  • Good News Bad News

I’m pleased to inform you that the reports of the Easter Bunny’s death, have been greatly exaggerated:

Sorry…my camera is missing about 5 screws (just like the middle of this photo), and light is leaking in!  I’m getting it repaired this week!

    Best of the rest…

Unfortunately though, reports of another hare brained mass breeder’s career death are also premature:

Don’t worry.  I’ll keep doing my small part, even though I know it annoys some of you, who wish we could all just get along…like this:

  • So Long Pepsi Ted!

    Chicago, IL
     - 19°F  -7°C
    Current: Light Snow
    Wind: NE at 6 mph
    Humidity: 62%

    16°F

It was 84° F (29° C) here today which is a far cry from the weather back home in the Midwest.  My Dad is on his way to Michigan via Chicago, weather permitting, to attend a funeral.  Sadly, 2 days ago his twin sister’s boyfriend Ted was plowing several neighbor’s driveways out from a huge winter storm and dropped dead of a heart attack.  Ted was a very kind man and treated my aunt so nicely.  He worked for the Pepsi company for most of his life.  They called him Pepsi Ted.  He died doing what he did best, helping other people.  He will be missed.  Here’s a photo of him from 4 years ago when he visited me in Hollywood.  He had never been out of Michigan, and they came the day before the Oscars.  We walked the red carpet and they even got to see some celebrities.  (Joan Rivers was one of them if I remember correctly, LOL.)

When Dad gets to the Iron Mountain, he’ll have this to contend with.  This is the front of Steve & MaryLou’s house today!!

Our weather on the other hand was so beautiful that Andy and I took a “nature hike”.  Here’s a photo Lisa took of us “on the trail” from up above at the house:

That’s me and Andy in the center with the dogs!

And finally, even Democrats can be cool behind the Orange Curtain apparently!  I saw this on Jennifer’s Facebook page and it made me laugh out loud:

  • A Post Oprahlyptic World

I had to go to San Diego for a meeting yesterday.  Got to see a bunch of old friends & colleagues, and it was a picture perfect day.  Parvesh and I had lunch at the Del Coronado, and it was just as gorgeous as when Vivek and I were there last summer.  Such a pretty place!  Afterwards, I drove up to meet my cousins for dinner.

    Boo yah!

    Chocolate chip faced Andy

It was a long day, but a good one!  Certainly better than any day in an Oprah-less world!

  • The Dawn of a New Age – The Reign of Error is Over

In 12 hours, our long national nightmare will be over and America will begin a healing process that will hopefully restore our tattered reputation around the world

    Smart People Rule

The forty-fourth presidential inauguration will herald a new era for intellect in the United States. No longer will conjecture and gut instincts substitute for empiricism and analysis. In front of millions around the world, science will be given new breadth, non-believers will be put on equal footing with the faithful and education will be promised true reform.

We started celebrating last Thursday when my mostly Republican family was nice enough to indulge me with a “George Bush is Outta Here” party.  We had hats, plates, cups, a tablecloth and a “To Do” list for our ex Asshole in Chief that included completed items like:
    • Squander the goodwill, love and sympathy of the world by utilizing a misguided, arrogant foreign policy to ensure that the U.S. goes from being one of the most beloved countries in the world, to the most despised country in the world all by the time September 11, 2002 rolled around.

Thank God for the 22nd Amendment!

We even played “Pin the Tail on the Ass’s Ass” with a “Mission Accomplished” tail on Dick Cheney protruding from W’s ignorant ass!  Luckily the kids didn’t read the poster!

    Mission not quite accomplished

Even Betsy was celebrating earlier tonight

President Bush and his friends celebrated the end of his term with a party of their own at Glen Echo Park. Slate went, for some reason, and their account makes the whole thing sound like the most depressing event in the world. The party, dubbed “Crossing the Finish Line” and held in the park’s giant Spanish Ballroom, was organized by outgoing White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and his predecessor, Andy Card.

The venue had been somewhat controversial, according to attendees. There was no heating, so a lot of bodies were needed. “Due to the historic nature of the venue, there are limitations on what can be done in terms of climate control,” the hosts warned in an email. “DO: Wear layers and coats. DON’T: Dress like you’re going to Gold Cup or Smith Point.”

Apparently some of the more climate-controlled venues had been taken. “There weren’t a lot [of places] available,” said Card. “There weren’t a lot of bands available, either.”

So, basically, everyone was rubbing against each other for warmth and totally unemployed. Just contemplate the multitudes that are contained in this single depressing sentence: “One outgoing Treasury employee had already landed a job as a manager at Abercrombie & Fitch.” The Great Gatsby could have ended with that line.

Anyway, there they all mingled, freezing their asses off, as Karl Rove talked about Twitter, Alberto Gonzalez walked around with a bloodshot eye, and the president mangled some more grammar.

Look, people, if you are out the next two days, and you see these mopes walking all despondent down the street, for God’s sake, take them out a plate of canapes or something and call it national service. Then wish them luck at their new jobs, folding on, sweaters against the sale rack, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

  • Plunging Into Christmas With Boys & Their Toys

The other night we decided to take the boys to the Irvine Spectrum to go ice skating.  It’s weird to go Christmas shopping when it’s 80° and the palm trees are decorated, so ice skating seemed like just the thing to make it feel like Christmas.  Unfortunately though, the ice skating rink was closed for a private party.  So we just had dinner and took some photos of the lights.  Andy however, wanted more.  If he wasn’t going to get to ice skate, he was going to do the next best thing:

    Andy, enjoying the fountain…

Looks innocent enough, right?  But notice the twinkle in his eye.  Something is going on inside that head, behind those deceptively cute eyes.  Five seconds after I took this picture….

he started to lean forward….pondering how good the water looked,  And suddenly….

He jumped full force into the fountain.  I think he thought is was the 4th of July again….not Christmas!  He landed on his feet, so I quickly set my camera down and reached in to grab him.  At that point he fell backwards, completely under water.  For a second I thought I’d have to go in, but I grabbed on to him, and a stranger also came to help grab him.  His mother, father and brother who were on the other side of the fountain watching, ran over too.  Lisa said she knew he was going to jump right before it happened.  Looking at the photos now, you can almost see him thinking about it.  He’s 4 years old, and I have a feeling he will remember this for the rest of his life!

After the dip…walking back to the car….soaked, but happy!

Tommy took it all in stride with a little yoga!

Before the dip, we met a Great Dane

    What a look!

    Nice and dry

    Thinking of things to come…

    No ice skating tonight

The Tale of Colin’s Christmas present…

A few weeks ago I met up with stevew918 because I knew he was going to Hong Kong this week, and I wanted him to deliver some Christmas presents to my little buddy Colin.  You see, Colin is a very special little boy who loves motorcycles and Spiderman.  So that’s what I got him!  Thanks for the special delivery Steve, and for sending the pictures and video!  And thank you Colin for never failing to make me smile.  You are a light in my life, and though you’re halfway around the world, your joy and love knows no borders.  Merry Christmas!

Carey,  I met the wonder boy Colin and his beautiful family yesterday afternoon.  Colin, his mom, his dad and mommy mom, and I had tea lunch.   Colin really enjoyed the Spiderman toys.  You surely know kids,  hehe.  He said thanks to Uncle Carey several times, he is so very cute.  I was melting, lol.  Attached is a picture and video for your enjoyment.  Btw, Colin’s Mom got us each a nice box of chocolate, we need to meet up so I can give it to you.  Carey, Colin knows many English words already, you need to start learning some Cantonese chinese, hehe.
Thanks, and hope we will meet again,
    Steve

Xanga cut off the end of this video, but he says “Thank you Uncle Carey”.  Steve also posted another video here.

Here’s Colin last Christmas singing Jingle Bells!

    Merry Christmas Colin!! xoxo

  • Turkey & Opie

Last night we went to see Slumdog Millionaire at the Arclight.  We were sitting behind Ron Howard (Opie), and the theater was packed.  I like seeing movies at the Arclight (despite the $15 ticket price), because it caters to an industry crowd that really appreciates good film making.  When the movie was over it got a standing ovation, and then someone suggested a minute of silence for the victims of the terrorist attacks in India.  Since the movie was set in Mumbai, it was an appropriate gesture and quite touching.  This was honestly the best movie I’ve seen all year.  (We’re going to see “Milk” tomorrow though, which also got a 93 on Rotten Tomatoes.  I’ve heard excellent things about it too, and it’s obviously another timely topic in light of what’s going on with Prop. 8.)  Seriously though, go see Slumdog Millionaire.  If you don’t like it, I will pay you double!!  Honest   The world needs a movie like this right now.  It’s amazing.

I hope all you statesiders had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Here are some pictures from feast.  I’m going to slip into a turkey coma now.  Good night!

  • Front Page Pooch & A Tangled Web

When I saw this story on CNN today,

…it brought back memories of what happened to my dog Oreo, over 20 years ago, when he walked 45 miles and ended up on the front page of the Chicago Tribune!

In August of 1987, Oreo and I moved to Chicago, which was 200 miles north of where I went to college.  The very first Friday night we lived in our new house, Oreo somehow
pawed the door open in the middle of the night and ran out to play with
another dog. I vaguely remember hearing him leave, but was too tired to get up.
After all, Oreo ALWAYS came back home. He was the dog who went to every class in college with me and waited outside every building.  He had never been on a leash.  What I forgot however, was that
there had been a major flood in Chicago that week. Oreo was in new
surroundings and couldn’t find his scent back to our new house. He knew
that home was “south” so he started walking. By noon that day (roughly
8 hours), Oreo had walked 45 miles to Oakbrook, Illinois. He stopped
off at the Western Open Golf Tournament, where a Chicago Tribune
photographer snapped this photo, which appeared on the front page of
the paper’s Sports section that Sunday. Seeing this unfold, a woman named Lola Proulx (who I am friends with to this day), bought 8 hot dogs and earned Oreo’s
trust by feeding him. She was able to get him to the Humane Society,
and they traced his tags back to our former home, where I had already
called with my new contact information. I went to pick Oreo up the
following Monday, 60 miles south of where he first started his journey.
From that day forward he was scared to death of trains, which led me to
believe he had a very close call with a train on his journey south. He
went on to live 9 more wonderful years, and even survived an
assassination attempt by a local campus keystone cop, and a close call
with a herd of massive elk. He appeared on the second season of
Friends, and made other front page headlines throughout his 12 year
storied life. He traveled with me through 30 of the 50 states, and was a friend to everyone who met him!  All of these are stories for another entry though.  I’ll write one soon.  My cousin Lisa even named her dog after Oreo!

Speaking of Lisa, take a look at this outfit she bought Tommy & Andy for Halloween!  Sadly, they didn’t like it, so she returned it.  I still don’t have a costume for next week.  Any ideas??

I went to their house for dinner tonight.  They had the yard all decorated for Halloween!

    Boo!

  • Don Gato & Maggots

I’m dogsitting for Buster & Roxy this week, so today Lisa surprised me by bringing Andy over for lunch.  (He’s feeling much better by the way, thanks to everyone who asked!)

What a difference two weeks can make!! Lisa took both of these photos.

I’ve been trying to lose some weight by not eating after 8:00 PM on weeknights for the past 3 weeks.  It’s been going pretty well.  However, when I got here last night I walked in the kitchen and found this:

I have to go to the hardware store to get a padlock for this cupboard now!

Then Jennifer called me tonight and asked me to meet her and Tressa & Lisa S. for Taco Tuesday at Tortilla Flats.  It was a gorgeous night on the lake and a good time was had by all.  On a side note, Lisa’s husband Gary is getting out of the hospital today after 8 weeks and a horrible ordeal that included maggots and lots of chemotherapy.  (Did you know they still use maggots in hospitals for wound care?  I saw the pictures tonight and it was amazingly disgusting, but it really works!)  Keep him and their entire family in your thoughts.

Jennifer, trying not to look jealous of my iPod Touch.

I used to sing this song in 2nd grade.  In fact, my Dad has reel to reel tapes of me singing this in 1972.  Here’s the modern, overly dramatic version that I sang for Tressa.  I didn’t realize until the end that the table next to us had joined in on the action.  LOL.

  • “You Can Laugh Mom”

Lisa sent this picture to my phone today.  Poor little Andy is on a nebulizer because he has a terrible cough and is having trouble breathing. Tonight, when she put him to bed she said, “What can Momma do to make you feel better honey?”.  He simply replied, “You can laugh Mom…”

    Poor little angel…get well soon!

    RANDOM PHOTO OF THE DAY

Saw these two dogs in the yogurt shop in Encino last night.  They were completely unrelated, but both so cute!

FYI, we just bought tickets to the Vienna Teng concert on Tuesday, September 30th at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood.  If any of you local Xangans are interested in going, it should be a good show!  Check out her music!

  • How Do You Measure 43 Years In A Life?

…In daylights, in sunsets in midnights, in cups of coffee. In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.
In 22,600,800 minutes…how do you measure 43 years of life?  How about love?

Thanks to everyone who sent me birthday wishes this weekend.  I kind of know what Albert & David mean now about Facebook, but it’s still nice that people take the time to actually send me birthday greetings!

My Aunt & Uncle and cousins had a party for me today in Orange County.  I had a great time and got lots of swag, LOL.

This is what happens when Cody doesn’t listen to his favorite cousin!!

Actually, he had a very bad
skateboarding accident Wednesday and broke his collar bone.  It was
really nice of him to show up for my party.  He was in a lot of pain.
Poor little guy.  I’m pretty sure he won’t be hanging on to the back of
a moped while skateboarding any more though!  I’m really glad he’s
    going to be OK.
This was after he got home from the hospitalSee how much higher his right shoulder is?

This card was hilarious.  It’s from the Republican side of the family!  On the front was Barack Obama saying, “Obviously you’ve had a lot of
experience with birthdays…”, and inside it said, “But who needs
    experience.”
