  • The Splendor of L.A.

I often write about my hometown, Chicago, being the most beautiful city in America. Over the years, I’ve lived in or spent a great deal of time in New York City, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Washington D.C., but I’ve always considered Chicago home. When I moved to Los Angeles 9 years ago, I never expected to like it as much as I do. L.A. isn’t exactly known for its beauty. It is urban sprawl defined and I could never live here if I had to drive every day. But if you take the time to explore, there’s a lot of hidden beauty in the City of Angels. With sweeping mountain vistas and lush beaches, it’s hard to compete with such natural beauty. Couple that with world class cultural venues and the glamor of Tinseltown; and Southern California really shines. I might even say it has become “homey”. Here’s some recent proof. All photos by me, for use under a Creative Commons license:

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s “Urban Light” exhibit is one of my favorite places to take photographs in L.A. It’s even better with a spectacular sunset, like this one last month.

Nestled in the heart of a dead end lot in one of the most notorious neighborhoods of Los Angeles, lie the Watts Towers; a 34 year labor of love by an eccentric artist named Simon Rodia. Reminiscent of Gaudi’s, Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or Niki de Saint Phalle’s, Il Giardino Dei Tarocchi in Italy; these towering structures made of discarded glass and steel are a must see treasure off the beaten path. I’ve been meaning to visit here since I moved to L.A., and finally made the trek a few weeks ago. Truly a site to behold.

My friends tease me for the sheer amount of sunset  and cloud photos I take…but like snowflakes, they’re never the same. Here’s one example from Venice Beach.

You might expect to find a lighthouse like this in coastal Maine or maybe the Pacific Northwest; but the Point Vicente Lighthouse in Palos Verdes is truly a hidden gem along the Southern California coastline. It’s the perfect place for a first date at sunset!

L.A. isn’t know for its skyline…save for buildings being blown up in Hollywood action movies. But when the light is right, the city sparkles!

The Grove is more than just home to Mario Lopez’s “Extra” or a place to star watch, it’s also quite beautiful at dusk on an early spring night.

The famous intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. is home to the Oscars as well as superheroes and Marilyn Monroe’s footprints, among others!

The Walt Disney Concert Hall is one of Frank Gehry’s masterpieces. It has spawned a renaissance of downtown Los Angeles that has been helped by L.A. Live and the Nokia Theater.

Though not technically in Los Angeles, Disneyland will forever be associated with La La land!

Who ever said there’s no nature in the big city? This hummingbird is guarding her nest on my cousin’s front porch last week.

I couldn’t leave Chazz & Rio out of a photoblog dedicated to the beauty of Southern California. Here they are walking the beach with Claudio yesterday.

Even something as simple as a dandelion can make someplace seem beautiful. This was shot on the grounds of the above mentioned Watts Towers.

  • T’was The Day of the Oscars…

    Apologies to Clement C. Moore:
(For this year’s poem, as well as last year’s, the year before and the year before that!)

‘Twas the day of the Oscars,
    And all through H-wood.
    Celebrities were fasting,
    Making sure they’d look good.

    The statues were polished,
    All shiny and gold.
    Hoping Natalie or Christian,
    On Sunday would hold
    .

    With their crash diets over,
    The celebrities came.
    And fans whistled and shouted.
    And called them by name.

    There’s Marky Mark,
    Looking fresh from a fight.
    And there’s Annette Bening,
I hope “The Kids Are All Right”.

    Who’s that over there,
    With only one arm?
Oh just James Franco and Anne,
    No cause for alarm.

    And there’s Colin Firth,
    Just out of reach.
    Stuttering and stammering,
    Preparing his speech.

    So off to the Kodak,
    I went with my guests.
    We took lots of photos,
    And here are the best!

After a rare Oscar weekend rainstorm on Friday night, Saturday gave way to a clear but cool morning. This photo went viral on Tumblr

Though the forecast called for more rain, the sun peaked through the clouds and stayed with us all day! That wasn’t the case just over the Hollywood Hills though. In fact in Burbank they had 1/2 inch of snow, only 6 miles from Hollywood! That hasn’t happened since the 50′s!

Even Chanel was in her Oscar finest (channeling Bjork?) up on my roof!

After a delicious Filipino breakfast, our VIP Guests readied for a day in Hollywood!

We were granted insider access to all the pre-events!

This afternoon, this road will only be open to limousines!

Here’s a quartet of sunsets from the past 2 weeks. I’ve been out of town for work, and absent from Xanga all month (better to help my SP boycott). I have to leave again tomorrow at 4 AM, so no Oscar parties for me tonight. Hope everyone enjoys the Academy Awards!

  • Sorry for the Woody in my Pants Officer!

To explain how the week ended with me in the back of a police car, we have to back up to the beginning.  It was another busy week at The Hotel Careyfornia.  Mike was in town on yet another stop on his trip around the world.  Darlene came home from her summer in Michigan with fresh pasties.  I took Arielle to the pumpkin patch, which has become somewhat of a tradition.  The night before Halloween was spent at Griffith Park Observatory with Sam & Charlotte.  It was an unusually clear day in Los Angeles and as the sun set into the Pacific, Halloween was upon us.  As I wondered  how I could top my outfit 2 years ago, when Sarah Palin was running for vice president and I was a moose in a bulletproof vest; and last year, when I was Balloon Boy’s dad, taking pictures with all the cute Balloon Boys; it struck me.  This year I would take the conservative route, and dress as a nice, Midwestern, pedophile priest!  It was a lot of fun.  Surprisingly, no one was offended by my costume.  Even the (real) cops asked to take my picture.  The best costume of the night for me was the BP Oil Spill.  There were lots of Chilean miners and Snookies and of course standard Lady GaGa fare.  Let the fun begin:

I had never been in the back of a police car before…it was REALLY uncomfortable!

Bless me father for I have sinned!

No trick or treating, but there was plenty of eye candy…tricks and treats!

I got to hang out with a lot of other priests, nuns and popes…even  Jesus and the devil!

Even the kids graced Santa Monica Blvd with 150,000 other revelers.

The dogs got in on the act too!

Jad and I even had a Xanga meetup!

    Best of the rest…

  • A New Era Begins – The Color Purple & Fake Abs

I’m out of town on a business trip until March 2nd, but before I left this morning, my new camera was delivered!  My old Canon SD850 has been very very good to me.  It’s been through a lot and still takes great pics (as you can see below) but you may have noticed the big scratch on the lens these past few weeks.  I’ve tried to crop it out of most of the photos, but the camera was on its last leg.  This is my new camera:

Because of the sheer amount of photos I take, (I took over 450,000 with my SD850), I needed a lightweight, powerful pocket camera with a big screen and Canon’s vivid colors.  I chose the brand new Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS.  It’s got a touch screen for all of the controls and some neat features like a fisheye lens setting and a “wink or smile controlled” self timer.  I toll this photo by winking:

Me in my hotel room tonight…first picture with new camera…taken with a fisheye setting and a wink!

We had a great weekend.  Friday night we went to see The Color Purple starring Fantasia.  I wasn’t expecting to like her performance as much as I did, especially in light of all her bad press.  But I must say, she did a great job in the role of Celie.  All of the performances were strong in fact, and we really enjoyed the show.  The Color Purple has always been both Claudio’s and my favorite movie of all time, so I’m glad we got to see it together.

Saturday we took Chazz on a hike and it marked the first time I completed the whole loop of Runyon Canyon.  I was proud of myself, though Claudio & Chazz could run it 3 times over!  It was a gorgeous day:

Later,  we headed downtown to see an art exhibit by Ryan’s best friend, up and coming artist Keasha Mendez (of Tila Tequila fame), who showed off her remarkable art work against the stunning backdrop of downtown Los Angeles at sunset. If anyone is interested in purchasing one of these pieces, let me know, and I’ll get you in touch with Keasha.

One of her paintings is actually called “Claudio’s Abs”.  I wonder if she knew they were fake when she painted them?  It’s amazing what plastic surgeons can do these days!!

Well, the wi-fi connection in this hotel sucks, so I’m going to go read about how to use my new camera.  I may not be able to read your blogs for a while.  I’ll be pretty busy for the next week or so.  Have a good week everyone!

  • Road Rage and Roger Ebert

What follows, are two completely unrelated stories that are ultimately about hope and inspiration:

I would like everyone to grab a box of tissues and read this story.  I want you to think about it the next time you get angry while driving.  I know I will.  I’m an admittedly terrible driver, and have been guilty of road rage many times.  I’ve been working on driving more calmly for several years, but living in Los Angeles, relapses are easy.  I hope that the memory of what happened to this family and their little boy will forever stay with me when I’m behind the wheel. Life is indeed too short.

When a porn star and a college student driving through the San Fernando Valley fell into conflict, a Bangladeshi American family suffered the consequences

    Los Angeles magazine, February 2010

On the Internet you can watch a four-minute video clip of Ayman Arif dancing. The venue is a bedroom in his Northridge home; his stage, a comforter patterned with sunflowers. Taking his cues from a Bollywood spectacular playing on the television, the four-year-old Bangladeshi American boy wriggles, twirls, and bounds. On his bare chest he wears the pink string sash of the Brahman jester he is pretending to be. His mop of brown hair gives way to a wide forehead, and his dark brown eyes are bright with fire as he sings along to the Bengali-language soundtrack. One moment he’s wagging a stern finger, the next he’s clasping his hands to his heart or pumping an outstretched palm toward the heavens.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2007, some ten months after her son’s impromptu performance made it onto YouTube, Syeda Arif was readying her family for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr—three days of gift giving, party hopping, overeating, and prayer to conclude the fast of Ramadan. At 30, Syeda was petite, with almond-shaped eyes and a husky laugh. She and her husband, Amir, lived in a Bangladeshi enclave in the northwest San Fernando Valley. Her father had been twice nominated to the Bangladeshi parliament, and Amir liked to say that she made friends with the ease of a born politician.

Around noon in the gathering heat of the day, Syeda buckled her two-month-old daughter, Ikra, into the car seat in her Honda Civic and drove to the home of Romey Islam, one of her best friends. The Islams lived in a modest gray ranch house on Sherman Way near Van Nuys Airport. Its soundproof front windows looked out onto a six-lane river of crosstown traffic that, like the row of palm trees lining the sidewalk, continued as far as the eye could follow. Read more…

And keeping in the vain of “life’s too short”, here’s another article I highly recommend taking the time to read.  It’s an inspiring look at Roger Ebert, perhaps the best known film critic in America.  Those of you in other countries have probably never heard of him, but I’ve always had a special affinity for Mr. Ebert.  He was a fixture in Chicago where I grew up, and his movie reviews with Gene Siskel and patented “thumbs up or down” are legendary.  Five years ago, when the movie “Rent” came out, I was very excited.  Any regular reader of this space knows that seeing the musical “Rent” in 1996 was a seminal event in my life.  I went on to see the show 15 times in 15 different countries!  While I was a bit underwhelmed by the transition from stage to screen; subsequent viewings of the movie made me appreciate it more.  Upon realizing this, I wrote to Mr. Ebert to take issue with a few of the comments he made in his review of the film.  Imagine my surprise the next day, when I got a personal response from Roger Ebert from his personal email address; and he actually agreed with me!  I thought that was a very classy thing for him to do.  At the time, I had no idea of the huge medical ordeals he was facing.  I read this article last night and it brought tears to my eyes. Roger Ebert is a class act. This is the story of a life well lived and it’s worth your time.

It was a very busy weekend at The Hotel Careyfornia, filled with many of my blog’s namesakes, primarily dogs (4), kids (3), and sunsets (2).  Thankfully, there was little mention of Sarah Palin and her redneck teleprompter!  Friday, Seth and Hannah came by with Garbo & Ruby.  On Saturday, David & Rebecca came with the two girls and Chanel the dog (just like last Valentine’s Day, when I went to Gay Traffic School!).  Despite snow in 49 of the 50 United States, it was 75° (24° C) in L.A. and we hiked up to the “new” Hollywood sign.  It’s been covered by conservationists temporarily to prevent land development at one of the last untouched parts of Los Angeles. After a quick trip to Millions of Milkshakes, we headed to The Getty Center for sunset (it’s free after 5:00 on Saturdays!).   We capped the night off celebrating the Lunar New Year with delicious Thai food.  Sunday, Claudio, Ryan, Omar & Chazz came to dance the Valentine’s night away at Avalon.  Tonight, Tyson (who took time out of his busy TV appearance schedule), met me and Chazz for dinner at Hollywood & Highland.  I’m exhausted.  Is it the weekend yet??

To prove the clouds weren’t Photoshopped, here’s a short video of the last storm

I’ve been dog-sitting for Buster & Roxy all week.  I have them until Thursday, when I leave for the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.  The poor dogs had cabin fever this week with all the rain, but they got cured of that really quickly after seeing this riveting rescue of a dog trapped in the swollen Los Angeles River this week:

The dog’s owners still haven’t been found.  Maybe I should adopt him and get Chazz a playmate?’
This was really quite an amazing thing to watch.  The poor dog was so scared and the firefighter was so brave.

  • Dangerous, Delusional and Doltish

The recent revelations about Sarah Palin in the book “Game Change” have left me giddy and completely unbothered by her recent appointment as Fox News’ newest pinhead.  Let’s face it, even McCain’s own campaign had doubts that someone as vapid and crazy (“It was God’s plan…“) as Caribou Barbie should ever hold the highest office in the land and even hatched a plan to give her a mostly ceremonial role should they win.  So keep prattling on Sarah…and show us all how dangerous, delusional and doltish you really are!  To wit:

“John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin may have been a bold stroke that narrowed what would otherwise have been a blowout defeat. But it was also, as the authors depict it, an act of extreme recklessness, a seat-of-the-pants improvisation that allowed for almost no serious vetting of someone who knew diddly-squat about the world we live in and who would have been a heartbeat from the presidency.

“In the days leading up to an interview with ABC News’ Charlie Gibson, aides were worried with Ms. Palin’s grasp of facts. She couldn’t explain why North and South Korea were separate nations and she did not know what the Federal Reserve did. She also said she believed Saddam Hussein attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.”

Where’d they find her? Well, on the Internet, as it happens. “McCain’s campaign manager, Rick Davis, spotted Sarah Palin while searching the Internet for possible female vice presidential candidates.” More from CBS News:

“Her foreign policy tutors are literally taking her through, ‘This is World War I, this is World War II, this is the Korean War. This is the how the Cold War worked.’ Steve Schmidt had gone to them and said, ‘She knows nothing,’” Heilemann told Cooper. “A week later, after the convention was over, she still didn’t really understand why there was a North Korea and a South Korea. She was still regularly saying that Saddam Hussein had been behind 9/11. And, literally, the next day her son was about to ship off to Iraq. And when they asked her who her son was going to fight, she couldn’t explain that.”"

“A debacle of historic and epic proportions”

Now, speaking of doltish, American Idol begins tonight, LOL.  As I did last year and the year before, I will continue to post photos when I see these new faux celebrities about town or attend tapings.  (They’re staying at a hotel close to me now, but aside from Todrick Hall and JB Ahfua (frontrunners for my money), I don’t have a lot of information yet.)  It should be interesting to see how Ellen works out, and since this is Simon’s last season, we’ll probably be talking about the X-Factor this time next year.  Say what you will about Idol but at its best, the show extols the American Dream.  At its worst, it brings out the schadenfruede in all of us.

Each year I think it might be the end of the show’s popularity, and each year brings a new  Sanjaya, Danny Noriega, Jason Castro or Adam Lambert.  Anyway, I’m sure I’ll be attending a show or two this year, and will run in to these wannabe celebrities all over town.  So stay tuned if you’re so inclined.  Hit it Ryan:

Finally, a week of spectacular weather and sunsets, was capped off at the Getty Museum over the weekend, where Ryan, Lorenzo, Adam and I enjoyed a sunset for the ages after coming out of the Rembrandt exhibit.  Take a look at the photos and video:

  • All GLY Things Must Come to an End

Sabine (a founding member of the GLY Gang), left for Germany today by way of Boston (to visit Youenn).  It  was so nice having her here these last two weeks.  I miss her already.  (She just called to tell me that she saw Lauren Bacall in the airport after I dropped her off; who was in LA over the weekend to receive an honorary Oscar.  It was Bine’s first star sighting this trip and a fitting end to two weeks in LaLa Land!)  The past couple of   days have been jam packed with fun.  On Monday, we went to see the movie “Precious“.  Though I thought most of the performances were quite good; the movie left me rather disturbed.  Sadly, I fear that the situations portrayed in the film are not all that uncommon.  It’s worth seeing, but it’s definitely not the feel good movie of the year!  Last night we went to The Jay Leno Show.  Tyra Banks was supposed to be there, but she got stuck in NYC, so Kevin Nealon was the guest.  Bine and I got separated while  being seated, but I managed to smuggle my camera in and take a couple of shots before a mean security guard confiscated it.  He told me I had to delete the pictures, but I had already removed the memory card and discreetly slipped it in my pocket.  I told him the camera was “out of film”.  He pondered that for a minute while looking at the camera and realized I was fucking with him.  LOL.  Then I told him I was just using the camera for the telephoto lens!  I’m sure he didn’t buy that story, but there was no way I was giving him my memory card!  He finally got tired of arguing with me and walked away defeated.  During the commercial break, Sabine got to sing with Jay’s band.  The problem was, she didn’t know the words to Stevie Wonder’s, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered“!  After the show, we headed to the Los Angeles Film School for a special free screening of the movie “In The Loop“.  It was fantastic!!  The best way to describe it would be “as if Jane Austen and Monty Python collaborated on an episode of “The West Wing”.  It’s probably the funniest movie I saw all year.  Afterward, we sat in on a panel with the director and some of the cast.  What a great night!

Sad to leave The Hotel Careyfornia, but she’ll be back next May!

Update:  Thanks to all of you who wrote me about the Chocolate Lab, “D”, who we found over the weekend, and became Chazz’s best friend.
The owner replied to the Craigslist ad, and I got these texts from Claudio & Ryan last night:

Even though, Chazz was sad to see her go, I’m glad the owner got her dog back. I can’t imagine losing a dog!  It turns out she was 2 years old and hadn’t been spayed.  I wonder if she’ll have puppies now??

    Greetings, amigos!

Today, September 2nd, is Claudio’s birthday, as I am sure many of you know.  I wanted to get more ideas about his new professorial life and, bingo, found some delightful quotes at RatemyProfessor.com.  Here are some highlights, in my view…

“He is very knowledgeable in the subject matter, and even if he is sometimes slightly unclear with his initial explanations,…”

“His accent can be amusing at times, but in a good way. He is perfectly comprehensible.”

“Dr. P. is a world class professor.”

“One of the best professor [sic] I have ever taken in my life.” (lovely insinuating were it not for the obvious sign of poor grammar…my favorite quote in the group)

“This man is helpful, knowledgable [sic] and is willing to help you in whatever way possible.” (Do tell, Dr. World Class!)

“He really knows what he is talking about,…” (Ha!  This one had me rolling on the ground)

Happy birthday to you, old friend!

I am looking forward to seeing you all in a few days!  Luisao, any chance you can plan a last minute trip to SoCal this weekend?!  Claudao, nao se preocupe que vamos falar mal de voce esse final de semana, com aquele carinho de sempre.

    Abracos,
    m

Many of you don’t remember that back in the early 90′s, before the Internet or ratemyprofessor.com, I used to collect Claudio’s evaluations from when he was a T.A at University of Illinois, because he spent summers in Brazil.  My all time favorite went something like this:
Q:  Did you learn a lot in Professor P’s class?
A:  I didn’t learn a thing.  I was too busy looking at his dreamy eyes!
15 years later, the eyes are more cloudy than dreamy and we won’t talk about the hair…
    Feliz Anniversario my friend!!

    Claudio & Oreo circa 1990

It’s amazing what 20 years can do!

I was looking through my old diaries last night, and found this and sent it to Claudio.  He wrote this in my calendar in 1991:  “Birthday of the nicest Brazilian ever”.  I’m sure Marcelo might have something to say about that my dear!

Ugh!  You want to talk about hair!!??  Be careful darling.  It may be YOUR birthday, but my old calendars hold lots of other secrets as well.  Feliz Anniversario

The weather finally broke today.  It was a little cooler with a touch of humidity in the air.  We needed a break!  Saturday it was 105° F (41° C) when Lisa & the kids and I took Aunty Lulu & Uncle George out for ice cream:

The fires did make for amazing sunsets all last week:

Whenever I need to smile I’ll just look at this picture of Buster!

Joel and I went to see District 9 over the weekend and we both enjoyed the movie.  It was about 1/2 hour too long, but entertaining.  Kind of a cross between Close Encounters and The Fly!  There were a lot of blatant racial parallels that I won’t go into now.  As someone who has been to Johannesburg though, it was a sadly appropriate setting for that movie.

I’m SO excited for this show to start next week!!

Dinner last night before I headed back to LA for the first time in 9 days.

Click for best of the rest…

The fires are far enough away that my home isn’t in any danger, but they’re still too close for comfort:

On the way home last night this is what I saw from the car.  I’m surprised there weren’t more accidents on the freeway from people looking.  It was an amazing sight to see:

The air today was an eerie, quiet yellow making the sky look like Dijon mustard.  About 6:00 tonight I went up to my roof and shot this photo.

After taking this, I went back inside with my mask!

Here’s a good time lapse video of the fire.  The smoke clouds are amazing as these LA Times photos show:

And finally, I got some very sad news today from Margie:

    Subject: Daisy

I had to have Daisy put down today.  I am very sad.  She fell off the bed & broke whatever was misplaced in her back.  When I picked her up she immediately lost her bowels & her head started rolling to the side.  When I took her outside she tried to stand but could not.  Later I will pick her up – couldn’t bear to be with her when they put her down – and bury her on the farm.  Can’t stop crying every time I think about it, so I’m going to try not to think about it.

Daisy, if you remember, spent a month here with me last spring.  In fact I recently posted this video of her getting harassed by Chazz.  I know how terribly painful it is to lose a treasured friend.  We’ll miss you lazy Daisy!!

I’ve got a bunch of good friends flying in for the weekend starting Thursday.  It’s going to be non stop.  We’re going to the Hollywood Bowl for my 44th birthday Sunday.  I’ll try to post as I have time.  Have a good week everyone!

  • Bad Luck With Produce

Update:  the plumbing is done.  Click here for Hell’s Kitchen.

I had a bunch of meetings in Orange County this morning, and I was running late.  I didn’t get out of the house until 10 AM, hoping against all odds I could drive 60 miles in 60 minutes (a ridiculous goal in Los Angeles on the best of days).  Sure enough there was a major accident down by Disneyland.  The highway was covered in peaches and grapes.  A produce truck had crashed with a car.  It was a nasty accident, and I was stuck in traffic for an extra hour.

After a long day of meetings I hoped to turn the day’s tide by heading to Aunty LuLu & Uncle Georgie’s house for spaghetti.  They’ve been in Michigan since I left for Italy, and they just got home.  I’ve been missing that Thursday spaghetti for 2 months now!  Dar joined us for dessert, and I began the long drive home at 9:30 tonight.  As I walked up the stairs in the hallway outside my condo, I realized that the carpet outside of my unit was squishing.  Never a good sign!  As I walked in the beautiful lobby of the Hotel Careyfornia and headed towards the kitchen, this is what I saw:

I’m not sure if you can see from the photos, but the hardwood floors were soaked.  I don’t know if it came from an upstairs neighbor or what.  It sucks!  The water is filled with shredded lettuce and who knows what else.  I’ve not had good luck with produce today.  Needless to say, it’s now 2:30 AM and I’m waiting for a call back from a 24 hour plumber.  This isn’t great timing, as I’m leaving Saturday for a week.  When it rains it pours.

One bright note…Andy finally lost his toenail!  And guess who visited him?  LOL.  I got this text from Lisa the other night:

I told her whatever he gets, I should get half…for inventing the Toe Fairy!
