of my pillow and Ruby on the top against my head.  LOL.  I wish I could have taken a picture, it was so cute.  Anyway, Seth and Jessica came home today, so I’m sleeping alone again.    I had a good time with the dogs as usual.  Here are a few photos:

They always need a vacation after leaving the Hotel Careyfornia
I taught Garbo & Ruby a new trick this week.  It’s called “Pretend you’ve been shot by Sarah Palin“:

    Please Sarah, don’t shoot!!

What do I look like, a moose??

    Best of the rest…

Lisa thinks I’ve been wasting too much negative energy on Sarah Palin of late, but I respectfully think that we must remain vigilant, so that Governor Avon Lady never gets so close to the presidency again.  Bill Maher really sums up my feelings perfectly here.  “I’m trying not to be mean, but I’m sorry, I can’t…”  It’s worth watching to the end:

If only she went away this easily:

This bit about Prop 8 appeared on the same Bill Maher show, and brings up some good points about the “elephant in the room (Religion…you can’t poke in the naughty place…)” at about 2:35.

So yes, it is a new day…but we still have a ways to go!

  • A Diva in the Pumpkin Patch

It’s hard to get into the Halloween spirit when the temperature outside is 92° F (34° C), but little Hannah made it a little easier.  Even though there are palm trees in the background instead of brightly colored red and yellow leaves, there’s still something autumnal about a kid in a pumpkin patch
