    Hello friends!!

In case you guys have no idea what to do the first weekend in July (yes, I realize that Carey might actually be the only person to think so far ahead but I am still giving it a try), I have an idea what you could do:

Alan and I always talked about having a wedding party later on and this is what is going to happen. A friend of mine has a house in Tuscany, which we can use. So in case you want to join us for this event (3/4/5th of July) then you all are more than welcome.  Massi told me that the house is 50 min. away by train from Rome. The house has 5 bedrooms one bathroom (there is always the sea) and lots of floors. Massi also told me that there should be more or less cheap accommodation close by. So, as soon as you have any idea if you can make it, let us know.

Please remember: We expect a significant amount of people to be there during the weekend, so please bring sleeping bags and sleeping mats as we are for sure going to run out of beds or just don’t sleep, which might be an option, too. Everybody arriving from Europe: If you can bring a tent, too!

Looking forward to seeing you guys in Bella Italia!

    Bine & Alan

Here’s where we’ll be staying.  I’m not sure where we’re all going to sleep.  About 25 have already RSVP’d!!  Hooray for Frequent Flyer Miles!

And from the “Only in West Hollywood” Department, comes this story:

West Hollywood, California (January 19, 2009) – West Hollywood firemen doused an apartment fire that destroyed one unit and made five others unlivable Sunday, reviving two lifeless pets in the aftermath.

A plugged in laptop left on a carpet while the tenant walked her dog exploded into flames at 1169 Orange Grove Avenue in WeHo around 5:00 pm Sunday evening, said Station 7 Captain Ric Brandelli.  He told WeHo News that his men located a yellow lab and black tabby on their secondary search of the premises, both apparently overcome with smoke inhalation.

After removing the pair to the street, paramedics began what seemed, initially, to be futile efforts to revive them.  “We worked on them for quite a while, and it didn’t look like they would make it” said Capt. Brandelli, “and then the cat began breathing on its own and ran away.”

He said his cohort turned its attentions to the dog, a 16-yr old, again with no results to show for precious minutes. Then, to everyone’s relief, “the dog started breathing on its own and stood up to walk around,” he said.  The cat and dog resided with the woman whose laptop began the conflagration.  Capt. Brandelli said that she was not present for the cat’s resuscitation, but witnessed the dog’s.

“No words can describe the relief in the lady’s expression,” he said. As a pet guardian and animal lover himself, (see Firemen Of The Sunset Strip 2009 Calendar Benefits Animal Rescue – Monday, December 22, 2008 for more) he said he and his fellows got a special thrill out of the experience.  “We were all relieved and glad,” he said. He reported no other injuries.  Read more…

Yep, the fireman from the “Firemen Of The Sunset Strip 2009 Calendar Benefits Animal Rescue actually rescued the dog & cat!  LOL

  • The Dog Ate My Homework…

David & Hyun Ju arrived at the Hotel Careyfornia on Tuesday by way of Germany.  Hyun Ju had actually flown from Korea to Germany and then they flew to Los Angeles together from Hamburg.  When they arrived, they were hungry so we decided to walk down the street to the local sushi bar on the corner.  I had taken Chazz to the dog park for about 2 hours to make sure he was tired and that he would just sleep while we were gone for an hour.  Unfortunately though, before David & Hyun Ju arrived, I had picked up all of Chazz’s toys and put them in his little toy box.  I don’t know if he just forgot where his toybox was, or if he was just pissed that two new people came to the house and I left with them…but this was the scene I returned to:

In one hour managed to eat 3 books, my new slippers, a pair of tennis shoes and he grabbed a can of air freshener from the bathroom.

But here’s the unbelievable part.  These are two of the books he grabbed from the bottom of the bookshelf:

I couldn’t make this up if I tried….I have two witnesses!

He definitely knew he had done something wrong:

    Guilty!

Upon further examination, we couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw some of the pages that he had torn out:

He seemed to focus on the chapter on “Animal Feelings”

    Talk about puppy dog eyes!

Admittedly I staged this photo, but he really tore out the page on Animal Aggression!

So the dog has to be a genius right?  I mean, how could I be mad at him??  Claudio and Ryan came back last night and took him back to Oxnard, and I already miss the little shit.  Puppies are amazing for your social life.  I’ve met more people in my neighborhood at the dog park in the past week, than I have the prior six years of living here!  I dog sit all the time, for Garbo, Ruby, Buster, Roxy, Roscoe, etc…but there’s something about a puppy.  And after what Chazz just did, he’s definitely all puppy!

Last night we had dinner on Sunset and took Chazz with us.  I guess he got what he wanted.  He even got a trip to Pinkberry afterwards where I practiced keeping him off leash while we were inside.  He did so well, though he did manage to slip into Pinkberry a few times!

  • Golden Retrievers, Globes & Labs (Plus a Drumdog and an Elephant!)

It’s a big day here in Hollywood, as the Golden Globes start in about 3 hours.  Santa Monica Blvd. is jammed with limos already.  To celebrate, I took Chazz to the dog park where he met what could have been the Golden Globes mascot, a Golden Retriever mix named Brockton. (Here’s a video of them playing if you’re interested.)  Yesterday, he had a playdate with his friend Weho, and also met one of the stand-ins from Marley & Me!

    Got him!

    Can’t we play some more??

    Best of the rest…

Tonight we’re heading to Seth & Jessica’s to watch the awards.  Most of the parties are at the Beverly Hilton and it’s hard to get to, so I doubt I’ll get any pictures tonight after the ceremony.  Here are my predictions:

UPDATE:  I got 17 out of 21 predictions right!

Not Shown:  Best Supporting Actor/Actress: Heath Ledger & Kate Winslet

My favorite film of the year is still Slumdog Millionaire, though “Drumdog Millionaire” ain’t bad either:

Finally, thanks to Hoa for posting this touching video of a friendship between a dog and an elephant!

This post is dedicated to Tasha.  Hang in there old girl!

  • Carey’s Hollywood Roundup & Canine Cajones

Oscar season is in full swing and we saw 7 movies this week!  (Today was a triple feature.  We walked to The Grove (to avoid parking fees for 7 hours) and saw three in a row!  Haven’t done that in a long time, but it was fun.)  Slumdog Millionaire is still my favorite of the year, but here’s a roundup of this week’s films.  I still have to see Gran Torino & Revolutionary Road.

Speaking of Marley & Me, the best scene in the film was when Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson were taking Marley to be neutered.  He jumped halfway out of the car window and walked on his two front legs as the car drove down a busy street.  Coincidentally, we got Chazz neutered on Friday.  He was too small to reenact that scene from the movie, so this is the best I could do:

Chazz came through the operation like a trooper.  And no, we didn’t get him Neuticles!!  What are Neuticles you ask??

Neuticles” are fake testicles for dogs.  I love this quote from their website:

Neuticles allow your pet to retain his natural look, self esteem and aid in the trauma associated with neutering.

With Neuticles – It’s like nothing ever changed!

    neuticles

I wonder how many Beverly Hills pooches actually have these?  LOL  Anyway, here are some photos of Chazz’s recovery and the rest of our holiday weekend!

  • Bachelor Blues & Puppy Love

As a single guy who lives alone, I go out to eat a lot because I don’t really like cooking for just myself.  When I do buy things to eat here, they often go bad and sit in my refrigerator or cupboard for months….sometimes years.  The other morning Ryan made some pancakes and wondered why they didn’t taste as good as normal.  When he looked at the box of pancake mix, he saw that it had expired over 2 years ago.  The same thing happened all weekend; with salad dressing, olive oil, vinegar, jam, mayonnaise and more.  ALL expired; some much more than two years ago.  My standard response every time they asked how old something was:

    “____________ never goes bad!”

Apparently pancake mix does.  Oh, and fresh eggs aren’t so fresh in December if you bought them before Halloween.  Who knew?  (In my defense I didn’t even know they were back there! LOL)  So last night we ordered Thai food from Sunset Thai.  I had an old takeout menu of theirs from 2002.  When they delivered the food, the bill was $60 for the three of us, which I was sure was a mistake.  Apparently though, the prices at Sunset Thai have gone bad too:

    A 92% price rise in 6 years?

We also went to see Frost/Nixon at The Grove.  The performances were good, but I thought the movie took too much dramatic license with the fact.  As the grandson of a History, English & Latin teacher (who sat me down to watch when Nixon resigned), I felt the movie treated Nixon a bit too sympathetically and messed with the actual interview facts too much.  If you’re interested; this article by Elizabeth Drew sums it up pretty well.

As promised here are the rest of the Chazz pictures from our Christmas tree trimming extravaganza and his first trip to the dog park:

On his first trip to the dog park, he met his new best friend, Weho (short for West Hollywood!)

After playing with Weho (as shown in the video above), he was pooped!

    ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
“Everyone is in the holiday spirit [in New York]. Coming to work today, I saw two strangers sharing a cab. One took the tires, one took the radio.” — David Letterman

  • I’m An Uncle

When Claudio & Ryan moved here last summer and bought a big house with a big yard, I encouraged them to get a dog.  They weren’t sure at first, because they wanted to be able to travel unimpeded.  I assured them however, that I would take care of the dog whenever and for however long they needed me to.  I mentioned the idea again a few weeks ago, and one thing led to another.  Since Ryan’s birthday and Christmas were coming up, Claudio and I secretly strategized, and earlier this week, a puppy was sent into the front door of their house (as a surprise) with a big bow around his neck.  Meet my new nephew, Chazz!

Vicious Disclaimer, I know!  Sorry Ryan!

Rest assured you will be seeing many more pictures of this dog on this blog in the years to come.  I sent Claudio & Ryan this email the other day.  (Warning, it’s not for the faint of heart!)

    oh i am speechless.

Lil Chazz was in my lab watching as well, I had to cover his gorgeous eyes and earmuff that clip.
I’m now going to have to put a parental lock on youtube so I can filter what the new love of my life is being exposed to.

P.S. Cougars (i.e. Claudio) and puppies don’t mix – I’m AFRAID to let little Chazz out of my site.  What if he tries to steal a lick or two from ‘ol coug’s saucer of milk?? He could be lunch! Oh the worries and woes of parenting!!!

Finally, you may have seen this heartbreaking storty of the “hero” dog from Santiago, Chile all over the news today.  Oreo, would have been proud!!

  • Best in Show & Best Shows

Yesterday I took Roscoe to Runyon Canyon and he had a blast.  It was a picture perfect sunset.  Doesn’t he look handsome?

Later that evening, Claudio & Ryan drove down and we went to see “Milk” and then had dinner.  The reviews are right, it was really well done and we all enjoyed it.  This review from slate.com, particularly resonated:

Few reviewers will miss the opportunity to point out—the parallels are hard to ignore—that Harvey Milk was the Barack Obama of his day, a minority candidate who represented change, opposed the party machine, and preached a gospel of hope. Milk’s stump speech was dubbed the Hope Speech, and the last line of his recorded will, which also closes the film, was: “You gotta give them hope.” Milk was also, in essence, a community organizer, a grassroots populist with a gift for reaching out across San Francisco’s patchwork of minorities. After Prop 8 passed, some gay activists were all too eager to blame blacks and Latinos (two groups in which majorities voted “yes”) and to define the problem along racial lines. Milk’s impassioned rhetoric of inclusivity—he called his hodgepodge coalition, which ran from Asians to seniors to blacks to labor unions, “the us-es”—is helpful to keep in mind in light of the recent finger-pointing.
Viewed in a post-Prop 8 environment, Milk might well suggest strategies for the culture wars to come. But had it appeared earlier, could this particular battle have been won? While it’s naive to presume that movies can swing electorates—just ask Michael Moore—those what-if questions are hard to dismiss, not least for the filmmakers. Interviewed by the San Francisco Bay Guardian recently, Van Sant conceded, “Harvey would have opened it in October.”
That the question of timing and impact is being raised says something about where Milk falls on the spectrum of gay cinema. In one sense, it belongs with the AIDS melodrama Philadelphia and the closet weepie Brokeback Mountain in the relatively small group of serious gay-themed Hollywood movies that, partly because of their scarcity, still exist as consciousness-raising vehicles or as markers of social progress. (Milk is all but guaranteed a good night at the Oscars, given that many members of the Academy are likely to see a vote for Milk as a vote against Prop 8, not to mention a way to make up for giving the Oscar that was thought a lock for Brokeback Mountain, also a Focus release, to the odious Crash.)  Read more…

So Milk and Slumdog Millionaire are clearly my two early Oscar favorites.  Apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks so.  This chart from the LA Times compiles several critics early pics.  Slumdog is the one consistent Best Picture pick across the board.

“Slumdog Millionaire” is truly the top dog in our latest round of Oscar pundits’ predix. It’s the only contender in the best picture race that gets a vote from all six of us pundits, who include Anthony Breznican (USA Today), Edward Douglas (ComingSoon.net), Peter Howell (Toronto Star), Steve Pond, author, “The Big Show“) and Kris Tapley (InContention.com).

  • Front Page Pooch & A Tangled Web

When I saw this story on CNN today,

…it brought back memories of what happened to my dog Oreo, over 20 years ago, when he walked 45 miles and ended up on the front page of the Chicago Tribune!

In August of 1987, Oreo and I moved to Chicago, which was 200 miles north of where I went to college.  The very first Friday night we lived in our new house, Oreo somehow
pawed the door open in the middle of the night and ran out to play with
another dog. I vaguely remember hearing him leave, but was too tired to get up.
After all, Oreo ALWAYS came back home. He was the dog who went to every class in college with me and waited outside every building.  He had never been on a leash.  What I forgot however, was that
there had been a major flood in Chicago that week. Oreo was in new
surroundings and couldn’t find his scent back to our new house. He knew
that home was “south” so he started walking. By noon that day (roughly
8 hours), Oreo had walked 45 miles to Oakbrook, Illinois. He stopped
off at the Western Open Golf Tournament, where a Chicago Tribune
photographer snapped this photo, which appeared on the front page of
the paper’s Sports section that Sunday. Seeing this unfold, a woman named Lola Proulx (who I am friends with to this day), bought 8 hot dogs and earned Oreo’s
trust by feeding him. She was able to get him to the Humane Society,
and they traced his tags back to our former home, where I had already
called with my new contact information. I went to pick Oreo up the
following Monday, 60 miles south of where he first started his journey.
From that day forward he was scared to death of trains, which led me to
believe he had a very close call with a train on his journey south. He
went on to live 9 more wonderful years, and even survived an
assassination attempt by a local campus keystone cop, and a close call
with a herd of massive elk. He appeared on the second season of
Friends, and made other front page headlines throughout his 12 year
storied life. He traveled with me through 30 of the 50 states, and was a friend to everyone who met him!  All of these are stories for another entry though.  I’ll write one soon.  My cousin Lisa even named her dog after Oreo!

Speaking of Lisa, take a look at this outfit she bought Tommy & Andy for Halloween!  Sadly, they didn’t like it, so she returned it.  I still don’t have a costume for next week.  Any ideas??

I went to their house for dinner tonight.  They had the yard all decorated for Halloween!

    Boo!

  • Sick as a Dog

I finally went to the doctor and got some antibiotics for this upper respiratory infection.  Hopefully they will start working soon.  In the meantime, I’m just resting and taking it easy.  On the way to pick up my prescription today I met a chihuahua named “Beast”. LOL, he was a far cry from the Beast I first wrote about in my very first blog entry ever.   He was a real gentle giant:

  • You Can’t Photograph That!!

When Amos and I were told we could not take photographs on “private property” at the Pacific Design Center the other night; the more I thought about it, the angrier I became.  So I did a little research, and as it turns out, I’m not the only one who’s angry or confused.  And even after reading all of this information, I’m still not clear as to whether I have a right to photograph Garbo & Ruby at the Pacific Design Center, or the lawn of Beverly Hills City Hall (another place I was kicked out of by the police for taking pictures without a permit a few years ago.  If you really want to be shocked, take a look at what the city charges for a permit!!), or the subway, or the Port of Los Angeles.  If anyone is interested in reading up on this, here are a few links:

Yet, according to this article in USA Today, “You can take photos any place that’s open to the public, whether or not
it’s private property. A mall, for example, is open to the public. So
are most office buildings (at least the lobbies). You don’t need
permission; if you have permission to enter, you have permission to
    shoot.”

Amos isn’t even allowed to bring his zoom lens to sporting events!  So, if he wanted to get a closeup of David Beckham’s package like this:

He’s have to work for Getty Images!!  (Or Armani:)

Gratuitous Beckham shot that has nothing to do with this post.

So which is it?  Can I photograph the dogs at the PDC or not?  It seems that in just the past week I’ve broken many laws, like:

Photographing the elevated train tracks in Chicago.  Is that REALLY an iPod ad??

Photographing the Port of Los Angeles from the air.  Is that a nuclear submarine??

Fraternizing with known drug users!  (I didn’t inhale during this photo.)

If I don’t blog tomorrow, you’ll know the FBI arrested me, and whisked me off to Guantanamo.  (I hope I can share a cell with Harold & Kumar!).  Do you think Guantanamo has wi-fi?  Before I go however, I’m going to post these illegal photos that Amos took with his penis envy lens.

Even though that’s my watermark, Amos actually took these, and gets full credit.

The watermark goes on automatically when I shrink these for the blog.  The actual photos were about 9 MB each as .jpgs and even bigger in RAW format, but they look amazing.  It’s hard to tell when they’re this small.

Another illegal photograph I took at the PDC in February, of Roscoe.

I’ll end with this photo I secretly took today from my balcony (is that illegal??).  This guy was walking his dog in my front yard, and the dog has a TATTOO!!!!  If you look closely you’ll see a red heart on the dog’s hip.  I’ve heard of tattoos of dogs, but tattoos ON dogs??  I swear, only in LA.  LOL
