  • A Crude Comparison

    Really Sarah???

Exactly 20 years ago, one of my favorite bands Midnight Oil; played a half hour concert in front of the Exxon building in New York City:

“Performing on a flatbed truck beneath a banner declaring “Midnight Oil makes you dance, Exxon oil makes us sick,” the ever-politicized Australian band delivered an inspired set protesting the Exxon Valdez oil spill.  You can watch the entire 30-minute performance, along with interview footage, here.”  For those who may not remember, the Exxon Valdez dumped some 11 million gallons of oil in six hours, just a few miles from the Alaskan shore. (Had Sarah Palin been there, she would no doubt have seen Russia reflected off its shiny black surface.)  While other causes were initially blamed, the Valdez disaster was primarily caused by Exxon’s cost-cutting negligence in regard to the ship’s radar. Already downgraded in the ’80s, it had eventually broken down entirely, and the company decided to save money by not fixing it.  Fast-forward two decades to the current Gulf oil spill, which had executives from BP, Transocean and Halliburton shifting the blame back and forth during this month’s Senate hearings.  Ironically, Dick Cheney’s Halliburton is intimately involved in both the current spill and our two current wars. Something worth remembering this Memorial Day.  “We’re a small screaming voice,” says Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett toward the documentary’s end. “But we’ll keep speaking. If they don’t listen now, someone will be listening tomorrow.”  We can only hope.”  Source: CS Independent.

    Who’s going to save us?

And 40 years ago, the oil spill that spawned the modern environment movement, happened right here on the coast of Santa Barbara, where we visited this weekend.  As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald:

For it was another undersea oil well that 40 years ago spawned the modern day, highly effective environmental movement on the US West Coast and the core of US government environment protection policy.  Compared with the volume of oil spewing into the Gulf every day, what happened five miles off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, in January 1969, was minuscule. But its aftermath was vast.  An explosion of natural gas at Platform Alpha, operated by the Union Oil company, caused a blowout – releasing an undersea oil gusher. It would be 11 days before the blowout was brought under control. About 3 million gallons of oil escaped, much of into the pristine and ecologically diverse Santa Barbara channel waters, coating the nearby shoreline.

The damage was enormous. About 4000 dead sea birds and large numbers of seals and dolphins fatally poisoned. The oil also killed innumerable fish and ruined kelp beds.  But then something unexpected happened; tens of thousands of people arrived to help with the clean-up. They laid out mountains of straw to soak up the oil, carted away tonnes of contaminated sand and gathered up the dead and injured wildlife. They were of all ages and affiliations, causing then president Richard Nixon to remark: “The Santa Barbara incident has frankly touched the conscience of the American people.”  The Santa Barbara spill fully awakened the West Coast environmental movement and led directly to the declaration of the first Earth Day in November, 1969, the founding of the US Environmental Defence Centre and the first university Environmental Studies Program. Offshore drilling was banned for the next 16 years – until the Reagan administration came to office.  Read more…

It took Santa Barbara decades to recover.  We may not be so lucky this time…and poor BP, just wants their old life back!  Suffice it to say if Sarah Palin ever becomes president, the number of disasters like this would increase ten fold.  Speaking of Santa Barbara, here are my photos from this weekend.

    Best of the rest…

I also almost bought an iPad this weekend, but I decided to wait until they could do this:

I also took Chazz on a photoshoot recently, to showcase the beautiful flowers California constantly has blooming.  Enjoy the show:

  • America’s Prettiest City

It’s called “The City of Big Shoulders“, “The Windy City” and “Second City“, but I simply call Chicago, home.  I’ve always considered it the prettiest city in America. and Google apparently agrees with me; as my blog entry from my last visit home is the #1 Google hit for “Prettiest City in America“.  Unfortunately, even though I could make Chicago the “ugliest” city in America with a few keystrokes; Mayor Daley has yet to pay me for this awesome free advertising!!

It was a whirlwind week.  I flew in Monday, snapping photos from the plane with my fisheye lens.  I took the train into the city in time for the “blue hour” capturing Michigan Avenue in all its tulip decked glory.  Tuesday and Wednesday I attended a business conference at the Hyatt Regency, then spent the night with Mike & Marc in their beautiful new condo across from the Sears Tower and the old Post Office over the Eisenhower Expressway.  Thursday I visited my dear aunt on the North Shore and ate like a king.  My fondest childhood memories are with my Aunty Gee Gee.  Friday I ventured out to the far western suburbs to see my mother and niece.  I also got to meet up with some old friends I haven’t seen in 20 years.  We had a wonderful visit and I flew home last night.  Here are some highlights from my trip to sweet home Chicago.

Come on, oh baby don’t you wanna go
Back to that same old place
    Sweet home Chicago?

  • ‘Twas the Day After Oscar

    Apologies to Clement C. Moore:
(For this year’s poem, as well as last year and the year before!)

    ‘Twas the day after Oscar,
    And all through the “‘wood”.
    Stars were nursing hangovers,
    The best that they could.

    The statues were given,
    The parties were done.
    And Mo’Nique was braiding
    her leg hair for fun
    .

    And poor old James Cameron,
    Though richer than dirt.
    Still lost to his ex-wife,
    Now that’s gotta hurt!

    And there’s Sandy Bullock,
    With Oscar in tow.
    Bet Keanu now feels,
    Blindsided, ya know?

    And faster than Na’vi,
    The celebrities came.

    And fans whistled and shouted,
    And called them by name.

    There’s Clooney and Winslet,
    Matt Damon and Ben.
    And there’s little Precious,
    Making eyes at Sean Penn.

    And poor Tarantino,
    Minus Brad Pitt.
    With his Inglorious Bastards,
In a funk he did sit.

    So here’s to the movies,
    That made lots of money.
      Too bad Alec & Steve,
    Really weren’t all that funny.

So yesterday I walked to the grocery store before leaving for my Oscar party, and they even had a red carpet out. LOL.

    Only in West Hollywood, LOL

Then I swung by the Pacific Design Center to see them setting up for Elton John’s party:

I made it home right before the rain started.  It only rained for about 10 minutes and then the sky was beautiful again.  On the way to my Oscar party, I got stuck in traffic, but enjoyed the sunset.

Stuck in traffic trying to make it in time for Neil Patrik’s awesome opening

I won the pool for the third year in a row! This year the purse was $120! I only missed two categories, and they were both short features. After I got home, Jay and I went to Millions of Milkshakes and walked over to take a look at the Elton John Party. The police made people stay so far away that you couldn’t really see much. One of the paparazzi told us when Kate Winslet came out, but we soon left. When I got home, I walked a block up the street to the Vanity Fair party. It’s right in front of the dog park where I take Chazz. Again, the police were kind of being dicks, so I just snapped a few shots with my little camera and walked home. I got to see Sandra Bullock hold up her Oscar, so I was happy.  Until next year…Happy Oscars!

I bumped into Mr. & Mrs. Samuel L. Jackson on my walk home.

Best of the rest, starring Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Sandra Bullock’s shadow, Katie Perry,
Russel Brand, Rachel McAdams, Jennifer Lopez, Mark Anthony and Gerard Butler.

In case you missed it, Jimmy Kimmel’s latest Oscar night video, “A Meeting of the Handsome Men’s Club” was pretty epic:

  • A New Era Begins – The Color Purple & Fake Abs

I’m out of town on a business trip until March 2nd, but before I left this morning, my new camera was delivered!  My old Canon SD850 has been very very good to me.  It’s been through a lot and still takes great pics (as you can see below) but you may have noticed the big scratch on the lens these past few weeks.  I’ve tried to crop it out of most of the photos, but the camera was on its last leg.  This is my new camera:

Because of the sheer amount of photos I take, (I took over 450,000 with my SD850), I needed a lightweight, powerful pocket camera with a big screen and Canon’s vivid colors.  I chose the brand new Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS.  It’s got a touch screen for all of the controls and some neat features like a fisheye lens setting and a “wink or smile controlled” self timer.  I toll this photo by winking:

Me in my hotel room tonight…first picture with new camera…taken with a fisheye setting and a wink!

We had a great weekend.  Friday night we went to see The Color Purple starring Fantasia.  I wasn’t expecting to like her performance as much as I did, especially in light of all her bad press.  But I must say, she did a great job in the role of Celie.  All of the performances were strong in fact, and we really enjoyed the show.  The Color Purple has always been both Claudio’s and my favorite movie of all time, so I’m glad we got to see it together.

Saturday we took Chazz on a hike and it marked the first time I completed the whole loop of Runyon Canyon.  I was proud of myself, though Claudio & Chazz could run it 3 times over!  It was a gorgeous day:

Later,  we headed downtown to see an art exhibit by Ryan’s best friend, up and coming artist Keasha Mendez (of Tila Tequila fame), who showed off her remarkable art work against the stunning backdrop of downtown Los Angeles at sunset. If anyone is interested in purchasing one of these pieces, let me know, and I’ll get you in touch with Keasha.

One of her paintings is actually called “Claudio’s Abs”.  I wonder if she knew they were fake when she painted them?  It’s amazing what plastic surgeons can do these days!!

Well, the wi-fi connection in this hotel sucks, so I’m going to go read about how to use my new camera.  I may not be able to read your blogs for a while.  I’ll be pretty busy for the next week or so.  Have a good week everyone!

  • Cheesy Food Porn and a Daring Rescue

A week of rare stormy weather was capped off by a beautiful sunny weekend full of friends, flowers and food (porn).  Picasa tells me I took 224 photos this week.  Here are a few of them:

To prove the clouds weren’t Photoshopped, here’s a short video of the last storm

I’ve been dog-sitting for Buster & Roxy all week.  I have them until Thursday, when I leave for the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.  The poor dogs had cabin fever this week with all the rain, but they got cured of that really quickly after seeing this riveting rescue of a dog trapped in the swollen Los Angeles River this week:

The dog’s owners still haven’t been found.  Maybe I should adopt him and get Chazz a playmate?’
This was really quite an amazing thing to watch.  The poor dog was so scared and the firefighter was so brave.

  • When Eli Met Elvis

My friend An and his wife and 16 month old baby Eli, visited The Hotel Careyfornia this past weekend, and needless to say, I couldn’t take enough photos of this adorable little munchkin:

The last time I saw An was at his wedding a long time ago, as this photo will attest:

We went to Palms Thai and Eli got to meet Thai Elvis and woo a little girl:

    He’s been singing since 1957!

I think Eli better get used to this reaction from girls!

The rest of the weekend consisted of a Golden Globes party (I won the pool again) and Din Tai Fung (again) and Avatar (again) with Kazaf.  It seems I’m a creature of habit.

I told his parents that it would be tantamount to child abuse if they didn’t leave him in Hollywood with me.  Think of how famous I could make him!!

I dare you not to say “Awwwwww”!

    Thanks Pedro and Jose!  LOL

  • Pink Christmas Trees and Sunroof Sunsets

It was a busy weekend at The Hotel Careyfornia.  Since Ryan and Chazz are out of town, Claudio and I decided to spend some “quality time” together.  It rained all day Saturday though, and the traffic was a nightmare.  No one knows what to do in L.A. when it rains, as witnessed by this truck that got stuck in my driveway yesterday morning.  So we just ordered Chinese food and watched movies all night.  It was nice.  Today was beautiful, and after an alleged Lady Gaga sighting, we walked to Tender Greens for lunch and then I drove down to my aunt’s for our pre-Christmas spaghetti dinner.  ‘Tis the season!

Andy entertained us with some Christmas Carols…which you can hear better after Grandma stops talking about her pills!  LOL

    Lunch on Santa Monica Blvd.

I sent this to Wendy Williams, as she likes pink Christmas trees.  Maybe she’ll show it on TV tomorrow?

A day later, they sent this message.  Not a great way to start a business relationship Chase!!  FIGURE IT OUT!!  You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry!

Speaking of Chase, people in West Hollywood were chasing rainbows yesterday all over town (how cliche, in a gay city)!  This one was snapped from my rooftop and it ended right at Ryan Seacrest’s office on Sunset Blvd..  Damn that Seacrest.  Does he really need more gold?

It doesn’t storm very often here in Southern California, but when it does, I head to my roof to take photos as the sky is usually beautiful. The first 13 photos in this video and are all from last night between 4:30 and 5 PM. The rest are from other storms we’ve had the past two years.

The rain made for some beautiful skies for Chazz to pose against.  It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas:

    Greetings, amigos!

Today, September 2nd, is Claudio’s birthday, as I am sure many of you know.  I wanted to get more ideas about his new professorial life and, bingo, found some delightful quotes at RatemyProfessor.com.  Here are some highlights, in my view…

“He is very knowledgeable in the subject matter, and even if he is sometimes slightly unclear with his initial explanations,…”

“His accent can be amusing at times, but in a good way. He is perfectly comprehensible.”

“Dr. P. is a world class professor.”

“One of the best professor [sic] I have ever taken in my life.” (lovely insinuating were it not for the obvious sign of poor grammar…my favorite quote in the group)

“This man is helpful, knowledgable [sic] and is willing to help you in whatever way possible.” (Do tell, Dr. World Class!)

“He really knows what he is talking about,…” (Ha!  This one had me rolling on the ground)

Happy birthday to you, old friend!

I am looking forward to seeing you all in a few days!  Luisao, any chance you can plan a last minute trip to SoCal this weekend?!  Claudao, nao se preocupe que vamos falar mal de voce esse final de semana, com aquele carinho de sempre.

    Abracos,
    m

Many of you don’t remember that back in the early 90′s, before the Internet or ratemyprofessor.com, I used to collect Claudio’s evaluations from when he was a T.A at University of Illinois, because he spent summers in Brazil.  My all time favorite went something like this:
Q:  Did you learn a lot in Professor P’s class?
A:  I didn’t learn a thing.  I was too busy looking at his dreamy eyes!
15 years later, the eyes are more cloudy than dreamy and we won’t talk about the hair…
    Feliz Anniversario my friend!!

    Claudio & Oreo circa 1990

It’s amazing what 20 years can do!

I was looking through my old diaries last night, and found this and sent it to Claudio.  He wrote this in my calendar in 1991:  “Birthday of the nicest Brazilian ever”.  I’m sure Marcelo might have something to say about that my dear!

    His reply:

    THANK YOU!!!!

Ugh!  You want to talk about hair!!??  Be careful darling.  It may be YOUR birthday, but my old calendars hold lots of other secrets as well.  Feliz Anniversario

The weather finally broke today.  It was a little cooler with a touch of humidity in the air.  We needed a break!  Saturday it was 105° F (41° C) when Lisa & the kids and I took Aunty Lulu & Uncle George out for ice cream:

The fires did make for amazing sunsets all last week:

Whenever I need to smile I’ll just look at this picture of Buster!

Joel and I went to see District 9 over the weekend and we both enjoyed the movie.  It was about 1/2 hour too long, but entertaining.  Kind of a cross between Close Encounters and The Fly!  There were a lot of blatant racial parallels that I won’t go into now.  As someone who has been to Johannesburg though, it was a sadly appropriate setting for that movie.

I’m SO excited for this show to start next week!!

Dinner last night before I headed back to LA for the first time in 9 days.

Click for best of the rest…

The fires are far enough away that my home isn’t in any danger, but they’re still too close for comfort:

On the way home last night this is what I saw from the car.  I’m surprised there weren’t more accidents on the freeway from people looking.  It was an amazing sight to see:

The air today was an eerie, quiet yellow making the sky look like Dijon mustard.  About 6:00 tonight I went up to my roof and shot this photo.

After taking this, I went back inside with my mask!

Here’s a good time lapse video of the fire.  The smoke clouds are amazing as these LA Times photos show:

And finally, I got some very sad news today from Margie:

    Subject: Daisy

I had to have Daisy put down today.  I am very sad.  She fell off the bed & broke whatever was misplaced in her back.  When I picked her up she immediately lost her bowels & her head started rolling to the side.  When I took her outside she tried to stand but could not.  Later I will pick her up – couldn’t bear to be with her when they put her down – and bury her on the farm.  Can’t stop crying every time I think about it, so I’m going to try not to think about it.

Daisy, if you remember, spent a month here with me last spring.  In fact I recently posted this video of her getting harassed by Chazz.  I know how terribly painful it is to lose a treasured friend.  We’ll miss you lazy Daisy!!

I’ve got a bunch of good friends flying in for the weekend starting Thursday.  It’s going to be non stop.  We’re going to the Hollywood Bowl for my 44th birthday Sunday.  I’ll try to post as I have time.  Have a good week everyone!

  • Species Change Operation

Chazz hasn’t been sleeping well the past few nights.  When I asked him what was wrong, he finally admitted that he’s been a little freaked out by the recent news that Cher’s daughter, Chastity Bono is undergoing a sex change operation to become Chaz Bono.  I tried to explain to him that he is Chazz with two Z’s and that no one could ever take that away from him.  Still, his melancholy persists; to the point where I’ve had to go public just like Cher did to People magazine:

    To which I replied:

It’s kind of funny that Chastity might actually be the lucky one if such an operation were possible!  I’m just sayin’.  In the meantime, Chazz’s summer vacation has come to and end.  I’d say it was a pretty successful month.  He met Drew Barrymore and President Obama.  He hob knobbed with Chelsea Handler and learned to solve the Rubik’s Cube.  He even celebrated Christmas in June and discovered he was as thin as a shih tzu!  And tonight at the dog park he was approached by a talent scout who gave me a card for a free screen test.  LOL

I didn’t tell the gal that Chazz was already very close with Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black,
what with the sex scandal and all!
    (Don’t click with kids around.)

Claudio & Ryan come back from Brazil tonight; we’re picking them up at the airport midnight.  It will be lonely around here without Chazz, but starting next weekend, I’m dog-sitting for Garbo & Ruby, so I won’t be sleeping alone long!  Here are the final photos from Chazz’s summer break.  We had a great time at the beach this weekend with Paul & Emili and a lot of fun at the dog park with Sophie!

A full moon at the dog park, and the dogs were howling!

Paul & Emili playing in the surf!

We went to see “The Proposal” at the Arclight.
